Day Five: July 30, 2009 Black Hills National Forest (South Dakota) to Bighorn National Forest (Wyoming) Day four started in the Black Hills National Park about 40 miles north of Devils Tower. In all the Northern Unit of the Black Hills, located in Wyoming, are somewhat boring, offering little spectacular views (the range is not as tall as the S.D. sections. The rain continued straight through the night, with some brief stoppages in the morning. I awoke about 8 a.m., and, knowing that I needed a break, leisurely lounged in the tent, taking time to talk sweet to Sophie (and combing her). I continued reading, plotting, and writing. The rain stopping can be tricky, as I’ve been fooled many times before, restless in the tent, the ending of pitter-patter lulling me outside, only to be driven ... read more

Day 4: Tuesday, July 28, 2009: Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and Devils Tower Leaving Wall, Sophie (etc.) and I sauntered our way through the Black Hills National Forests, largely filled with sweet-smelling pine trees. The goal for the day is to visit all three National Monuments, beginning with Mt. Rushmore in the Black Hills National Forest, then 17 miles to the Crazy Horse Memorial, and finally, approx. 150 miles to Devils Tower, forever linked to the image of Richard Dryfess in Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The site is in Wyoming. Ranking the three monuments from “favorite” down: Devils Tower, Rushmore, and Crazy Horse. Mr. Rushmore, obviously an iconic tribute to four U.S. Presidents: Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln (and, hopefully, they left room for Obama after he works his magic). The site does not ... read more

Day 3: Monday, July 27, 2009 Badlands National Park Okay…here we go, got some Badlands action going on…I arrived at the park around 3 p.m. As my computer was dead, I was anxious to “splurge” on an electric site so that I could keep up with the ‘ol blog (I don’t want to feel anxious to post…so if I miss some days, it’s because I have no access to electricity). At the gate, I was informed that there were two campgrounds, one primitive, and one “non-primitive” with water service only (no electricity and just pit toilets). I choose the “non-primitive” one, and set off on a 12 mile drive on a gravel road to the camp. The Badlands, which are aptly named, by the by, are a series of hot, mild savanna-like places with large rolling ... read more

Day 2: Fort Pierre National Grasslands, 20 miles south of Ft. Pierre, South Dakota As previously mentioned, Sophie (le dog) and I had, in just 24 hours gone from the city of big shoulders to the middle of South Dakota. I had made a good dinner, consisting of Zataran’s cheddar rice, dried Trader Joe lentils, and peanuts, drizzled with hot sauce. Excellent, and really allowed me to think seriously about lying down on a grassy bed. I had repacked the truck twice, taking a general inventory and bringing some needed items closer to the back. I now had enough room to work of the back tailgate. One item about the west is how quickly the weather can changed. The hot sun and dry conditions produces quick weather—I’ve seen a 30 degree change in temperature. During the ... read more

Day 2: Monday July 27th: Sioux Falls, South Dakota: Highlights: Mitchell Corn Palace, Wall Drug, National Grasslands camping, Badlands National Park (camping entries to follow—I’m currently adding this blog in Wall Drugs, having left the campsite this morning. I’m charging the battery of the computer while I type…) Leaving the neutral-friendly town of Sioux Falls (it has the flavor of many Midwestern towns), it was back on interstate I-90 heading west. Sophie (the dog) and I (the human) drive west, leaving Sioux Falls and its yearly air show behind. We drive 70 miles, at 70 m.p.h., passing humorous signs, such as: Dick’s Toe Service, Auto Shoppe, Town Auto Service—For all your drive train needs (It makes me wonder—could there be any “drive train need” other than: It’s broke, so fix it, dammit!), Wall Drug Store signs ... read more

Sunday July 26, 2009: Day 2: Sioux Falls, S.D. It’s 10 a.m. and Sophie (the traveling blog dog) and I are in a dog park in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Very nice—at least 25 dogs all running around here off-leash. She certainly earned it after the all-night drive from Chicago on day two of our Chicago to Salt Lake City trek…she also earned the remains of my breakfast at a diner here (veggie omelet: $7.99; coffee $1.99) It was bittersweet leaving Chicago—sweet to leave the city and bitter that it takes so much to get out of town; the traffic was terrible all the way from Bronzeville (our base), through the city and out past O’Hare. It continued onto the tollway, where they managed to both get money outta' me and hold me back/slow me down. ... read more

Saturday, July 25th, 2009: Getting physically (and mentally) ready to leave! Now that the 1.5 hours “statement of purpose” is finally done, I’m prepared to write a bit about the trip and the packing proceedures. The trip starts today…I’m sitting in my dining room, in a condo in Bronzeville, Chicago, Il., staring at a large pile of possible materials to take on the 5 week-long driving trip, traveling from Chicago, Illinois to Salt Lake City, Utah. and back again. My “hetrosexual life partner” (the fancy word for “long-term” girlfriend) has never been to Utah, so she had the idea to meet me in Salt Lake City for a week’s worth of camping and hiking in the Uinta National Wilderness Area, located approx. 50 miles east of Salt Lake City. My plan is to leave today, Saturday, ... read more

Sat. July 25th In Which the Author States his Travelblog’s Statement of Purpose: Firstly, thanks for viewing my travelblog, which covers a summer cross-country driving trip originating in Chicago, Illinois (U.S.) on July 25, 2009 with a final western destination occurring on August 14th in Salt Lake City, Utah, with various yet-to-occur adventures in between. I invite comments, suggestions, grammar corrections, etc. As I’m beginning, it’s certainly relevant to provide a “state of purpose” for the blog—to seek and state the objectives of not only the trip, but the notion of believing that it’s important/interesting enough to want to share with others. I certainly want to capture the “nuts and bolts” of traveling, adding travel tips that I find useful and that others may find helpful. In addition, I’m allowing myself room for “sidebars,” thus freeing ... read more
