Burned bagels?
I'm sure they're supposed to be merely toasted! Joking aside, It's good to hear from you again Jon. How long are you back in town for? Also, I like the writing style in this entry. D.

Haha - I LOVE your descriptions of the English quirks! What a wonderfully strange bunch we Brits are! You should add to that list 'ridiculous number of times 'thank you' is said in an ordinary exchange between customer and cashier in an English shop'. So far I've counted it as around 8. I've even found myself saying thank you as I hand over my money... thank you for what? Stretching out your hand?!

Great Stories.
Such interesting stories Jon, your blogs have had me captivated for ages as I read through them...only a few to go now! The way you describe the people and places you encounter is fantastic, I could almost be there. Eastern Europe sounds incredible.Keep up the good work matey,I will be following your future tales with growing interest...oh and by the way, Happy New Year. Best wishes Mike. Aberdeen, Scotland.

I look forward to more writing and photos...
I have learned much from your style, and have been able to "travel" to places I might not be able to go to. The way you compose your pictures, leaves me feeling I have been there too. I can't wait for you to be discovered and the movie produced "Diary of a Pignapper)

Wishing You The best
Jonathan, Love the new pics, obviously the new Canon is treating you well. Sorry to hear about the job but maybe it was for the best. I hope the future is bright for you! Keep up the blog. Mike T.

waiting for an update!
When is there going to be another blog? I just read your comment on one of the forum topics....looking at your stats etc. I guess I'm one of them. I look for a new blog every couple of days. I like your writing and photos. The fact that you are in Ukraine caught my eye. My great grandparents came from Ukraine in the 1890's. I (unfortunetly) don't speak the language, just the odd word here and there when someone is talking. I must say that the old babunias or babushkas were/are much nicer and gentler here. I'm glad all the old 'bags' didn't immigrate here!! Take care.

i'm really sorry to read your story. it is an another example how helpless can be an outsider in a usual situation. of course there are always people who want to take advantage..

Ditto on the kefir!
As a kid I burnt my back from swimming too much in the Mediterranean to the point where even thinking about wearing a shirt was out of the question. We also got the advice to use unflavoured yoghurt and it worked like a charm.

trust me- the kefir really helps!!! :-)

Hi, you commented on my blog last summer. I've since moved on from Tver, and it's taken my awhile to get back to writing here, but I wanted to thank you for your comment. I went to a language school in Tver' for two and a half months, and traveled into Moscow on occasion, and to Petersburg once. Anyway, thanks for your comment, and good luck in Kyiv...I visited for a short two weeks in 2005, but alot of the same xenophobic comments got tossed around in Russia. And goodness knows that South Africa is not exactly the paragon of tolerance at the moment. Thanks again, -Lauren

Sounds like it was ace mate. I saw him live on Dvortsovaya when he played in Spb a few years back - it absolutely pissed it down too! A roof of umbrellas - that's what i remember...and one old man with a big beard shouting "we love you Sir Paul!". Good stuff. Bob Dylan played here a bit ago too - i saw him perform in manc when i was at uni...another genius obviously. =)

Any chance that when you were being shooed away you mispelt moronay when it might have said moronau? It jumped out at me straight away that fawr was a welsh word and I've been trying to work out if it could mean anything and marvel at welsh being on the front of a ukrainian t shirt.... because if it were moronau instead of moronay it would translate as big carrots :) Another amazing entry hun. Hope you have a lovely weekend. xx
