We delayed our departure from Mumbai by a day for the Bollywood film shoot. But on the day we were due to film they had a technical failure and the shoot was postponed. Regardless, we had to leave the following day. We were going to be in a musical scene with Shah Rukh Khan. It was so disappointing. From Mumbai we took a twelve hour train to Panjim in Goa. After a few days in Panjim we took an overnight sleeper train to Bangalore about fourteen hours. From Bangalore we had our worst travel experience yet; on another twelve or so hour train to Madurai we had waiting list tickets which did not clear, so we got on the train without a birth and for the first three hours we sat on our bags in the ... read more

Travelling in India at the moment, during peak season, is so much hassle. There are lots of Indian families travelling and getting tickets on such short notice is almost impossible. Our journey has been totaly dictated to us by whatever train we can get south. We've ended up travelling from Mumbai to Panjim in Goa and then on to Bangalore and then down to Madurai, staying a few days in each place. We flew into Mumbai on the 18th arriving at eleven pmish and spent three nights there. It was hot and hectic. As our introduction to India it was full on, the heat and the pace were hard to adjust to, but I am looking forward to spending more time there on our return journey. I think it's a place that you have to get ... read more

Due to some problems with their host family Alicia, Joanne, Rae and Maya have moved in with us at May Appiah's. So there are seven of us in the same house now. There's been a lot of illness this week. Everyone in our house bar Michael, Eddie and Rae has been ill in some form. I was invited along by Wassif to join the Muslims gathering to mark the end of their fasting. There where too many for the mosque so they all gathered outside on the sports pitch. They mostly wore long robes, but the occasional younger one was in smart trousers, shirt and shades, which, having given his robe to me, is how Wassif was dressed. We were outside for over an hour in the sun. I had no hat, no water and no ... read more

I forgot to bring my lead to the cafe yet again so still no more photos AHHH! We finely had a good mornings work, levelling off around the outside of the school kitchen. At the moment we've got the school kitchen up to the lintel level. The toilet block is almost ready for roofing but I don't think they've got the materials to do it, so we're not likely to see anything finished. We've also started work on the library, the first level is already there but due to leakages we're building another level. For the first week or so there was loads of work for us to do, mainly carrying blocks, mixing cement, digging foundations and filling in between blocks as the masons lay them. But as the structures gone up there's gradually been less ... read more

I'm back. I went to Cape Coast for the weekend with Michael, Eddie, Katie and Maya, so I couldn't access the internet. We took a metro bus from Kumasi, which was four hours of bumpy and extremely sweaty travel. The Metro is a coach with leather seats and they cram as much people as they can into one. It’s very packed and there’s no leg room at all. I was stuck between a big man called Issac and Eddie who was sweating a lot. You get on a first come first serve basis so you've got to battle to get a place. The conductor said a prayer before we set out. The coach was surrounded by people selling things through the windows. We got to Sammo's guesthouse in Cape Coast around six in the evening; better ... read more

I have just finished week two at our project. We arrived in Achiase on Saturday 23rd August. I call Achiase a village but it’s more like a town; it owes its name to the large tree in the centre that the village has been built around. The tree is the main meeting place. The house I’m staying in belongs to a woman called May. Her husband is a driver, who is currently in Togo. I have four new sisters and two brothers. The house is nothing like I expected, it’s a lot better of. There is no flushing toilet but there is a shower that hardly ever seems to be working, so it’s frequently a buckety bath, which is incredibly refreshing. I’m sharing a room with the other two guys in the trip; me and Michael ... read more

My first impression of Ghana is the overwhelmingly friendly people! The first night of our stay in Accra I met these two guys, Richard and Stevenson. They took me to the local chop bar and fed me Benku with a hot chilli pepper sauce. Benku looks like bread dough. You eat it with your fingers, dipping it in the sauce; it has a slight sour taste to it. We've spent the first week in the capital, Accra. We were met off the plane by Vincent, Nathaniel and Silvia, our tour guide, driver and project leader and mum for our stay. They were from SYTO (Student Youth Travel Organization), a Ghanaian group who deal with most of the volunteers who come to Ghana. The temperature has been around the mid 30s and pretty humid. As soon as ... read more
