The long and winding road to Rosario didnt quite lead us to what we were promised. Our first bus arrived over an hour late. Im actually convinced that the bus left without us and they had to put a replacement one in service to take us. We were the only two people on the bus, the bus was cold, dark and had no onboard entertainment. It was a miserable 7 hours or so. And just as we had resigned ourselves to not being fed and were half asleep, we were kicked off the bus and on to another one, despite being told our bus was direct to Rosario. The next bus was slightly better, they had music on and we got fed. However, when hes just not that into you came on the volume was so ... read more

South America » Argentina » Misiones » Iguazú National Park September 18th 2009

After a delightful overnight bus journey of 19 hours, which amazingly wasn´t too bad at all, we arrived in Puerto Iguazu in the middle of a tropical storm at around 9am. Coming from the glitz and glamour of Buenos Aires this place is like a shanty town. Its really small, the buildings are very simple, the roads aren´t complete and there´s really not much to do apart from the national park. After checking into our hostel we took a walk to a point on the river where the borders of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay meet. It was kind of cool to be in the middle of 3 countries at one time. Shame about the walk there, it was raining most of the way. In the afternoon we had a guided tour to the Brazilian side of ... read more

On saturday the 12 September it was time to leave Peru and Cusco for the bright lights of Buenos Aires in Argentina. My last night out in Peru was really good, the remaining trek members went to a really nice restaurant for some final pisco sours and good grub. the food looked and tasted fantastic. was a nice way to finsh off a magical week. getting to Argentina was never going to be easy, and it all started off on the wrong foot. i got a taxi to cusco airport just to find i didn´t have enough money to pay, so after trying to argue in spanish, which didnt work well at all, i showed him my empty wallet and he made a huff and drove off. at least the flight from cusco to Lima made ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Inca Trail September 11th 2009

I really don´t know where to start with this blog, i have had such an amazing 5 days. But lets start at the beginning. On saturday we all met up at the tour company´s office for a briefing of our trek. upon arrival we had to hand our passports over so they could make a copy. here comes the problem, my inca trail permit was booked under my old passport number and they told me i may not be let on the trail. thankfully, after asking me to go and lie to the police so i could obtain a police document to let me on the trail (which i told them theres no way i´m doing) they managed to pull some strings and string together a document which luckily got me through the gates. going back ... read more

So day 3 kicked off with a flight from Lima to Cuzco. And what a flight, an hour of looking out the window at the Andes. The view was just amazing. The taller mountains were covered in snow at the top and you would not believe where some people live, there are settlements in the middle of nowhere right in the mountains. cant quite imagine what life like that would be like, pretty dull i guess. I was first off the plane when we got here courtesy of a front row seat, so the first thing i done was bomb it to the baggage reclaim before the queues. this, as it turns out, wasn´t the brightest idea. you really do notice the lack of oxygen up here, so the rest of the day has involved wandering ... read more

South America September 4th 2009

Day 2 started far too early for my liking, with my body clock still on uk time i was wide awake by 4am. however i did manage to lay in for a few hours before having breakfast at 8. breakfast consisted of freshly baked bread with jam, juice and coffee which later gave me the shakes. i forgot my body doesn't take kindly to caffiene. my exploring started at the beach today. it's pretty strange as the whole coast line is dominated by cliffs and at the bottom is a road and small pebble beaches. there are lovely parks at the top of the cliffs which are really well looked after. there was only one way down to the beach, down some steep, uneven cobbled steps. i though walking down was hard work but walking back ... read more

So here I am, after 9 weeks of waiting I am finally in Peru, and boy what a shock. But lets sart at the beginning. After having a few hours slepp Tuesday night I was up at 2.30 in the morning, at Heathrow by 4.30 in the morning and sadly in Peru at 6pm local time, which is midnight for you guys. So as you can imagine it's been one long day. And it's not even 9pm here now, whereas it should be almost 3am, so confusing. My flight was full of old people coming to Peru to explore on their version of a Saga holiday and German school kids who literally took over half the plane. Never had Peru down as such a popular destination. My longest flight today was 10 hours, from Madrid to ... read more

Europe » Belgium » West Flanders » Bruges August 25th 2009

Due to popular demand, I am writing my first blog before I have actually started my travels. So the trip to Bruges was amazing, I thought I would indulge myself in luxury accommodation, fine beer, fine chocolate and the real french frie before I set off for 7 months of complete budget living. The trip to Bruges was ruined by the ever so handy UK police who decided to close the road into the port and therefore make us miss the ferry. I get the feeling that the drive into Bruges itself would have been even more painful if it wasn't for the sat nav, what a life saver. Driving round tiny one-way streets trying not to run the locals was hard enough. But Bruges itself was gorgeous. The horse and carriage ride and the boat ... read more
