Asia » Burma » Mandalay Region » Inle Lake September 27th 2010

Last stop on our magical journey through Myanmar. I think we saved the best for last. This is one of the most unique places I have ever been to. From our arrival at Heho airport till we reached Nyaunghswe where we boarded our boat to take us to our hotel on Inle Lake, almost every moment of this one hours journey was full of photo opportunities, if you were looking out of the left hand window you were sure to be missing something remarkable on the right. I kept asking the driver to stop so I could get out and enjoy it all. After an hour we boarded our boat for the half hours transfer to our hotel , the Inle Princess Resort, again full of wonderful sights. The last ten minutes of our journey after ... read more

Asia » Burma » Mandalay Region » Bagan September 27th 2010

Early morning arrival in Bagan, very hot. Checked into hotel the Thiripyitsaya on the banks of the Irrawaddy, beautiful villa on waters edge. Our first stop was to visit the local market which our driver assured us was like a real live colourful painting, it did not dissapoint.Relaxed for a while watching locals fishing along the river bank. Time then to hop on board our horse drawn cart for a tour around Bagans famous pagodas and temples. Sheer mind boggling to see . Beautiful red bricked structures of all shapes and sizes. Our driver gave us a very good description of the different designs and styles used . Bought a beautiful book of photos from Bagan Maung Maung , a Burmese photographer, who has his gallery at the north gate of Ananda Temple. Back to our ... read more

Asia » Burma » Mandalay Region » Mandalay September 25th 2010

Next stop on our Burmese journey was Mandalay. Having read some reviews I was pleasently surprised to really like the place, was much more intereresting that I was led to believe. We had arranged a pickup through a very helpful travel agency in Bangkok. This brought us into the mountains to visit Myanmo, summer home for the British to get out of the oppressive heat of Mandalay. About 2 hrs drive north east of Mandalay there was lots of local life to see on the way, the workers in the quarry being the most astonishing, they were breaking the stone with hammers! Backbreaking no noubt. Back to Mandalay and a visit to the U Bein Bridge at Amarapura, a 200 years old teak bridge, very pretty. The water levels in the lake were quite high. Was ... read more

Asia » Burma » Yangon Region » Yangon September 24th 2010

Burma was magical, delightful people , serene atmosphere, so many contrasts. We started our trip in Yangon, stayed at the residence of the former Governor, really nice. Wandered around the city , went for drinks at the old Strand Hotel, wonderful photos adorn the walls. A visit to the 'House of Memories' was next, this is where the father of Aung San Su Ke had his office, a bit strange and eerie at first , but after a few drinks and the company of some locals sheltering from the monsoon rains we began to enjoy ourselves. We then made a visit to the British War Graves Cemetery just outside the ciy, beautifully kept place of rest, do go and visit. At the end of our trip to Yangon we stopped to take a last look at ... read more
