After spending the afternoon dedicated to my computer now that I have a better internet connection, it was off to meet with our Italian host for a quick birthday celebration for the office's secretary before dinner. We met in the Piazza Campo de Fiori, by the statue of the philosopher Giordano Bruno. Our host showed us the beautiful building that houses the French embassy (leave it to the French to get one of the most beautiful buildings in Rome for themselves, he said), and then we were off to meet up with everyone from the office and the friends of Maria, who was celebrating her birthday. The piazza appeared to be quite busy to my eyes, but we were assured that since it was Monday night, it was very quiet. On Fridays and Saturdays, it is ... read more

A Taste of Rome (and some nasty blisters)

This morning dawned rather early for me after staying up late to finish my blogs. Fortunately, our host was running a little bit late, and his email was a sign to sleep thirty extra minutes. The first order of business for the day was to have breakfast and meet with our hotel liaison. The breakfast is held on the second floor, and we ate outside in a small courtyard, which was extremely inviting. I've noticed that I drink more coffee in Europe - it's so ingrained in the culture, that not to is almost an insult. So even though I have mostly given it up at home, I began the day with a cappuccino, and have already had an espresso as well! Following a quick breakfast, we toured around the conference rooms at the hotel and ... read more

After spending what felt like all day traveling, and almost injuring our taxi driver with my heavy suitcase (I told him it was shoes - it's really books, but probably in Rome, a suitcase full of shoes is more acceptable), we arrived in Rome, or Roma as the locals say. I already want to say things like "Roma" and "arrivederci" and "grazi" while rolling my r's and adding extra emphasis. As we drove in, I was feeling a little blah about the whole thing. I mean, I was Excited with a capital E to get to Rome finally, but as we were driving, it wasn't striking me as particularly cool. But that feeling left as soon as we saw the Colosseum - all I could say was "wow." It was incredible to be driving along, and ... read more

This morning, I was exhausted, but I managed to get up at seven and see the sunrise. The humidity created a mist that the hot sun burned through as it rose, and it created a beautiful and peaceful start to the day. Then it was off to meetings - we had two speakers this morning, followed by our break-out sessions, one of which I was leading. All went well, except for a couple of the lawyers who were giving me a hard time about not doing things that we are in fact doing. Fabulous. So anyway, after that, it was off to yet another meal - a few people skipped the lunch today because we've all been eating so much, and everyone feels that we just about finish eating when we're off to another meal! Today's ... read more

The title of my blog might sound boring - "another" evening on the Bosphorus. But I must admit, I'm not tiring of this beautiful strait yet. We learned today that it has competing currents, with the top of the strait running North to South, and the bottom running South to North. Yet, even though this makes the Bosphorus always active, it's very peaceful to look out over it in the evening. At the end of the night, I went out onto my little balcony and curled up in a chair to read, and it was pretty amazing to think that here I am, in Istanbul's best hotel and I'm reading a book while overlooking the Bosphorus. In the background, I could see the changing lights of the Bosphorus bridge, and still see the headlights glowing in ... read more

Well, it’s been a heck of a day so far! We started our first full day as always, with a business session. Although I refrained from doing an interpretive dance as I’ve often threatened, my presentation went well. The whole morning ran smoothly and we ended right on time. Too bad that was the most relaxed we’d be all day! As we gathered to get on the buses to head to lunch at twelve thirty, we realized that none of the companions were with us. Apparently, they had yet to return from their tour (from which they were supposed to be back at the hotel by noon at the latest). We eventually sent one bus on while I waited with the second bus for the companions. They arrived, but wanted to freshen up for the afternoon ... read more

Following a delightful day on Wednesday, I was happy to get a little chance to sleep in today before heading to breakfast. A buffet is served in two restaurants at the hotel, and we ate our meal outside, enjoying the sun glittering on the Bosphorus and the birds hopping on tables to sample the creamer. The Directors' Meeting began at noon and was held at the offices of our local law firm - the traffic in Istanbul is horrendous and makes driving in New Jersey look relaxing by comparison. It took us about thirty minutes to get to the firm's offices, which are located in an older part of Istanbul. Our hosts told us that the street they are on used to be the commercial center of the Ottoman Empire, so it was neat to be ... read more

It's Istanbul, not Constantinople

There are some cities in the world that seem to hold an air of mystery about them, a secret attraction that brings visitors inside and moves into their veins. It's an attraction that you can't really express or define, but it's immediate and visceral. It happens in cities like Bangkok, where you might find yourself having breakfast along the Chao Phraya river and feel totally at peace, or in Paris, where you can be having a coffee at a little cafe on the Champs Elysees and feel as though you've really arrived. You can also find it in Istanbul, where it crept under my skin as we drove to the hotel from the airport, and my whole body said, "Yes. Adventures can happen here." However, I wasn't totally sure I was even going to get here ... read more

Wiped out by our afternoon of mostly browsing, we were ready for some serious relaxation when we made it back to the Sagamore - time to hit the hot tub! Now that I had my new bathing suit, I was set to go. But first stop, Mr. Brown's Pub for a snack and an attempt to drive out Jess' cold with a gin and tonic. Since we were always big fans of our campus pub when we were in college, it was only natural that we would be drawn to Mr. Brown's pub. We found our seats at the bar and ordered up a big plate of cheese fondue with pita chips - combined with an official Saranac root beer, this made for the perfect afternoon snack. We chatted with the bartender, planned some serious relaxation ... read more

When you get four ladies together who don't often get to see that much of each other, you can guess as to what one thing will be happening - lots and lots of chatting. Catching up kept us up late on Friday night, so after we put a sniffling Jess to bed in the living room and climbed into our own beds, it was after midnight. Curled up at the edge of the bed so as not to bump into Dana and varying room temperatures meant I didn't get too much sleep, so it was ten the next morning before we ventured out of bed - my typing at the computer was the impetus for getting the morning started. We started slow, watching a good couple of hours of Sell this House! on A&E before showering ... read more
