Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Philip Island November 1st 2009

We had spent a couple of days in Melbourne, and were ready to take in some of the major sights. One of which was the Penguin Parade down on Phillip Island. Supposedly this is one of the most famous attractions in Australia, and once we witnessed it, it was easy to understand why. The tour started like any other. We got up at a decent time, and were picked up at our hostel. There was a bit of driving at first, but eventually we stopped for lunch (which was provided by the tour company). A bit of a bummer though, since it was first come first serve, I got stuck with a vegetarian sub (which basically included a roll and some lettuce leaves). Not the best way to start things off. We then went to Fauna ... read more

So we finally arrived in Melbourne! Talk about a huge city. We got there in the evening of the 28th, and saw a bit that night. We walked around to find some food, but couldn’t really appreciate the size of the city since it was dark. Our hostel was really nice though. Melbourne Central YHA was really new, and was much like an apartment building. The rooms were small, and everything just felt new. Talk about a treat. But it couldn’t last forever. The next morning in fact, we headed over to Melbourne Metro, just outside the core. This place was cheaper, but still pretty good. Well, after checking in, we decided to really see the city this time. We walked down to the shopping centre (Melbourne Central) and looked around for a bit. Great place, ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Great Ocean Road October 29th 2009

Our final day on the Great Ocean Road would begin at the Port Campbell National Park. We saw more of the crumbling shoreline, and more rockstacks. We then made our way back to the Twelve Apostles to see them in the morning light. There were some fantastic views. Hillary opted to take a helicopter ride and flew over the whole coastline. It was a short ride, but she loved the view and had a great time! Next we continued on our way to Melbourne. We stopped at a rainforest in the Great Otway National Park for a little walk around to see some of the local vegetation. We saw the Big Tree, but it had actually fallen over not that long ago! Even so, just lying there on the ground it certainly was big. Soon after ... read more

Our second day of the tour started early to take advantage of the cool weather. We hiked up the Wonderland Range taking in the scenery of rocky slopes and running streams. Once at the top we could now see down into the valley where we had just stayed the night before. The view was amazing, and we could see for miles around. We got back to the carpark (what parking lots seem to be called in Australia) and went back down to the valley to check out the cultural center. There was plenty of history about the native aboriginals in this area, and descriptions of what happened to the population here in Victoria. The majority were unfortunately killed or moved when settlers arrived, extinguishing much of the culture that used to dominate this part of the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Adelaide October 26th 2009

Now, although this entry is about the first day of our Great Ocean Road tour, we didn’t actually see the Great Ocean Road until our second day. Sorry to disappoint, but our next entry will have plenty about it! We had just finished our Kangaroo Island tour on the 25th, and still had one day left in Adelaide. Hill and I used this time to enjoy an awesome pancake breakfast, and do a bit of shopping. In regards to shopping, it was my turn to finally pick up a sweatshirt. We’d been chilled a good chunk of the time here in the southern half of Australia, and it was finally time to cave in and buy something warm. Of course it being spring, there wasn’t too much to choose from. We finally found a nice pink ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Kangaroo Island October 25th 2009

Our last day on Kangaroo Island was going to be a remarkable one. Because we got to see the Remarkable Rocks! Haha We started by going on the Snake Lagoon Hike. This little trek took us through what seemed to be some not-so-recently burned bush. Australia has a lot of this, and you can distinguish it by the vegetation. The taller trees may be scarred and leaf less, but closer to the ground the shrubbery will most likely have already re-grown and be looking healthy. Through this, we eventually came to a river and followed it to the Southern Ocean. There was a cool cave we climbed through, and even got a little down and dirty with climbing through one of the tight spaces. The walk then took us back to the start of the hike ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Kangaroo Island October 24th 2009

The second day on our Kangaroo Island tour was just as busy as the first. A few of our group members went for an early morning ATV drive. The rest of us were able to enjoy an extra hour’s worth of sleep, so it was an even trade. Once all back together, we went to Seal Bay. This is where a colony of Australian Sea-lions live. It’s a rough life being a sea-lion. They spend days out in the water hunting and feeding without any real rest (for fear of being eaten by sharks). Once satisfied, they return to the beach where they sleep for the next few days and gather their strength. And then it starts all over again! We were able to go right onto the beach (with a tour guide) to see the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Kangaroo Island October 23rd 2009

Friday we started our 3-day tour of Kangaroo Island. It’s a small island off the mainland in South Australia. We drove a couple of hours from Adelaide to the ferry, which is the only way to get to the island. Supposedly it’s one of the most expensive ferries in the world (in terms of fares), especially for vehicular transport (which keeps the island fairly free of too many tourists and development). After a short ride, we arrived on land! One of our first places to check out was Prospect Hill. It was a bit of a climb to the top, but we got some great views all around. You could even clearly see the narrowest part of the island, where the ocean would almost rejoin with itself. We had lunch at a eucalyptus farm, where they ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Adelaide October 20th 2009

We arrived bright and early to Adelaide that Tuesday morning. Unfortunately, a little too early for check in. But most hostels are used to it, and many have of them have free bag storage. We got rid of our stuff, and chilled out in the common room for a bit. Another great thing about YHAs, is that most of them host daily activities to help make people feel more welcome, and Tuesday just happened to be free breakfast pancakes! Talk about luck! Around the noon hour we explored the city and tried to get a feeling for where everything was. Personally, I hate the uncomfortable feeling of not knowing where I am, so exploring and figuring out where things are helps ease that feeling. After lunch we dropped by the cinema for a cheap movie. Sunday was a big day for us, the beginning of our train trip from Perth to Adelaide! We took the Indian Pacific, a rather iconic Australian railway (similar to the Ghan, which goes up the centre of Australia to Darwin). Our seats were daynighter seats, in the Red class. We had heard unfavourable things about taking the train, but much to our surprise, it was quite comfortable. There was more room than the Greyhound bus (which we had done several 24 hour trips before) and you could freely walk around the car. As an added bonus, there were plenty of free seats, so Hillary and I got to sit across from each other and spread out over two seats! That night we stopped in Kalgoorie for a couple of hours. Not much to do at midnight, ... read more
