A leisurely breakfast, many slept in as we all had different departure plans. Raggi, having set everything up, departed for a camping trip on a secluded fjord island in the northwest. Wayne and I, joined by Joan and Milbrey, headed for a soak at the Blue Lagoon on the way to the Keflavik airport. The "lagoon" is a man made pool that captures the outlet water from the geothermal power plant for Reykjavik. It is well run, and many spend a spa day there. Met our driver for the transfer to Keflavik, and boarded the Seattle flight. A few hours later I was driving home. Ignored the yard that needed mowing, unpacked, and gathered info for the next day's start of a Materials Science class at UW. Back to reality(?)... read more

Our last day together included two crater hikes before lunch, a drive to Akureyri, a flight back to Reykjavik, and dinner near the pond. The morning hikes took us to Namafjall and Hverfjall, two overlapping calderas. Before and after hiking up to the main rim of Namafjall we took in the airs of the nearby mud geysers. The pumice trails easily gave way under our feet and we were fortunate to avoid the rain which would have made the surface dangerously slippery. The hike up to Hverfall on broken stone was not as eventfull as the way down. This provided a fun slalom run for the more nimble, and a challenge of balance and quad strength for others. At the bottom of the trail we entered Dimmuborgir (Dark Castles) as area of raised lava formations. After ... read more

Skirting Odadahraun, a vast lava field so large that it is sometimes referred to as a lava desert, we followed the flow of Jokulsa a Fjollum crossing several of its tributaries. Our destination was the Askja caldera. After a couple of hours the landscape turned to pumice fields before we stopped at the trail head leading into the caldera. Shortly before our arrival we passed through the area where the NASA Apollo astronauts trained for the first moon landings. Our hike took us to the crater lakes of Oskjuvatn and Viti, another name for hell. After a walk along Viti's rim some headed off on side hikes while others, myself included, headed down to the shore of Viti's lake. Part of the climb down made me think of a mini lahar. We took a swim in ... read more

This was a driving day - repositioning to the Myvatn area for a few hikes in the north central area of the country. Before leaving Hofn we took in the Glacier Museum. Besides the historical and geologic displays was a running loop of the Aston Martin car chase scene from the James Bond film Die Another Day. The scene was filmed on Jokulsarlon which had been blocked and allowed to freeze. Scenes of several other movies have been at that location. Riding along the east coast fjords we moved into one of the older parts of the country. Most of the country's landmass is relatively new; shaped by volcanic and glacial activity, and erosion. The east and west coasts are older and shaped more by sea erosion; the last volcanic activity being before the last ice ... read more

This was an ocean day, although Vatnajokull was ever present. After a short ride to Oraefi we boarded a tractor pulled hay ride. However, there was no hay on the trailer, and we headed out over a sandy plain that had once been farmland to the offshore landmass of Ingolfshofoi. This is near to where Ingolfur Arnarson, Iceland's first Nordic settler, first made his home. The area is a protected breeding ground for sea birds. Upon crossing the sand we climbed up a sandy hill to the ridge then walked across grass covered rock and stone to cliffs where we observed groups of puffin, the national bird. Along the way we observed skua guarding their nests and young. Skua fiercely guard their own nests but are notorious for robbing other species' nests. I did not see ... read more

The day began with a stop at the Vatnajokull National Park western offices and museum for a talk by the director of the park's western region. Vatnajokull is the glaicer in the southeastern part of the country that covers roughly 1/8 of Iceland. As we found later in the day it is also the name of a local beer that uses indigenous thyme for a slight floral taste. In addition to the mid-Atlantic ridge, Iceland is over a hotspot in Earth's crust centered under Vatnajokull. The are 10 volcanoes in the park, 7 of which are under the ice cap so there is a long history of interplay between fire and ice. One unique feature is the hyaloclastic brown rift rock that is formed under glaciers when lava interacts with ice and water. It is rarely ... read more

After a short back track on the Ring Road we left the Eldhraun lava plain and headed north toward Laki. We passed through an area of faux cones created by the Laki eruption of 1783 - 1784. Nearing the Lakagiger lava plain we made a stop at another waterfall whose name I did not record and cannot find on the map. Enjoy the photos. Most of the day was spent hiking on and around Laki. We had periods of fog on the mountain and very short light rain and sleet showers. Upon our return to Kirkjubaejarklauster we heard from the staff that they had had heavy rain. The waterfall behind the farm that we could not find yesterday was now flowing.... read more

Our first day's driver Matti left us yesterday and this morning we met Olie, our driver for the remainder of the trip. He would turn out to be wealth of information if one asked. A morning drive towards Myrdals-Jokull, the country's southernmost glacier, offered us views across the lava plains toward Hekla. This volcano was believed to be the entrance to hell, the name being one of several Icelandic words for that destination. At the entrance to Thorsmork, Valley of Thor, we stopped for a walk around and behind Seljalandsfoss. The suffix foss denotes a waterfall. After a drive through a flood plain up Thorsmork, including the first of many river fords, we stopped short of the end of the road, avoiding the campsites there, for a hike up a side canyon. The canyon floor was ... read more

After breakfast it was on to Thingvellir National Park on the north shore of Thingvallavatn, Icelands' largest natural lake. The park is a UNESCO Heritage site as it where the seperation of the North American and European tectonic plates is measured. Here the plates are currently moving apart at 2 cm / year. The rift runs through the center of the country from southwest to northeast and is surrounded by a region of crust breaks. If anyone offers you a drink of pure glacier water be wary. Think of all the soil and rock that is dragged by glaciers. It takes years for the water to filter out the stuff the glacier carries. For example, water from the Langjokull glacier takes 25 years to make the 35 km trip to Tingvallavatn. Rain water can take 6 ... read more

Departed SeaTac Thursday afternoon on a direct Icelandair flight to Keflavik. Landed Friday morning and were met by Raggi, our guide for the next 10 days. As the rooms were not ready yet, we dropped our bags at the hotel and took off on a walking tour of old Reykjavik. After an afternoon of further sight seeing, shopping, napping we met up for a seafood dinner before heading off to an evening of adjusting to the new time zone.... read more
