Namaste, I do apologise for the tardiness of this latest post; I have truly immersed myself into the culture of Backpackistan and have been a bit too busy at Varkala beach swimming, sunning myself and drinking. I have a lot to cover so will jump right in... I guess the place to start would be where I last left you. After Kumily I wanted to experience the Backwaters; the backwaters being large canal type things that run almost the length of coastal Kerala. The main place to starting place for backwater tours was the town of Allepay. In order to reach the town I had to take the local ferry from Kottayam, a rather big dirty typically Modern Indian town. The local ferry was a brilliant way to see the back waters and I chose the ... read more

Good Afternoon People, Where you last left us the intrepid explorer was deep in the hills of the Western Ghats trying to hunt down the elusive... 'cold beer in a bar in India' Ha you thought I was going to say something hopelessly romantic and escapist didn't you? Well no, as it turns out I am partial to the odd beer so when I met a fellow countryman by the name of Richie over noodles on the main bazzar in Munnar (a rhyme!) we decided to head to the only bar in the local area. What he didn't tell me is he was traveling around India on a Royal Enfield Bullet. For those of you in the dark the bullet is an icon of Indian transportation; the bike was originally a British design that that was ... read more

Evening all from a chilly Munnar, Lets dive right into this one no messing around... The morning after writing the last entry I left the humid shores of Fort Cochin with visions of the green hills of the Western Ghats floating around my head. As there is no railway line to Munnar I had to take the bus; so off I trogged to the bus stop. Whilst waiting for the bus I got chatting to a very happy go lucky, slightly eccentric and mad but brilliantly interesting Austrian bloke called Harry who would turn out to be my mate in Munnar for a few days. I got the impression he was a bit mad because he talked a lot about beer (got me interested) and just generally expelled a mad sort of aura... and in the ... read more

Evening All, Well after my blessay (clever Stephen Fry term for a blog essay) last time which must have been a tiresome effort for you all I will try and keep this entry a bit on the shorter side. When I last left you then I was staying with the family with my old man still in tow; I will therefore continue from when he left. His flight was in the evening time last saturday from Cochin airport which is around an hour away from where we were staying. After the goodbye's we left for the airport in Deebu's (Raj's son) big SUV truck thingy on a balmy saturday evening. What followed can only be described as the most manic car journey of my relatively short lifetime. As you know most airlines open their checkin three ... read more

Hello all and a very merry (if belated) Christmas to you all, Sorry for the lateness of this blog; I have been inundated (mainly by my mother) for a requests of a new entry for a while. The tardiness however has been caused by the arrival of my old man; who in true Bloodworth fashion has had me walking everywhere, exploring everything and generally not stopping. I therefore have not had the time (even a spare half an hour) to let you lovely people (who need something to read while you are wrapped up warm with a blizzard outside) know what I have been up to on my ever continuing travels. So to start things off I think I will tell you all about the arrival of my father and all of the exciting things we ... read more

Afternoon! It's been over a week since my last entry! Mainly either because alcohol has become freely available to me again and I have been too busy spending my days swimming and sun bathing. So to recap where I last left you I was feeling pretty stupid about myself for going to Jalgaon (a town that literally has nothing going for it) when the Ajanta caves were shut. I therefore decided to cut my losses and head to Mumbai. I had had very mixed opinions of Mumbai from people; my old man described it as the worst of both western and eastern cultures. Whereas others had described it as the only place in India that is clean and you can get a decent cup of coffee. After my visit I can firmly place myself in the ... read more

Afternoon all, Well it's been an interesting few days; in which I have managed to cover a huge part of the country on some long and boring train journeys. During my last day in Varanasi i decided to have a peek at the Hindu University; the university itself was actually fairly standard, the exciting part came when the cycle rickshaw driver let me have a go. All was going well until the guy I was hanging around with decided to take a photo; this led to the inevitable stupid pose at the camera which unfortunately also led to me veering off the road and almost crashing into a fence (pictures to follow!) Moving swiftly on... Following on from Varanasi I decided to visit the town of Bodhgaya which is where the Buddha achieved enlightenment. Subsequnetly the ... read more

Hello to one and all, Well it's finally happened the laid back easy going person you all know as Jack Bloodworth has gone and lost his temper with someone. Admittedly before the event I had held my resolve as well as a Buckingham Palace guard but in the end it got to me! Following a relatively uneventful 24 hour stopover in Delhi I hopped on the train to Varanasi which is considered the holiest of holy places for Hindus (you would have thought that would mean a bit of a relaxed and somber atmosphere!). The train journey itself gave rise to some conflict. I was seated in a sleeping area with three Chinese ladies; who were friendly enough to gauge in conversation even though there English was limited and my Chinese non existent. Around an hour ... read more

Namaste, Well it's been a while since my last post; mainly because I have been having too much fun in Rishikesh, but now I am back in smelly Delhi on the way to Varansi I thought I would have a bit of a write. A lot of fun and interesting things have happened in my ten days in Rishikesh (told you it would be hard to leave). As you may or may not know Rishikesh (or more precisely laxmanjula) is situated on the river Ganges just as its leaving the foothills of the Himalayas and making its long journey into the bay of Bengal. The river at the point of Laxmanjula is fairly fast flowing and give rise to plenty of opportunities for watersports. Now being the adventurous fellow that I am I managed to persuade ... read more

Greetings from Rishikesh, Well, I think I can safely tell you all that I feel I have finally got the swing of the traveling lark! and its certainly something that is going to be hard not to repeat in the coming years. Following on from the failed border attempt of the previous night myself, Olly (English), Lin (Vietnamese), Alan (Irish) and Nick (Aussie) (who I all met in the golden temple dorms) set off for an assault on the border. With the help of a pre booked taxi ride we made the border in plenty of time to a certain feeling of expectation and pride in the air. The military presence is evident as soon as you get near to the border with armed patrols and pill boxes sandwiched in between chai wallahs and pop corn ... read more
