Gday again Been in Vegas a day or so and teed up the rental car that will move us on tomorrow. Vegas is nothing more or less than we expected and we are looking forward to hitting the road tomorrow. First stops Boulder Dam then Grand Canyon. Nice appartment here at the Signature at MGM Grand. The whole place is expensive though - which surprised us a little. Our room complete with Kitchen and Jacuzzi is on the 30th floor - which makes your correspondent's knees a bit shaky when standing on the balcony. Dinner last night was an all seafood and sushi affair for $29.95++. Best value I have had. There was actually some very nice meat there as well but I couldnt fit it in after the Oysters, lobster and prawns - all before ... read more

North America » United States » Louisiana » New Orleans October 26th 2010

Largely a rest day We fly out to Vegas tomorrow for our drive through the national parks. Just jumped on the ferry across the river to Algiers today to check out a growing renovators suburb. Quite interesting. We looked at the two riverboats and all of the reports are very critical of both so we decided to give it a miss. So quiet dinner in the casino where the quality was relatively assured and the menu a bit more predictable than those at some of the local restaurants. Home to pack for an early start. A few pics from Algiers and some last shots from Bourbon Street... read more

North America » United States » Louisiana » New Orleans October 25th 2010

Gday again Quick report tonight. Quiet day. Tackled the street car system today - stretching out to all points of the compass under our own initiative. Did some walkin in City Park then checked out the 'Garden District' - the area settled initially by the Americans when Luisiana (along with a handful of other states) was annexed - from what I understand, under the Luisiana Purchase agreement with France in 1803. Then some more walking in the Audubon Park before returning to peruse the markets in the French Quarter. Tonight we had dinner in there also - but I needed to be a bit discreet as the diet is not perfect for me ........ The highlight was seeing the magnificent old houses in the Garden District - as well as the tram rides - which were ... read more

North America » United States » Louisiana » New Orleans October 24th 2010

Gday What can we say? I read in one of the books or brochures that New Orleans is 'an assault on the senses'. I couldn't express it any better myself. The noise The colour The smell The raunchiness. We've seen a few places around the world with this sort of reputation, but nothing like this ...... For all of that, its a very fun place to be. The food is cheap, the grog is cheaper, and everyone takes advantage of it. The street theatre is brilliant to boot. So far, it also seems relatively safe - so long as you watch where you go. Anyway, about the day (and yesterday - being a travel day). Air travel in the US continues to unimpress. A hassle at the airport, with Laguardia being under facilitized. For all of ... read more

North America » United States » New York » New York » Manhattan October 21st 2010

Hi all Deliberately quiet(er) day today. Major washing task at the local laundromat and we are now up to date. Still had time to squeeze in some final sightseeing including Empire State Building (amazingly we walked straight in there. We did choose to go at lunch time and it worked a treat). After that, the Chrysler Building at ground level (a bit disappointing) and Grand Central Station - magnificent. A 6 km stroll back via the Hudson river and a walk on the Hi-Line Park (a disused elevate railway just near our hotel thru the meat packing district) completed the day - but we still have dinner to contend with. We fly out tomorrow for New Orleans and we are looking forward to a chang of scenery and a change of pace. We have enjoyed the ... read more

North America » United States » New York » New York » Manhattan October 21st 2010

Another good day of travel - although the pace is hitting and we were back in the room by 5 with sundowners. Walk to Madison Square Garden to catch the bus down to the Native Indian Museum (very good), then joined 4 or 5 thousand of our closest friends for a very overrated and noisy walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. Lunch in Brooklyn then our first attempt (ultimately successful) at the subway system to get us all the way up to Central Park. Now Central Park is huge - and reasonably quiet compared to the rest of Manhattan, but not exactly manicured and not at all a peaceful stroll as one might hope for. We figure the same number of people were in the park for the day as crossed the bridge! Idiots on Bikes as ... read more

North America » United States » New York » New York October 20th 2010

Well 2 days to catch up on. Second stay in Boston was fine and the Amtrak train to NY worked like clockwork - and it was a nice journey thru Mass, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New York. More Autumnal colours all the way - and lots of coastline with huge and well stocked boat harbours. Not sure where this recession is hitting here - but it aint in New England. Checked into the Tutu centre with the news that we had been upgraded which was nice - but we are still on 10th Avenue - which is not nice. Anyway, appropriate pharmacology ensured 8 hrs of restful sleep ready to take on the full day of tourism today. First impressions of NY were not good yesterday so we didn’t do a blog. Better to wait until ... read more

North America » United States » Massachusetts » Boston October 18th 2010

Hello again Time to catch up and sign off on the coach trip - which is now over. Boston tonight and the Big Apple tomorrow on Amtrak (for a bit of a change). The last two days saw us recover from the blast of winter in Lake Placid - and return to the more normal weather for the balance of the trip. More small towns - Stockbridge and the Norman Rockwell Museum. Very nice work - if you are not sure, google it. We also took in Saratoga Springs - of horse racing fame, and Albany - the New York capital - before crossing back into Massachusetts - spending the night at the Sheraton in Springfield - the State cpital. Today we took in more early American history at Lexington and Conord - highlighting the (last) ... read more

North America » United States » New York » Adirondacks » Lake Placid October 15th 2010

More evidence of 'Global Warming'. Todays Autumn Colours tour was temorarily disbanded because of rain and snow. Unseasonal here just as it was when we were in Tokyo in April and even in Melbourne as we speak... Believe the nonsense if you like. Anyway, it was another interesting day for us - and a lot of fun. We are now comfortably in our room at Lake Placid. A stopover at Fort Ticonderoga was fascinating albeit cut short meterologically. This is where the French took on the Brits and won temporarily in a rout apparently. We didnt see as much as we might have but it was good. We were meant to do a cruise on Lake Placid and a tour up the Olympic ski-jump tower but it was all cancelled and instead we drove around and ... read more

North America » United States » Vermont » Killington October 15th 2010

Gday again after a break. Too lousy to pay the $15 fee in the last hotel - so its catch up time. We have continued to have excellent weather for the past two days but that is ending as we type. Bucketing down outside and we could even get snow tonight. Not too bad tho considering we are staying in a substantial ski resort area - even if it is a little early. The Autumnal show has been magnificent although the higher you get, the more the trees are bare. Even had a chairlift ride up WildCat Mountain. Good fun. Hard to know what photos to attach - so there is a bit of a flood with us in them....... (ego is still healthy!) We have stopped for lunch - or "just to poke 'round"according to ... read more
