Oldest City I would Love to Visit!
Hi Wayne, Thanks for the blog. Hoping your weather wrms up a tad for you! We are melting like crazy here with rain in the forecast for Tuesday and the rest of the week. Take care and enjoy. Carie Saint Augustine Florida is the oldest European city in the United States. The area was first visited by Ponce de Leon in 1513, but it was Juan Menendez de Aviles who established the first settlement, almost half a century before the first English settlers landed at Jamestown. St. Augustine grew to become the Spanish center of power in North America for almost 200 years. The 100 settlers went through the same sorts of problems that all colonists in America had to endure: a history of wars with the British, French and Native Americans, famine, plagues and one unique problem, hurricanes. In 1672 the Spanish, under the direction of Queen Mariana, built Castillo de San Marcos, a military fortress, to protect their interests from the ever expanding British Empire. St. Augustine was sacked twice by the British but the Spanish survived by laying low in the Castillo.

jealous
Hi guys, Just letting you know I'm following your new adventures. We too are getting ready for the season. There is one boat in my hospital right now recovering from rib replacement procedure. Peter Meissner's crew Jayme will be the new owner. Peter is sad to see him go, but happy to have a new playmate. Another boat is waiting in the wings to be rejuvenated. Then it will be time to go sailing again. I have spent a memorable night in St Augustine also, so I know the answer to your quiz. Much of it was on board a Canadian boat in a yard, getting over the effects of a reef encounter. You of course have little to worry about with a swing keel boat, allowing a bit of extra time for an about face. Looking forward to your next report, Peter K

Demopolis
Demopolis, the City of the People, was founded by a group of French expatriates, many of whom came to the United States after fleeing a slave rebellion on the sugar plantations of Haiti.[1] Arriving first in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, they petitioned the U.S. Congress to sell them property and received permission to buy four townships at $2 per acre with the provision that they cultivate grape vines and olive trees. Following advice obtained from experienced Western pioneers, they determined that Alabama would provide a good climate for cultivating these crops. By 14 July 1817, a small party of pioneers had settled at White Bluff on the Tombigbee River, at the present site of Demopolis, founding the Vine and Olive Colony.[2]

Your old work station
Hi, I'm also traveling and for the past 5 days have driven by Walter Reed - we're staying in Silver Springs and Brian is straight south of us, along Georgia Ave., so our route takes us by the hospital. Guess it is going to be closed and the facilities moved to VA. I reconnected with a Concordia friend who lives in Alexandria, VA - hadn't seen her for 33 years and we had a great visit to Mt Vernon with her. Headed to Gettysburg today and will look for some Quaker Burial Grounds where Dillons are buried (Grandma Cook's line). ENjoy your posts a lot and have passed them along to Paul and Brian. Critter count - 1 cat in Brian's apt.

Sweet Pictures!!
Thanks for sharing the beautiful sailboat pictures. It reminded me of a time when I was driving to go to back to UW-River Falls. I always headed up the MN side from LaCrosse to Red Wing and crossed over back to WI. At Lake City, MN the lake was white with sailboats! There had to be at least fifty. It was so beautiful. My remaining years at school I would drive and watch anticipating and wanting another glorious view but never saw it again. Have a great trip. I am enjoying following your adventure. carie

Once you get to Mobile Bay, if you have the time, John and I would like to invite you over to Gulf Shores for perhaps dinner and a drink. Our land line in 251-948-2688. Safe sailing. Jane

Enjoy the warm air
Hi Wayne; I remember seeing fort Morgan from the other side last summer. The transmission went out, and we sailed about 500 yards from the fort, which seemed to last forever. Be sure if you are sailing west from Mobile Bay, to sail out to the light house before turning to starboard. Shallow water! Fairhope is a great community. While you are there, be sure to go to "Landry's, home of the throwed rolls in Foley, about 25 miles from Fairhope. Enjoy your trip, and stop by when you can, Larry
