After a disappointing flight from Auckland to Bangkok with only two films to watch (as the media system had a technical error) with Thai Airways, we had a smooth transition from our guesthouse to travelling on bus to Koh Samet (including small ferry ride)– an easy 3-4 hour journey. We took a songthrew as a group from the top end of the island, where the town was and where the locals lived, the roads were nothing more than a dirt track for the vast majority of the small drive – this did lead us to wonder where our 200 baht contribution to the national park was going! We also noticed that bins were something of a luxury in Koh Samet as people had taken to dropping cans and crisp packets on the floor upon ... read more

After a relatively short journey (5 hours) we got to Rainbow beach which would be our base for our tour of Fraser Island. We stayed at Frasers on Rainbow, unfortunately had quite possibly the most uncomfortable beds we have experienced to date, they had a water proof plastic lining around the mattress, we could only assume this was to prevent bed bugs and not in case we lost all control of our bladder through the heavy consumption of alcohol, but on the plus a balcony overlooking the pool and a relaxed bar and vibe. To be able to cook in the kitchen supplied, one would need skills parable to that of a Krypton factor contestant as nothing was ever as it seemed and various kitchen implements were been used to peel the modest spud. So it ... read more

As we set out on our ventures from Sydney we had the idea to explore more of the local culture in a small fishing village called Tea Gardens. While the area was quaint and had plenty to offer in the way of fishing excursions, Dolphins in the bay and local chit-chat over a well-deserved scooner in the local bar, we felt that there was very little to offer, although the Chinese restaurant did offer a true taste of your typical British cheap take-away with neon coloured sweet and sour pork! We then headed off to Byron Bay on an overnight bus journey which Lex found to be an experience in itself sitting next to a woman whose oversized posterior took up 2 seats as she slept. We arrived in Byron Bay early and clambered down the ... read more

Well we have been here for near on 3 months now so I think it is about time we updated you all on what we have been doing and how everything has been going. After we had finished our 3 weeks in WA (Western Australia) we headed to the ever so warm and sunny Melbourne in Victoria to seek fame and fortune while taking in the sporting capital of Australia and all it had to offer. Melbourne supplied us with a very cultural feeling with its many museums, well-kept parks and picturesque side street cafes. Melbourne’s Olympic park is every sports fans dream (needless to say Kevin was in his element) with several stadiums all within a stone’s throw from each other not to mention the national sports museum. Somehow Melbourne seemed to balance its cultured ... read more
