Lostinmirkwood Backpacking through Central América.
I thought on a trip like this, that the goal is discovery of self through solitude. I realize now that it is a struggle for companionship, a discovery of roots of language and customs (including border crossings) and the surmountable barrier between. It is not a bond of fellow travelers but more of a symbiotic relationship of cohabitation.

B is a new travler I've been hanging with, he just finished working in the Peace Corp for 2 years in the Oso Pennesila in C.R. He and I travled to Masaya market to buy some art work. I found a stunning painting of a Nica girl gripping onto Barbed wire with the Volcano in the background, I felt the artist wanted to depict entrapment and limited exhistance lack of freedom to move forward and too far from the native rural past to turn back, I felt a strong sence of dispair in her eyes....bla bla juxaposition...bla bla. The Artist

Yestrday I ventured out with Brian to see the Precolumbian exhibit of statues found in the Isletas de Granada. An outstanding exhibit, the granite statues are housed in an old (1529) Convent, built by franciscian monks. Destroyed partially by Henry Morgan and and burnt almost to the ground by William Walker hundreds of years later. Upon entring it is sugested to rince one's hands in a water and rose bud basin. I wanted to take spanish classes, actually I still do but the one's I visited were either too gritty or far too expensive. randomly I ran accross a copy of Dostoyevsky's Las Noches Blancas (WHITE NIGHTS) so I bought it and I intend to read it in spanish to work on my language skills. I'll keep you updated. I thought the Short story may be appropiate, being a 4 day long love story here today gone tomorrow. It was a lovely night, one of those nights, dear reader, which can only happen when you are young..." [View Full Entry]

Spent the rest of the afternoon, after the blog' crazyness swinging in a hammock with the winter of our discontent and a few cold victorias. I watched part of anchorman while I ate my burrito, which brings me to a issue. I´m finding it anoying staying at the monkey for only one reason. after 4 meals here in nicaragua, I have eaten here 4 times since the food is so good, wonderfully cheap and filling and danm convinent. I recomend the tacos burritos, quesidillias and burgers. oh I just stumbled accross a quote that I had in my last travel journal. [View Full Entry]

With very few clean clothes left D and I decided to wash our clothes by hand to save a few dollars I happened to snag a photo of the excitement. You may notice that my hair is missing. The pre'mullet was growing in so I walked through Granada and sat down in the kill box as it were. luckily a beautiful and friendly nica stopped the crazed barber from giving me the true buzz cut after my pleas of just a little off the top ;) [View Full Entry]

The Washboard

Granada is a beautiful city. Guide books qualification as a colonial marvel really is an understatement. These impeccably clean streets are a delight to walk and views of almost ancient buildings and churches as well as active city street folk make the journey vibrantly colorful. As I walked this morning I saw a few things including the cathedral and the central park I had seen them last night but without my camera. Here are a few shots of the city life, horse drawn taxies women selling flowers and fruit as well as the central fountain juxtaposed (did you like that Wezie?) [View Full Entry]
