Wiped out by our afternoon of mostly browsing, we were ready for some serious relaxation when we made it back to the Sagamore - time to hit the hot tub! Now that I had my new bathing suit, I was set to go. But first stop, Mr. Brown's Pub for a snack and an attempt to drive out Jess' cold with a gin and tonic. Since we were always big fans of our campus pub when we were in college, it was only natural that we would be drawn to Mr. Brown's pub. We found our seats at the bar and ordered up a big plate of cheese fondue with pita chips - combined with an official Saranac root beer, this made for the perfect afternoon snack. We chatted with the bartender, planned some serious relaxation in the hot tub, and even made friends with another woman seeking to rid herself of a cold with some alcohol. The only drawback to the atmosphere was a group of rowdy adults at the table behind us who refused to pay attention to the little girl at their table. She proceeded to scream and cry on several occasions, which did break up some of
the jovial atmosphere. But we soon put her behind us and headed to the pool.
We thought the lifeguards were trying to put one over on us when they refused to let anyone into the hot tub, but unfortunately they were serious. It turned out that there was some problem with the chlorine level in it, which required some extensive chemical testing by our industrious lifeguard and eventually, a call to the engineer. We endeavored to wait until 7 when the lifeguard assured us it would re-open, until they changed the sign at about a quarter to seven to say nine pm opening. Dejected, Sage and I hopped into the pool and proceeded to follow Jess' instructions for our water aerobics. We played around in the water, managed to get scolded for standing on the lane rope and eventually shriveled up enough that we were ready to head back to the room. We were disappointed to miss out on the hot tub experience, especially since our hard beds had caused me to want to loosen up my muscles in the warm water. Ah well, another time!
As we readied ourselves to return to our room, we passed by
Mr. Brown's pub again as a group of older ladies were leaving. We peeked in and realized that the especially loud blonde woman from before was still sitting in there, a full three hours since we had left! Someone commented on this, and the other group of ladies overheard us and knew exactly who we were talking about! They were also indignant that she was ignoring her daughter, and felt vindicated that a group of "young people" (us) would agree with them - they weren't too old if we were also bothered by the group's noise! Too funny...
After another round of showering, we were ready to head back to Mr. Brown's Pub. We had peeked at the menu and decided that we would rather eat there for dinner than head into Bolton Landing again. Besides, we had heard there would be live music that night. We settled into our table and started with a basket of biscuits (delicious), followed by caesar salad for Jess and I, a wedge with blue cheese for Sage, and the chowder for Dana. My main course was penne a la vodka (my staple food, and what I eat at almost every restaurant I
The Lone Bull
Taken by Sage go to) - it had a pesto sauce added to it, and wasn't as creamy as I would have liked, but it filled me up. Towards the end of our meal, one of the weddings upstairs let out and the pub became crowded with party-goers looking to continue their fun and enjoy the upcoming music. They were followed by a group of bachelorette party-ers who made the loud group from earlier in the afternoon look like librarians in comparison. Older than us by at least five to seven years, they were dressed as unflatteringly as possible and festooned with tiny shiny feather boas and candy necklaces. Luckily, they were certainly entertaining!
While they were busy chatting about a number of subjects loudly enough that we could almost participate in the conversation, the guitarist/singer arrived and began playing. He was really good, and we enjoyed singing along to his songs, which included American Pie by Don Maclean, Desperado by the Eagles, and some other classics. The best part about American Pie was that everyone in the pub knew the words, and whether they knew it or not, it seemed everyone was singing at some point during the song - one
man who came in towards the end just joined in as he walked across the room! It was a lot of fun.
The bachelorette party-ers broke out a list of things that the bride had to do, starting with getting a group of men to sing "You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling" to her. She asked the singer for help, and he obliged while her friends dragged five poor men from the crowd up in front of everyone to sing. It was pretty funny, and definitely entertaining, and they were fairly good! The singer also got the manager of the pub to come up and sing "Free Falling" - he told us that he needed all the practice he could get, since he'd be trying out for American Idol! He was pretty good, although admitted that his voice was tired from the night before, so hopefully we'll see him with Paula, Randy and Simon someday!
Eventually we were ready to head back to our lodge and break out the Friends DVD Scene It game - we split up into teams, and Jess and I managed to beat Sage and Dana twice, although it was close both times. We got
to bed well after twelve again and planned for a nine thirty wake up to make it out before the 11am check out.
The next morning dawned early, but we managed to get up and out pretty quickly. We thought we'd explore outside of Bolton Landing for breakfast and ended up discovering The Lone Bull in Lake George. Their sign outside said that with the big breakfast, they dared us to leave hungry - we would see about that!
We quite enjoyed the little knickknacks and kitschy stuff for sale as we walked in and were seated - Sage noticed that they had real maple syrup for sale, but questioned whether they actually served it with their food - turns out that they didn't! I ordered the cinnamon raison French toast with bacon, a hot chocolate and a Pepsi. Sage followed suit with the cinnamon raison, while Jess crafted her own breakfast of eggs, hash browns and bacon. Dana tried the 2x4, a promise of two eggs (scrambled) and four pancakes - she expected it to be a lot, but it exceeded everyone's expectations. Clearly more than two eggs were scrambled and delivered, and combined with four eggs,
it was overwhelming! She barely made a dent in it. None of us finished our food, and we were all stuffed - but full is a good way to hit the road.
I observed when we reached the parking lot that we've said goodbye in diner parking lots on a number of occasions - we might need to find a new departure point! But now that we've explored Lake George, we're on to explore other areas - maybe a ski trip to Lake Placid (I'll need an instructor for that one!), or maybe a trip up to Montreal (I can parlez francais). So I'll be adding more adventures to my work-related ones and I can't wait.
