Asia » Laos » West » Vientiane February 13th 2016

This is a place that's often left unrecommended by visitors, not many rave about it; books and people would say ah two days is enough. And we didn't expect to stay, it was a tactical point to open up more southern Laos for us, we were happy and exhausted leaving the stunning Nong Khiaw! And here, we actually stayed a week, it would be our last Laos stop. We found many gems, un-postcard worthy perhaps, but cherished artifacts for our memories. Maybe we like underdogs. Vientiane. What we found here - - Korean food! Oh my, so good. Three nights we'd go for a different Korean restaurant and were so treated with Bibimbap in stone bowl, spicy kimchi stew, the delightful little Banchan dishes which are topped up throughout, and the yummy black rice, the cabbage ... read more

I was really excited to go trek, my first proper one since travelling (which I guess was a surprising statistic in itself). I knew what to bring, that they'd be four others and that we'd be going (picture a wooden map with little wooden props) this way into the jungle, with lots of ups and downs, a village visit here and a camp about here (quite central in the conservation area). And the next day, more through the jungle and out to rice fields and to meet the River Tha the next afternoon. At the office early the next morning I met our main guide Pron and my trekking companions - a couple from France and a couple from the US. We set off by tuk tuk, picking up our assistant guide Mr Sok on the ... read more

Day 59 - I had to double check this! It's gone very quick, though I also feel I've done and seen so much, grateful that I've had the chance to be in these places so far. Part i) --> It was time to move into a new country. My first visa entry was up and though I felt so settled and happy in Thailand - I could easily have had another month up in the north and to especially get to Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son, and let alone Chiang Mai - I would get to these places later on and now felt excited to step into places and cultures a new. I guessed that I'd have to learn the new subtleties, the new 'obviouses' and all the little daily things which I probably hadn't quite ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Pai January 13th 2016

Pai has offered something different, made up of many little parts that I've enjoyed in the lush valley. A fruity, spongy, sweet, nutty slice held simply in one's hand. It's not a town of Thailand culture in the main part, the real villages that are not built on laidback backpacks exist a bike ride away. Over time Pai has developed from a remote stop off from Chiang Mai to a cute mountain smudge with new age vibe, characterised by its walking street of indie stalls and the live music and hammock decorated bars parallel to the bamboo bridged river. It has the forever winding road-made remoteness; the hilly northern thai landscape; a gleaming little river you can engage with; simple guesthouses and sit out and lay spots; and international cuisine offered along the stalls, Mexican to ... read more

Oh Pai! It's late Sunday afternoon and I'm sitting on a worn white bench at 'coffee in love' along my ride home. Looking out, first to the English country esque garden bumps sloping below, then the layer of smooth fields, then the bang up of the mountains. Mist and smoke come up between the hill layers, like steamed jam. The peaks are gorgeous. The sky is washed delicately with blues, greys and long white smudges. I can see the sandy hill path that I wandered up hours ago, I'd over shot the white Buddha in the hills that i'd been aiming for (which you can see from all over Pai). But I left my (brilliant) mountain bike halfway to get up and at least be level with Buddha, and to check there wasn't a connecting path. ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Penang » Butterworth January 7th 2016

How things change! On coming away travelling I was quite set on this idea of only ever taking short bus and train journeys - why go longer when I can stop and see somewhere, and (perhaps the bigger reasoning!) I badly misjudged what such long journeys would be like. Whilst I was also, honestly, not too hot on the idea of those sleeper trains.. no thanks! I will keep to short movements across the country, said I. The beauty of our time in Malaysia was that we didn't much think about next places (unless it was for food or sunset spots or live music). But finally I was indeed back on a next step, and I decided to get back up to north Thailand, above Sukhothai again. So here's how it went! - A) Georgetown, Penang ... read more

A boat from Langkawi, a next stop for Sam, Becca and me. Love lane, beach street, church road - romantic, stirred, eclectic. A line of mosques, churches, synagogues, temples.. Turn to music, spices, iron work twists, turn to see murals on walls. Little India, China Town. Meander; bright blues, mint, wooden panes, cobbled lanes skyscrapers, shop-houses, crumble. Chinese dragons, colonial frames. Wooden planks out to the sea; Fishermen under bulbs, look out to ships. Friends made from Sudan; coffee, temple & live music trips. Sam performing lyrics, with a Marley alike on guitar, Noodles, rotti, prawns, masala. Lanterns in paper, crafts in wood, smoking incense. Doodling in China House, cake picks, creative spirits. Mazes of art, music swirls, pulling tastes. George Town, Penang.... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Langkawi December 31st 2015

So it was off to an Island for the holidays! Pulau Langkawi of Malaysia, off Thailand's most southern Andaman coast. For Christmas I'd been in Sukhothai and had really enjoyed being away from things christmassy, bar a couple of stalls of novelty santa outfits for kids. Sukhothai had many sweet spots for me; history, museums, cycle rides, city parks, food markets, a swimming pool and city wandering (if a little bruised and bandaged from a bike drama!). On these I would expend the traditional holiday gorging. But New year, and the build up, would be with friends on a gorgeous, fun little bit of old lava. I felt a joy as I could see the sea for the first time in my trip, ready to board from Satun to Langkawi. The boat ride was a treat ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Satun December 28th 2015

Driving through Bangkok to the south terminal on a tuk tuk, and then out to Satun on the bus, I could really appreciate the concreting over of the many waterways. Left and right, Bangkok's water alleyways were obscured by grey and driven over. That's to start on a greyer note, the time ahead in Satun had many highs, surprises and tales. On my coach ride down we stopped off and ate communally around tables with lazy Susans, it was really nice, whilst thai soap operas played on big screens outside as more and more coaches arrived for the night pit stop. I had to make a sleepy note of my bus registration with the identical hoardes coming in. Luckily, Satun was the last stop of the ride, so there was no chance of me missing that, ... read more

The brilliant Homtel gang and I were settled on our next episode, we'd head down to settle in Khao Yai national park from the farm. A big goodbye and thank you to the family, such a special place. It felt strange to leave our home of the past two weeks. Swinging into Pak Chong early morning, on one of the few village buses out, we soon found stalls for our jointly craved potion of Iced Thai Tea, '4 coming right up.' We passed elephants that were walked through the streets by the market's only aggressive sellers (no thanks, we didn't want anything), and soon grabbed a hearty breakfast - various dishes, which were assured of our desired spiciness 'real spicy, honestly', including the delicious morning glory (wonderfully seasoned and spiced water spinach). From here we were ... read more
