After all the visa hassles we finally found ourselves in Mozambique, in a little town called Metangula on the shore of lake Malawi. Tourism is at its infancy/almost non-existant here, it took is 3 days of travelling including a very pleasant train journey from Cuamba to Nampula to get near the east coast... the views from the train were spectacular and we had a cabin with fold down "beds" (more shelves really, but was the height of luxury compared to our usual modes of transport!) at every stop it was bedlam on the platform as people desperately tried to load and [View Full Entry]

Malawi

 Africa » Malawi
After nearly a month in Tanzania struggling with Swahili, relying mainly on lessons learnt from the lion king ("akuna matata" etc) we headed into Malawi, where English is the first language... Malawi is apparantly the 6th poorest country in the world and in light of that is is amazing how genuinly friendly and welcoming the poeple are here... We spent the first night in a random little site by the beach with the most welcoming host known to man! He has built everything himself including a tree-shower, huts and tree-house... unfortunately it was raining that night so couldn't sleep in the [View Full Entry]

After the hectic first month or so a bit of beach action was needed... so headed to Dar-Es-Salam to get the ferry to Zanzibar... we had heard a lot of good things about the place but were slightly concerned that it might be overrun with tourists... there were plenty of tourists there but in general it hadnt ruined the place and i would strongly recommend it as a good holiday destination, whether as a backpacker or a package holiday... and it is stupidly hot there!! Spent the first few days mincing around stone town (Zanzibar City), getting lost in the narrow [View Full Entry]

As if the Gorillas weren't enough we headed straigh to Arusha to start a 5 day safari in the Serengeti and Ngorogoro crater. Managed to get a good deal for a jeep safari with just 4 people in the jeep... After somehow missing all the lions in Kruger a few years ago, lions were top of my wanted list, and i wasn't disappointed... within half an hour of entering the park we found a pride of about 15 lions relaxing on a mound of earth right next to the road! Over the 5 days i counted 38 lions, including 2 lionesses [View Full Entry]

East Africa

 Africa
Hi all We have been in Africa for nearly a month now and already have done so much... we started in Uganda and were immediately overwhelmed by how friendly and welcoming the people were and it has been the same throughout East Africa. People will stop to say hello and ask how you are and children run out of there houses to catch a glimpse of the Muzungos (white people!). In rural parts of Uganda the children are very freindly but one time when i went to give them a present they ran away screaming... I found out later that some [View Full Entry]
