You may need to prepare yourself for this one. Seriously, sit down, feet up, (I would say tea, but it's not even worth it, it'll either be spat all over the floor or cold by the time you finish reading. So, forget the tea). Are you ready? I said the last chapter in my life is where things started to spiral out of control, well, things continued to spiral to a point where I feel that backpacking got the better of me, and I've been doing things that are far from anything I'd be doing at home. But, in a good way, I guess. Crazy things can happen if you're open to take life's opportunities. You see things get worse, and then they get better, depending on which way you look at it. Back in Melbourne, ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Airlie Beach November 6th 2012

We arrived in Airlie and went straight to the same hostel as before, Beaches (mainly because they have a $6.50 meal deal that is to die for; Steak and chips + a beer or wine). We were given the luxury room. Now I know what you're all thinking, 'there's no such thing as a luxury hostel', but for a backpacker, this room was to drool over; Two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a big shower, a couch, a fridge, and a television, (although the tv didn't actually work, it was more for show, but we didn't tell people that. By the end, I actually thought it quite rude of them to put a broken tv in our room, it was just teasing us). Anyway, all of this for just $20 a night. We were living like kings, and ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Airlie Beach November 6th 2012

We checked into Beaches hostel in Airlie Beach and was put into a room with a weird Swedish couple that whispered when they spoke (when they spoke, as in, hardly ever), and two guys from Finland. Lene and I wanted to celebrate our spontaneous move to Airlie so bought a box of goon. (For those of you who aren't aware, 'goon' is a cheap, low quality wine made from waste, literally. Ingredients include: fish eggs and milk and is designed to get you smashed on a low budget. Oh, and it tastes like cat's piss). Nonetheless, we drank on the beach, with the two Finnish guys tagging along (but not drinking as they were driving to Brisbane the following day). So drank, and got drunk. We decided we wanted to go swimming, but the sea smelt ... read more

We departed for Bowen early with the premier bus, arriving late in the evening. Us, being the Messy Crew, hadn't made any plans, just hoping there would be hostels and possible farm work available. We were wrong. We sat for about an hour in the bus station calling all the hostels in the small town but they were all full. We had chosen Bowen's busiest and apparently most exciting weekend; The Fishing Festival. We took a trip to the local store and purchased two tents and then walked to the nearest campsite which was on the harbor, full of fishing maniacs. We decided to move to a destination nearer to the beach so we hopped on the local bus, and really, it was the locals bus. Everyone knew everyone. Margaret was getting a lift home, literally, ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns » Cairns City November 6th 2012

The first thing that came to my mind upon arrival in Cairns was, 'now what'. I walked to the nearest taxi and asked him to take me to a hostel of his choice. We pulled up outside 'Calypso Inn', a 10 minute walk from the center of town. As soon as I arrived I asked for work for free accommodation in order to save a bit of money. Now, I know what you're thinking, trying desperately to save money as soon as you arrive in a country is not a very good start to a holiday, and you're right, I hadn't saved up that much money at all. You see the plan (if you can call it that) was to stay for a week in Cairns and then look for farm work for three months to ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne » CBD November 1st 2012

A month and a half ago I set out on a journey of a lifetime. A spur of the moment, jump in the deep end sort of journey, totally unplanned with really not much thought going into it. Originally I had my place confirmed at Southampton University to study English Literature and History, something I felt I was doing for the sake of doing it. My summer 2012 was the most enjoyable of my life, having traveled to Greece with school friends, Spain to the Pamplona Bull festival (and no, I did not run and will never run), then Italy with the family, followed by a flight back to Greece for a bit of Island hopping, alone, and finally Berlin, just to travel some more. All this traveling was very unplanned which is what made it ... read more
