Hill just loving the sun. Our final day on the Great Ocean Road would begin at the Port Campbell National Park. We saw more of the crumbling shoreline, and more rockstacks. We then made our way back to the Twelve Apostles to see them in the morning light. There were some fantastic views. Hillary opted to take a helicopter ride and flew over the whole coastline. It was a short ride, but she loved the view and had a great time!
Next we continued on our way to Melbourne. We stopped at a rainforest in the Great Otway National Park for a little walk around to see some of the local vegetation. We saw the Big Tree, but it had actually fallen over not that long ago! Even so, just lying there on the ground it certainly was big. Soon after we stopped for lunch. What was on the menu? Well, a typical “tour included” selection, that’s what! In other words, it was wraps. Volunteers from the group chop up the vegetables, and set out the food. There’s usually plenty of food, which is always a good thing.
No trip along the Great Ocean Road would be complete without spotting a koala or two,

As usual, water's the culprit for the rock's unique formation. and we definitely saw plenty. Though in my opinion it was probably a little dangerous to be leisurely walking along the road with your eyes staring upwards, the allure of being the first to spot any single koala was just too strong. It’s a great feeling being that person who gets to say “There’s one!!!” while pointing up to the top of a tree. Hillary in fact had quite an experience, but was left without a camera to capture it. As she was walking along the road, she spotted a koala on the ground in the bush (pretty rare) staring at her. She frantically looked around for anyone with a camera, without any luck. She tried tip toeing closer to it, but when almost within reach, the koala darted up a tree. When I finally caught up with her, she was so energetic it was hard for her to tell me what she had just seen!
One of our last stops before finishing in Melbourne was at the Rip Curl Headquarters (Torquay, Australia) for a bit of shopping. Of course the stuff was a bit pricey, but the outlet shop was just around the corner! Supposedly surfing gear is

Talk about a skinny piece of land. pretty expensive in Europe, so a lot of travelers end up buying stuff on request from their friends back at home. We did end up getting one thing at the official Rip Curl store. Anyone guess what it could have been? If you guessed a pink sweatshirt for Hillary, you’d be right! She’d been wearing the one with makeup on it since Perth and was determined to find a new one. It wasn’t a zip up, but she was still happy with it.
And with that, we drove the rest of the way to Melbourne! It was a great trip (because it was the Great Ocean Road, haha). We were really happy to have had the chance to do it, because initially (without a car) we were worried that our only option would be Greyhound, and the only view we’d see would be from the window of the bus. But Australia really is a backpacking country and lucky for us there’s a tour for everything!
