Ok, so it has taken me some time to get round to writing about Boracay but I think I have only just recovered from the experience! You can't sell me a bottle of rum for 70p and expect me to walk away in a straight line! So that was pretty much all there a to do on the island apart from soak up the scenery. Boracay's White Beach was voted World's number one Tropical Beach back in 1996 (when the island clearly had much fewer visitors)! But now every Summer it sees an influx of tourists - mainly Swedish from what I saw! Most of the people I met there were Swedish! They were either travelling or just taking a holiday there! Worst day of my life! Sam, Eddie and I thought it would be a good idea to take a stroll up to the top of an active volcano that erupted 12 weeks prior. The guide book states "The perfectly triangular cone of Mount Mayon makes it look, from a distance, like a child's drawing of a mountain. But don't be deceived, Mayon has claimed the lives of a number of climbers in recent years. It is the most active volcano in the country and has erupted more than 47 times in the last four centuries. As recently as December 2009 hundreds were killed by mudslides of volcanic ash.... The slopes of Mt Mayon are not as silky smooth as they look from a few miles away. So Foggy, Eddie and I headed to a small, unfrequented (and unexpecting) town in the region of Bicol called Legaspi with the main aim of spotting some whale sharks in the region. Day 1 we arrive there (don't ask me the day or date!), get picked up and find a hotel. The landing passed over this active volcano, but more about that later. Hotel was the only place in town with it's own pool so we were pretty happy with that! Think the name was Vista del Mayon if anyone is interested. It has a view of Mount Mayon (the volcano) out the back and at night you can really see the orange glow from the crater at the top. HELL of a tournament!! Arrived in Clark airport, North of Manila, on Friday 19th March around 2pm. Jumped on a bus and expected a one, maybe two hour journey. As soon as we got anywhere near Manila we hit traffic. The journey ended up taking 5 hours and I had absolutely no idea where I was or where I was going! Fortunately Foggy came out to meet to drop my stuff off at his. Quick turn-around and straight to Handle Bar. Which looked like the kind of American bar you'd find in Vietnam during the war. Only they were advertising the Burnley match the next day. So the night progressed and we headed to Borgos Street. Dodgy dodgy place!! Ironic because it was named after a priest!! So, the first week is almost done and it was a pretty full one! The week went as follows: Day one - Arrive at Kota Kinabalu airprt at 9:20am after two days of travelling and zero sleep! Ben picks me up from the airport 9:30 and we head straight to the market - still in jeans and trainers in 36 degrees - to smell some local flavours. Then met up with some of Ben's friends and headed for some brunch with his folks. After some fish-head soup and other wierd stuff we headed to a pool in a country club down the road where we had some Bloody Marys in the pool bar followed by some chicken wings and other nibbles.
