May 18th. On Tuesday, we head for Denver to visit with Leigh's cousin Ruth. Since she is the historian of the Mueller clan, we plan to talk a bit about the Mueller family which settled in Iowa in the 1840's. We have a great time talking with Ruth and her daughter Brenda and spend much time poring over her genealogy albums. I get a much better sense of all the Mueller ancestors and their histories. Later in our trip, we plan to visit Walnut, Iowa where many of the Muellers settled and built homes. May 19th. Wednesday afternoon we head down to Colorado Springs to meet Jack Thomas and his wife Margo. Both Jack and I have been researching ancestors on the Thomas side of the family and have been corresponding via email after we "met" ... read more

May 18th. We break camp along the Yampa River early in the morning. Today we plan to travel toward the grasslands of northeastern Colorado before heading to Denver, where Leigh's cousin Ruth lives. We travel east, passing through Steamboat Springs, a ski resort area, where once again we encounter snow. We soon see high plain vistas and cattle ranches. We stop for the night in Fort Collins. With no camping spots available, we stay at a modest motel. The next morning we continue on through what is called short-grass prairie. Fairly bleak countryside with towns few and far between, dotted with the occasional forlorn windmill.... read more

May 17th. This morning we head east into Colorado. We pass through Dinosaur, the location of the Dinosaur National Monument headquarters, where the large dinosaur excavations can usually be seen. The center is closed, but we drive further east and decide to take the 35-mile Dinosaur Scenic Drive to Harper's Corner. The views are so spectacular, we take most of the day enjoying the drive and vista points. Late in the afternoon, we head for Yampa River State Park where, at last, we pitch our tent.... read more

May 13th. We start our trip in earnest as we travel east over the snow-capped Sierras on Highway 50. Nevada is greener than we can ever remember seeing it, due, no doubt to the long rainy season this year. We see several birds, such as ibis and snowy egrets at Stillwater Refuge where we have detoured for a lunch stop. Dramatic clouds surround us as we drive through Nevada and Utah. When we reach Wendover on the Nevada/Utah Border, we head north to experience the salt flats of the Great Salt Lake, which are, as expected, an endless flat expanse. But even here the rains have created some small ponds and marshes. May 14th. As we approach Salt Lake City, we head for Antelope Island State Park to try our first night of car camping. It ... read more

May 15th. This morning the storm clouds have passed through and the sky is a reassuring blue. We take a short drive around town to see the notable sights such as the capitol building and Temple Square. We stop in at the LDS Family Research Center, which is a huge library containing genealogical data on more than 3 billion people. I try out their online search capabilities and am able to locate information on my great-grandmother, Laura Gertrude Vaughn, whose familly history was lost because she died very young. We could easily spend hours if not days on researching our relatives, but we decide to move on. Before we leave Salt Lake, we stop by the Apple store, where we find out that my trusty laptop battery will no longer charge because the computer's logic board ... read more

After packing every inch of our trusty Toyota, we finally head off on our trip. The weather is beautiful and traffic is light as we head down the coast and then turn inland across the San Joaquin Valley up into the Sierra Nevada mountain range. We reach Twain Harte in the Sierra foothills around 3pm and spend the night with Lance, Leigh's brother. The next morning we head north along Highway 49, the Gold Rush highway. We stop at Columbia State Park, which is a re-creation of a typical gold rush town, complete with saloons, stage coach and buildings of the gold rush era. We continue north through along many towns that have maintained historic districts of buildings and homes dating from the 1850's, all too often surrounded by the ugly sprawl of gas stations, fast ... read more

First we'd like to start off with where we live now for those who have never been to The Sea Ranch. The Sea Ranch is a community of about 2000 homes along the California coast about 2 and half hours north of San Francisco. The Sea Ranch is in a rural area of woods, coastal plains and rocky shoreline, about an hour and a half from busy city streets, shops and freeways. Sea Ranch is well-known for the architecture of its homes, which have a distinct style. It is also a popular tourist destination. There are over 40 miles of trails, swimming pools and tennis courts on the Ranch with about 400 home available for vacation rentals. I've added a few photos of the area to give you an idea of what it looks like.... read more

Hello to friends and family, On May 10th, Leigh and I are beginning a road trip across the Western United States to visit our relatives in the heartland of Kansas, Iowa and Minnesota. Along the way we plan to enjoy and photograph the "spacious skies and amber waves of grain and the purple mountains majesty above the fruited plain". For much of the trip we will be car camping. We've picked up a lot of camping equipment which we hope will all fit into our little Toyota. We plan to take lots of photos and upload our favorites on this blog. We hope you enjoy stories and pictures of our travels. We'd love hearing from you as we travel across the landscape.... read more
