Asia » Nepal October 24th 2015

Geo: 28.3649, 81.5596So we drive for two days, fill our fuel tanks completely and head into Nepal. Nepal is having a small energy crisis. India the sole supplier of their petrol and gas has decided for political reasons not to supply fuel as per their contractual agreement. Long story short there is no fuel in Nepal. Hmm so why do we go. One small issue of a Visa for Myanmar. Okay so we need to drive across Nepal to Kathmandu, get a visa and head out. Sounds simple. First stop is Bardia National Park, famous for Rhino, Tigers and Elephants. The Park is absolutely beautiful, long grass that would be over our heads. We get a guide and trek around searching for Tigers. The guide is armed with a Bamboo Pole so that is some comfort as ... read more

Geo: 30.071, 78.2582The movie… is being shot in India everyday. Okay so between us and the Germans what have we hit or what has hit us. Lets see..3 scooters, one pedestrian with the mirror to the back of the head, two small tipper trucks and one large truck with the mirror and sadly one dog did not make it. The good news is other than scratches on the mirrors no panel damage. Darren summed it up nicely. " There is only so much damage you can do in first gear".It is probably fair to say that we have tried everything from serious abuse to polite education suggestions recommending safer road use but with fairy limited success. The problems is simple.. the roads are just not built for this volume of traffic, the people are not able ... read more

Geo: 30.9959, 78.9432Okay so one of the things we as dedicated Hindus are supposed to do in our lifetimes (we have not converted but we are outnumbered so might as well adopt their beliefs) is to hike to the source of the Gangees. The ganges being the holiest river in India and reportedly the source of all life. The Rumor has it that if you bathe at the source of the Ganges, then meditate Shiva will come and enlightenment will follow. Hmm sounds like a plan. So we drive to Gangatori and camp in a carpark construction site. The night guard seemed quite happy to have us and told us we were the first ever to park in the carpark. The next morning after shaking the ice off our tent fly so we could pack it up ... read more

Geo: 31.639, 77.3406We are now heading towards Manali, yep and not just because its an old hippy hangout. We need to pass it on our way to the Spiti Valley where we hope the snow has not come in yet and we can visit some remote Monasteries and get some apple pie.The area is fairly remote so we fill up the pantry and the diesel tanks and head up the road pretty excited about visiting a remote Buddhist Monastery quite famous. Well we get about five kilometres up the road and there is a police check post. We generally approach by waiving so we confuse them then street attacking through. This is the safest way in India however this policemen seemed very intent on stopping us so we pull over. Show me your permit...hmm really we ... read more

Asia » India » Himachal Pradesh » Dharamsala October 8th 2015

Geo: 32.2207, 76.3188After Amritsar we headed for Dharmasala, the home of the Dalai Lama. Dharmasala is a collection of guest houses, hanging precariously to the side of a mountain surrounded by Tibetan Refugee houses covered in Prayer Flags. The town is full of hippy dippy foreigners seeking enlightenment, the shops contain everything we could possibly want as foreigners… well almost. Navigating the queen mary up the very narrow roads hanging off the edge of the mountain was nothing short of scary. Trying to find a place to park was even harder. We managed to find a bit of flat land at the mountaineering institute, a kind of scout camp type place for students learning mountaineering skills. We managed to get a hot bucket shower (yes this is big news.. a hot shower is a rare event ... read more

Geo: 31.6309, 74.8716So we ended up staying at St Hildas for 3 days whilst we waited for Sarah and Thomas to catch up, then headed to the border to enter India. Border crossings are never fun but given there is not too much friendliness between Pakistan and India (they hate each other) and the people don't want to travel across it was remarkably quiet. Four foreigners in a large place on our own. Still took about four hours as there were so many lists to complete on the Indian side. Thomas rolled his eyes and asked what do they do with all these lists. I pointed out it gives Indians a job as not actually about the lists really and he got it. Okay after copious quantities of paperwork we were through.Into Amritsar and went to ... read more

Geo: 31.5497, 74.3436The drive from Islamabad to Lahore was relatively uneventful, almost missed not having the Police escort.Upon entering Lahore we promptly were stopped at a Military check point….. evidently a Cantt, which is short for Cantonment which is basically a Military Zone which means…… no foreigners can enter. So we were asked to pull over for passport check, then we were informed the Major was coming down (gee I thought we are not that important… however if he wants to meet us all well and good)….then when he arrived our passports were sent his way and I started to think things were astray. The Major was a nice chap and basically said we had entered a restricted zone and our passport Pakistan Visa had a stamp next to it forbidding us entering any Military Zone….. WTF…. ... read more

Geo: 33.7076, 73.0479Well we made it to Islamabad. We were told in the morning at our hotel in Besham that we would need to be escorted for the next 50 kms. Fair enough if that is what is required then bring it on. The police waited patiently outside our hotel for us to finish breakfast and after that it was on for the next seven hours. Our escort vehicle changed every few districts, on some occasions we had an escort vehicles both infront and behind our vehicle. Great for getting through the heavy traffic. Sirens and flashing lights but they overtake trucks madly on blind mountain corners and expect us to stick close to them. They clearly got very uncomfortable if another vehicle got in the middle of our convoy. Darren had never driven so fast ... read more
