Rick and Wayne
We made it to the Gulf of Mexico! By Land Oct 11 Day 2
We found the Green Turtle Marina after driving around Grand Rivers, Kentucky for a while. We spent most of the day raising the mast and launching Amber Lee. The marina office is on a floating dock. We have a slip 20 feet from the office, lounge area and shower facilities. We have already met a number of cruisers. Everyone is very friendly; want to know where you came from, where you are going and what type of boat you have. We met people from Ontario, Michigan and Ohio. Many of these people are “Loopers”.
Great Loop We are the only ones around that trailered their boat to this place. Everyone else has spent weeks or months getting this far South.
Question of the Day - What is the name of the river that is dammed to form Kentucky Lake?
Oct 12 Day 3
The day started cloudy and cool. By the time we finished breakfast the sun came out and we got the sailing bug. We spent most of the morning sailing in very light winds on Lake Barkley. We dropped the anchor at noon, and while Rick warmed up the rest The Crew of the Peter Pan
The Rhodes 19 that we are cheering for of the chili, Wayne basked in the sun and 70 degree temperature. So sorry to hear about the snow flurries in Wisconsin and Minnesota. We started our road trip towing the empty trailer to Mobile in the afternoon. Made it as far as Tupelo, Mississippi.
Question of the Day - What is the name of the famous person who was born in Tupelo?) Hint; his next residence was Graceland.
Critter count 1 - I thought a kid had left a toy Lizard in the bathroom of our Microtel motel room, but when I tried to pick it up it ran away. It may have been a Gecko, but since it didn’t try to sell me insurance I figured it was a lizard.
Oct 13 Day 4
We continue to drive South on highway US 45. It has been a good 4 lane road most of the way. We arrived in Fairhope, Alabama on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay at 3:00 PM. We contacted the couple who volunteered to house us during our stay in Fairhope. Gene and Carolyn are members of the Fairhope Yacht Club who is hosting the sailboat race that Rick’s daughter, Christa,
The Peter Pan
Under sail to the 1st race is competing in. Gene met us along the highway and guided us to their 2nd house near downtown Fairhope. He had us park the trailer in their big back yard and told us we can leave it there until we get down here with the boat. Now that is what I call “REAL SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY”. We could not have found more generous hosts than Gene and Carolyn.
Oct 14 Day 5
This is the first day of Rhodes 19 sailboat racing. There are about 29 boats racing. We were not able to get on a spectator boat today to watch the race up close so we did the tourist thing. We took a drive out to Fort Morgan at the entrance of Mobile Bay where the Battle of Mobile Bay was fought during the Civil War. We came back to find out that the boat Christa is on took a 6th and 8th place in the 2 races. A good way to start! Everyone we have met here has been super nice to us.
Question of the Day - During the Battle of Mobile Bay who was the Union Admiral who said “Dam the Torpedoes, full speed
Fort Morgan
Our tour-guide Mary in profile ahead”.
Critter Count - A couple more geckos. See the photo.
Will try to update you on our adventure once we get back to Kentucky Lake.

Enjoy the warm air
Hi Wayne; I remember seeing fort Morgan from the other side last summer. The transmission went out, and we sailed about 500 yards from the fort, which seemed to last forever. Be sure if you are sailing west from Mobile Bay, to sail out to the light house before turning to starboard. Shallow water! Fairhope is a great community. While you are there, be sure to go to "Landry's, home of the throwed rolls in Foley, about 25 miles from Fairhope. Enjoy your trip, and stop by when you can, Larry
