Gday again! Fantastic day here. Started with a great bus trip around Arcadia National Park, then we decided to do our own thing. 16 km hike through the park in some of the most fantastic scenery we have ever seen. It reminded us that that is one of the reasons we came here at this time. Perfect day again helped a lot but it was especially nice to get away on our own. Its a good group but with 52, it can be a bit taxing ....... Mainly Americans, about 8 Aussies 6 kiwis 4 Poms and 2 Isrealis. Reckon thats nearly a United Nations Quorum. Bar Harbor is a beautiful spot but it was a little overawed today with two major cruise ships and one smaller ship in pouring their guests ashore. Really stretched all ... read more

Hello again Left Ma for Me - traversed NH along the way. Heavy day in the bus - with jetlag finally catching up with us both. pretty drive tho the beach is more handsomely rugged than beautiful. Weather has been kind to us again although it is getting noticibly cooler as we move northerly. It may aslo be starting to turn. Have seen plenty of autumn colors so far - but for the areas we have been, a couple of weeks ago might have been better. We will see what the next few days bring. The housing here is quite different but attractive in its own way. Mainly wooden shingle cladding. Not quite sure why they do that. Tour company threw on a lobster dinner tonight whuch was brilliant but messsy. We all got extensive lessons ... read more

Day 2 - or is it 3? I dunno. Anyway, more of the same. Trolley tour, walking, and a river cruise up to Harvard. All very nice. One thing to note tho is that tomorrow (Monday) is Columbus day - so it is probably not the best day to be in Boston. Very heavy on tourists. Went for a walk through Little Italy to see the Paul Revere thing. Lots of People, but all quite interesting. Weather is still being kind to us as we head off on our coach trip to Bell Hardor - Maine for a couple of days. Not sure that we have a connection there so might be a bit quiet. Still catching up on sleep at the moment so off to be by 10 or so. Told today that there is ... read more

On the road again! Willie who? After a great trip - where the 28 hours went pretty well - primarily thanks to Air NZ and Premium Economy - we arrived here last night at Midnight. Hotel is fine - and we set the alarm so that the body clocks can start adjusting. Great to be awoken @ 8 after only 7 hous sleep. We hit the road running. After searching some time for breakfast, we settled on Dunkin Donuts would you believe - where Chris had a muffin with egg and bacon and I had a bagel the same - although I gave Chris my cheese in a sign of respect to this shrine of a body!! Pleasingly we were able to substitute the coffee for tea - and the tea was great. After that, hit ... read more

Breaking new ground here! I’m actually typing this in the car with Chris at the helm doing all of her allowed 130 km/h. We are on the way to Mt Isa (in Qld) having spent the night at the delightful Safari Lodge Motel in Tennant Creek. I don’t need to report on either TC or the motel, since both were adequately covered on the way up. I do however owe you on Darwin. In summary, we loved Darwin. Magnificent in the morning and the evening - but you did need to be inside or swimming in the middle of the day. The car was a good refuge as required. Our stay at the Palms City Resort was excellent. Our cabin - we really had almost the best cabin for once in our lives, was excellent. Surrounded ... read more

So now we are in Darwin. After leaving the otherwise delightful Katherine - disappointed that we couldn’t find anywhere that had wi-fi, we headed off into Kakadu - not knowing quite what to expect. What is obvious from all of the reading is that it presents very differently depending on the time of year - and the season. Our trusty Lonely Planet tells us that this (the end of the dry) is the optimum time for birdlife - and pleasingly, the best time for mosquitoes. Crossing into the park, several things are obvious. 1. It is very dry - with little evidence of any recent rain, and 2. The Aboriginal practice of burning at this time of the year continues unabated - as there are many fires that we pass right by the roadside. They apparently ... read more

Well folks, we have instalments. Prepared the blog as far as Katherine some time ago (seems eons), but comms being what they are, I havent been able to load it until now (Darwin) where I have connection for the entirety of our stay. I will bring you up to date with the next, but meantime, further tales to (hopefully) whet your appetite. As typed 4 days ago ......... You now find us in Katherine. A delightful town in the middle of nowhere and only 300kms from Darwin. But firstly, Alice. We did get a cancellation at our lodgings and were able to stay the extra night. Having travelled (and already reported upon) the West MacDonnell Ranges, we headed east the next day for a bit more of the same. Highlight was Trephina Gorge where we were ... read more

Another great day today. This place is a very pleasant place to visit - maybe especially at this time of the year. Weather is great and there is plenty to do. Today we visited Standley Chasm, Ormiston Gorge, Glen Helen Gorge, and the Ellery Creek 'Big (water) Hole'. Each was spectacular in its own way, and had we had our van, there was great camping at most of them. The pics dont do justice to Standley Chasm, as we tried to avoid others there and taking photos. It really is magnificent - particularly for about 15 minutes at noon with the sun directly overhead and the red rock each side brilliantly lit. Of course, that is also the busiest time. Our main aim was Ormiston Gorge, however that was alittle less spectacular as it had less ... read more

Well its time to get the blog underway again for the latest McLennan adventure. Stymied by a dodgy ticker we are forced to take our holiday in Oz - cancelling (at great expense) the well planned and Chris pacifying venture to the US of A. No matter. We challenge ourselves as usual. DARWIN or bust! So we start of on Monday morning (not early as we slept in) following a hectic weekend. Firstly the Grand Final followed by a well planned Russian extravaganza that tested both the new ticker and the old new shoulder - with frantic dancing including throwing around the grandson No1 to the music of a couple of fairly buxom Russian wenches that would test ANY ticker of advancing age! (Grandson No2 did his best to thwart the night, but all except Mandy ... read more

Gday all Time for a closing entry. We have been back 2-3 weeks now, and all are settling back into their 'non-travel' lifestyle - for the moment at least. We have had some contact with most travellers over that time, and all have agreed that the trip was a fantastic experience. We contacted all, in an effort to identify any highlights, and somewhat predictacbly, the responses varied so much, that no 'trend' could be identified. The one exception however, was that most identified the companionship of the group as the stand-out. We have harrassed Doug for details of his fishing trip in Bariloche, and he has let his head go. The result is the attached run-down. I indicated that I wouldn't publish it until we had photographic evidence of the outcome. Accordingly, those are also attached. ... read more
