Day 53: Roosevelt, NJ to Belmar, NJ Total Miles: 32.1 Final Mileage: 3755.6 (Arthur’s may differ slightly based on cycling computer variation) Anyone else find it funny that we’re finally able to post pictures now that we’re home? … hmph. Delicious coffee, New Jersey bagels (much missed) and cream cheese greeted us in the morning. After a hearty breakfast we started toward the sea. Something was definitely pulling us - we got there in a quick 2 hours (thanks to Laurel for the occasional tunes and escort). As we started down Ninth St toward Ocean Ave in Belmar we could see a small crowd waving frantically and cheering us on. The few people on the beach on that heavily overcast day must have thought it strange to see people cheering us on while we carried our ... read more

Day 52: Phoenixville, PA to Roosevelt, NJ Total Miles: 77.2 Miles to date: 3723.5 We’ve been dodging the rain since probably Ohio. We were beginning to think that Zeus or Jupiter or whomever’s in charge of the rain really liked us … this morning we were finally forced into rain gear (on the brighter side I’m glad to have a reason to have carried all this rain gear) - jackets, pants, booties, the works. It’s getting harder and harder to make the inconspicuous side of the road pee stop as the traffic increases (for some reason this really hit home this morning, perhaps the rain was encouraging frequent urination). We enjoyed a morning pit stop at Rita’s for some ice and pretzels (mmm, those were the best hot pretzels ever … I suppose my days of ... read more

Day 51: York, PA to Phoenixville, PA Total Miles: 73.6 Total to date: 3646.3 The storms must have really wreaked havoc on the area last night. We woke up this morning (late as we didn’t hear our alarm ring) to find out that the power was out in all of York (not a small town) and wouldn’t be on again till noon. We felt relieved that we made it to shelter the night before. Today we weren’t alone on our bicycles. Riding through Amish and Mennonite territory (most people we met were Mennonites, despite our assumptions), bicycling is probably one of the more popular forms of transportation. For lunch we pulled up to the market and parked our bikes among about twenty others - definitely the biggest turn out we’ve seen so far. The bicycles outnumbered ... read more

Breezewood, PA to York, PA Total Miles: 115.1 (3572.7 to date) It's hard to write about days past, especially when you're so excited for days to come ... This morning we decided we were going to win that car. We've been talking about it all week and Thursday was the morning to call in to win ... so we sat in a Starbucks at an interstate rest area and bombarded the radio station with our calls for two hours, only to find out when they finally answered that we needed to email our entry. If they only would have told us that a week ago, or even this morning when they told us to call back at 9, we would have been on our way earlier ... the silly things you look forward to and think ... read more

Day 48 Washington, PA to Rockwood, PA Total Miles: 112.4 (3386.2 miles to date) Today was absolutely amazing. I really need to thank PennDOT for the Rails to Trails program. Today instead of going over many steep and savage mountain we got to ride on a bike trail for about 70 miles along rivers and shaded by trees the whole way. How, you may ask? Well PennDOT and the Parks Department decided to transform a blight on the landscape and make it useful again. There used to be railroads that took coal and lumber from the mountains of Pennsylvania and shipped it to ports and rivers for use around the country. Eventually those industries failed but the rail lines were left behind. This proved very advantageous for us since as well all know, trains can't climb ... read more

Day 47 Wheeling, WV to Washington, PA Total Miles: 31.5 (3273.8 miles to date) Well today started off gloomy and raining hard as severe thunderstorms moved through the area. It really wasn't an issue for us since we had to wait until 11am for the bike shop to open. We eventually got to the bike shop and they did have the shifter I needed. My shifter was not able to be repaired and so I had to get a whole new one. The bike tech told me that I had shifted one time too many. At that point I didn't care what the reason was, I just wanted to start riding again. Based on the mileage stated above you see that the desire to ride again was not as strong as I imagined. By the time ... read more

Day 46 Hebron, OH to Wheeling, WV Total Miles: 107.4 (3242.3 miles to date) Today we were hoping to get to the Ohio border in order to get a fresh jump on Pennsylvania. It was another really hot and humid day but again we managed to outrun and stay clear of the bad weather that some people said might develop in the afternoons. We continued on down the National Road and I was really admiring and taking pictures of old "S Bridges" and remenants of the old brick roads all while riding the pleasantly rolling hills that we thought were sure to be indicitive of what was to come. Then maybe some 40 miles into the day my right shifter totally broke and stopped working leaving me stuck with my 3 front gears and of course ... read more

Day 45 Springfield, OH to Hebron, OH Total Miles: 74.9 (3134.9 miles to date) Today found us starting late again after a nice breakfast but we weren't concerned since we were only planning on 75 miles today. I think we needed a relatively easy day before starting to ride far and fast again. Today we made a lot of stops at random places like ice cream shops, the state patrol where we finally got an Ohio map, and other random spots. We had a choice today whether we would go through or around Columbus and the state police said we'd be ok going straight through. It wasn't too bad but there were plenty of cars to keep us on our toes. Interestingly enough the vast majority of cars in the city felt good about treating us ... read more

Day 44 Knightstown, IN to Springfield, OH Total Miles: 102.0 (3059.something miles to date) Got a bit of a late start today (8am) after a great breakfast and some even better conversation with Curt and a quick stop at the Hoosier Gym. We eventually got into the swing of the day but ended up taking a lot of small breaks today to stay motivated and luckily we have the company of NPR coming in strongly and constantly now that we are near some larger cities. We made it into Ohio today where we were able to take pictures at the Ohio (bland looking) sign as well as the Indiana (much better) sign. We missed pictures of Illinois and California because of the roads we took into and out of those states...bummer. In another update of where ... read more

Day 43 Brazil, IN to Knightstown, IN Total Miles: 90.0 (2957.3 miles to date) We had some trouble getting into gear this morning since I wanted breakfast and went in search of it and we also ended up pretty tired from last night since we had neglected to account for the time zone change which robbed us of an hour of sleep. By the time we got going though the ride was pleasant and the weather was also really enjoyable (partly cloudy and only going into the 80s for the day). Despite having all of these things going for us we were still having a hard time believing that we had only gone some 30 miles by 11am. We are shooting for about 50 by 12-1ish so that was a bummer. But after a quick stop ... read more
