Janiney - Janiney

Janiney I am a 25 year old English teacher from Watford. I adore working with children and have a passion for travel and teaching, so it seemed sensible to combine these interests. I travelled to Nepal last year to work at an orphanage; helping with the general care of the children and upkeep of the home, as well as teaching English. I shall shortly be arriving in Kilifi, Kenya, where I shall also be working at an orphanage with a school attached.

So I noticed that my last blog entry ended rather abruptly, which I'm assuming is something to do with these dam internet cafes where the server goes off every 5 minutes! In fairness it was pretty long anyway, so I'm sure it doesn't matter... So I've just finished my second week in Kilifi, and am in Mombasa again now until I go home. It was so sad saying goodbye to the kids, they are all so lovely. The last week has been pretty stressful, with us three volunteers pretty much running the school. Its now the holidays, so we have been [View Full Entry]

So after a hard week at work, culminating in some very stressful hand and feet painting on friday, I boarded the mutatu to Mombasa to meet up with the guys before our safari saturday morning. Obviously we went for one drink, obviously this ended up with me in the casino, and finally crashing on the sofa of the volunteer house about an hour before we had to leave! Sensible Janiney... But if you are going to have a stinking hangover, you might as well suffer whilst basking in the beauty of the savannah. We headed out as stupid o'clock saturday morning [View Full Entry]

So saturday night in Mombasa became a Tequila fuelled orientation to Kenyan nightlife... after doing a bit of exploring, and finding a school canteen style restaurant which served the most amazing pizza, we decided to hit the town. We met Anthony, a volunteer who had arrived on wednesday, and joined some of the other volunteers who had already been in Mombasa a while for a "quick drink"... yeah, right. So we actually returned to the volunteer house at around 5 in the morning :-S, after dancing our little socks off to some really cool reggae in a nightclub called Tembo. We [View Full Entry]

So my journey began with the delights of Heathrow Airport. Airports are very lonely places when travelling solo, so I was glad to have the whimsical characters of the latest Marian Keyes novel to keep me company. I stopped off at Frankfurt airport to wait for my connection. Screaming for a cigarette but harbouring no delusions that the airport would allow such a filthy habit, imagine my surprise when I found these groovy little smoking pods! (You are contained in an airtight bubble so your disgustingness does not affect those around you, but hey I'm not complaining... all the more polluted [View Full Entry]

Saturday, August 18, 2007 at 5:07am So it is my final day here in Thamel - I am really looking forward to coming home, as am finding Kathmandu really touristy, loud and boring. I wish now I had spent a couple of days longer at the orphanage home. There is nothing Nepali about Thamel- it is like being in the airport arrivals lounge, rather than the actual country. Saying that, had a really good night out thursday. Met up with some guys who had travelled from Tibet, and it was the last night out for some of them. So we had [View Full Entry]

Friday, July 27, 2007 at 1:21pm Wow, well I have been here about 4 days now, and I can' t believe how quickly I have settled in! Am in the same shed with broken keyboard as before, so won't make this one too long... I am having so much fun with the kiddies! They are fantastic! During the day I help them with their English, then in the evening we do lots of singing and dancing! I have taught them the Hokey Cokey, Heads, shoulders knees and toes, and Smelly Cat lol! Yes, I have to wee in a hole, and [View Full Entry]

Saturday, August 4, 2007 at 6:12am So, have taken a brief respite from being weed on, climbed on, and drawn on, to visit Nepal at its best- I am in Soura, I spent the night with a very nice Nepali man named Ramesh... don't worry, I am not cheating- he is only 13 and is the eldest boy at the orphan home. He had never been to the national park before, and also never stayed in a hotel, so he is really pleased to be here- and I am glad of the Nepali translater! So this place has completely blown me [View Full Entry]

Kirst, am thinking of you lots and wishin u safe travels... So this mornin I flew to Mount Everest... wow. The weather was really bad, so could only see 4 of the himilayas above the clouds, but then there is only really one that I wanted to see.. Arrival in Thamel

 Asia » Nepal » Kathmandu » Thamel
Tuesday, July 24, 2007 at 2:40pm Well, I bloody made it, can you believe it? With only my amazing common sense and razor sharp wit as my guides, I have arrived in one piece! Have booked into a little hotel in Thamel for the night, then shall start the long journey to Chitwan tomorrow morning. This place is amazing- what a culture shock though. Everything in the city is just buzzing, and everyone is so friendly and helpful. They don't really seem to understand the concept of a woman travelling alone though... they keep asking "where your husband?" I'm bored of [View Full Entry]
