The new year often rolls round and everything remains the same as it was before the stroke of midnight. However for 2009 the start is like no other year for us.

Adventure is afoot as we say goodbye to our friends, families, jobs and dwellings and head off to visit more than a handful of cities, countries and continents. Its very difficult to even describe how excited we both are not to say a touch nervous! New places, new countries and our comfort zones out the window.

On 16th January we depart from London Heathrow to start our adventure. Our Journey takes us accross Thaliand, Laos, Vietnam, China, Australia and America. By plane, boat, bus, car, foot and many other forms of transport. Taking in everything from tribal villiges in the mountains of China to seeing the neon lights of Vegas to the set of neighbours in Oz and everything else in between we can think of doing or afford.

Feel free to subscribe to our blog to get email updates from us and you can contact us or comment through the blog without having to sign up to it!

So for now its sawatdee, Mien, Tạm biệt, Zai Jain, goodbye and see you when we get back!

Days 26-28 Yangshuo Asia » China » Guangxi » Yangshuo
Days 26-28 Yangshuo Leaving the village behind us on foot, we catch a bus and travel via Longsheng and Guilin to Yangshuo (approx. 6 hours). The region around Yangshuo is probably the most well known scenic attraction in China, where the Li River winds its way around thousands of limestone karst mountains. Each peak is impressively named, in true Chinese tradition! Later, we take to the surrounding countryside with a local guide on bicycles, stopping at markets and picturesque villages along the way. On the evening of day 28 we transfer to Guilin (approx. 1.5 hours) and board a c [View Full Entry]

Days 24-25 Longji Terraces Day 24 our journey continues by local bus, as we cross the ancestral home of many of Southeast Asia's minority hilltribes to reach the Longji Valley (approx. 6 hours). Known as the Dragon's Backbone, this region is a remarkable feat of engineering, with rice terraces covering entire mountainsides. On day 25 we take a day-long hike through the Longji Valley to visit local hilltribe communities and learn about village life. This region boasts some of the most extensive rice terraces you'll ever see, and the fields change with the seasons, going from iridesce [View Full Entry]

Days 22-23 Chengyang Asia » China » Guangxi » Chengyang
Days 22-23 Chengyang Day 22 we take a local bus to Sanjiang (approx. 4 hours), followed by a transfer to Chengyang (approx. 1 hour). Chengyang is undoubtedly one of the most special places in China, thanks to its exquisite Wind and Rain Bridge. These bridges, or 'fengyu qiao' as they are called locally, once served religious purposes but are now mostly used as a place for the local people to sit around, chat and sell their wares. They were traditionally built entirely in pegged cedar, and it is often said that not a single nail was used in their construction. In [View Full Entry]

Days 16-17 Halong Bay On the morning of day 16 we travel to Bai Chay (approx. 3 hours) by public bus, board a chartered boat and embark on an overnight cruise through majestic Halong Bay, where 2,000 limestone peaks emerge dramatically from the sea (as seen on top gear with the floating bar/pub!). Days 14-16 Hanoi On day 13 we continue on through rugged mountain scenery. Here we enter life in the fast lane of Vietnam. Day 13 Lak Sao Asia » Vietnam
Day 13 Lak Sao A bus ride (approx. 7 hours) takes us along the mountains and limestone karsts south and east to the border town of Lak Sao. This little town offers our first taste of Vietnam. ----------- Arrived here early evening. Was very windy and dusty plus a lot cooler than we were used to. The appearence here was a little like a wild west town. After we checked in to our hotel (which was a bit like something from The Shining hehe) we had a walk round a local market and tried a local doughnut. This was a bit [View Full Entry]

Day 10 - 12 Vientiane Asia » Laos » West » Vientiane
Days 10-12 Vientiane On day 10 we travel on to the country's capital, Vientiane (approx. 3.5 hours). Life in Vientiane is relaxed with daily affairs conducted at a slow pace. Visit Laos' most important national monument, Pha That Luang, or meander down dusty riverside tracks to find villages full of friendly children, dogs and chickens. A visit to Vientiane's vibrant, colourful morning market (which incidentally is open all day!) is a chance to look for local treasures. A great way to round off the day is by enjoying a spectacular sunset over the Mekong at one of the many stilt restaura [View Full Entry]
