19 -20 September 2016 Monday and Tuesday. Burgos I ended my last blog with my arrival in Burgos...two days early because I had to take care of my sprained ankle and rest if I was going to be able to walk the final 100 km from Lugo to Santiago, and thereby earn the Compostelo. In my original planning I had intended to make the segment of my Camino between Burgos and Lugo less walking and more sightseeing as I was going to be passing through many historical cities. I did´t want to arrive at any of them so in pain or exhausted that I would´t want to leave my albergue. So this blog covers this phase of my Camino. My first order of business on Monday was to make an appointment with a physical therapist...located conveniently ... read more

Please read my previous blog at before reading this blog as the story of my Camino begins there. 12 September 2016 Monday. Weather: Hot Distance from Villatuerta to Logroño: 0 as I took the bus from Estelle to Logroño, skipping Los Arcos and Viana. When planning my trip, I had scheduled my departure so that I would arrive in Logroño to participate in the Fiesta de San Mateo, a wine festival featuring grape crushing. I based arrival date upon the 2015 dates as the 2016 dates weren´t published until four months after I had to book an airline ticket using my frequent flyer miles. However, once the schedule was published in March 2016 the wine festival turned out to be a week later. Oh well. Today would be my day of rest...relatively. I had entered the ... read more

7 September 2016 Wednesday. Weather: Blazing hot in the high 90´s Distance from Pamplona to Cizur Menor: 7.1 km or 4.4 miles I caught the 7:30 AM train from Barcelona Sants, arriving in Pamplona at 11:17 AM. Here I would begin my pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago. When planning my pilgrimage, I debated whether to spend the night in Pamplona or start my walk right away. In the end I decided to walk the 7 kilometers to Cizur Menor where I had reservations at the highly rated Albergue (hostel) de Maribel Roncal...they care for perigrinos (pilgrims) blistered feet...not that I would need help having just started the walking part of my Camino. And besides I was anxious to get started! I figured the walk to Cizur Menor would take two hours, which would leave me ... read more

After more than a year of preparation (read my Planning blog at ) and anticipation, my departure date finally arrived. I have to admit I was more than a bit nervous...a lot more than my normal travels. Would the experience live up to my hyper-expectations? Shortly I would begin my walk of 400 kilometers (250 miles) in 28 days. I have never attempted to accomplish such a feat. I had trained for this, but would reality be much more difficult? I planned daily walking distances on the Camino to be shorter at first and then building up to longer distances as my body became use to the routine. But would I be able to accomplish my goal of reaching Santiago by 4 October without damaging my feet, legs, or something else? Many pilgrims experience similar anxiety, ... read more

As a goal oriented person, I have been fascinated for a long time by the idea of walking the eight hundred kilometer long, one thousand year old Camino Frances (French) pilgrim Way from St Jean Pied de Port in the Pyrenees of southern France to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwest Spain. By mid 2015 the idea transitioned from being a fascination to becoming an obsession. As with many pilgrims contemplating this walk, certainly the movie "The Way" provided me with inspiration and enough details to make me believe that not only was the walk feasible, but it was something I had to do. As an extrovert I looked forward to bonding with complete strangers just like Martin Sheen's character Tom experienced, although with considerable resistance on his part. Sheen's character was grieving over the ... read more

I do. This blog is going to be a bit out of the ordinary. That's because Linda and my planned trip to attend my son Will's graduation from Cardozo Law School in New York City was anything but ordinary. A couple miracles interrupted our plans. Miracles can be one of two kinds 1) highly improbable event, but still complying with the laws of nature, and 2) event which violates the laws of nature. Our daughter Tamara experienced the first kind and our daughter Rosanna experienced the second. Plan A was for Tamara and our grandson Liam and granddaughter Cecily to come to our home on Tuesday, 24 May to pet sit while Linda and I flew to New York on Wednesday, 25 May and returned to Colorado on Thursday, 2 June. Our son's graduation was on ... read more

Today my Mom left for Heaven. It's a one way trip. I will miss her a lot, as she was a constant presence in my life; always there when I needed her. At least she will be with Dad who took this same trip on August 2, 1988. And she will meet Jesus and many friends and family...what a homecoming! She took many trips for God in the 94 years she travel this earth; telling so many people about Him. That's what took her to China in 1947 to be a missionary, in the story I share in . You can read about my Mom and Dad, and how they met on the ship to China and got married in Xiahe (Labrang) in the ethnographically Tibetan part of China. They evacuated China when the Red Army ... read more

25 October 2015 Sunday. As we had toured the Hamakua and Kona Coasts the previous two days (see previous blog), this left only the Kohala Coast to complete our overview of the Big Island. We had intended to attend services at the small chapel on the resort grounds, but no one called us at 6 AM on this day so we slept in. By 9 AM we were driving north along the coast...another beautiful day of blue skies and warm trade winds. Our first stop was the Pu'ukohole Heiau National Historic Site, which has the ruins of the last major ancient Hawaiian temple. The stones are said to come from the Pololu Valley; brought here using a human chain twenty five miles long. It was on this heiau (temple platform) that King Kamehameha sacrificed his rival, ... read more

The Plan We've visited the island of Oahu many times, but never any other Hawaiian island. So last year when I got a call from Hilton Vacations offering six nights at the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Kailua-Kona coast of the Big Island for a very low price we decided to take the deal. The resort is situated on the northwestern side of the island. We planned four day trips to see every part of the island, with the days for each trip depending upon the weather: - a short day to Kailua-Kona and surrounding area. - a short day to the Kawaihae Coast (northwestern side), as far as Hawi and the Polulu Valley Overlook, and then inland to Waimea and ranch country; - a medium length day along the Kona Coast (southwestern side) to the ... read more

Our middle child, Rosanna, and her husband Evan were expecting their first child on July 9th, so of course we wanted to be there for the big event. This necessitated a road trip from our home in Woodland Park, Colorado to their home in Danbury, Connecticut and back. The 4000 mile drive was necessitated by the need to transport "tons" of stuff belonging to Rosanna and our youngest child Will, who was spending the summer with them, after they moved away without aforementioned stuff. My wife Linda and oldest daughter Tamara though it would be a good idea for Tamara and our two grandkids, Liam (4) and Cecily (2) to go along as Tamara could swap driving chores with me. So the participants were decided, and ready to go by early July. Tamara, husband Ryan, and ... read more
