Lucky for snow, it's awesome! The amount of prep and clothing required to enjoy the slopes is exhausting. You've got your thermals, your ski pants, your ski jacket, your ski socks, your ski boots, your neck warmer, your snowboard, your helmet, your ski goggles, your fleece and your turtleneck. Everything takes so long! It's slow time when it's snow time. And you need to wind down your expectations on what can be done and by when. We got up early to ensure we caught the first shuttle up to Coronet Peak. The alarm went off on queue and we had a snappy breakfast but then you have to put on all your gear, catch the shuttle to the snow field and then put on more gear and store the other gear you're no longer wearing in ... read more

So we're in Queenstown now and before our memories of Tekapo get swamped by the majesty of Queenstown, I want to reflect further on our time in and around Lake Tekapo. I was tired last night and fear that I didn't convey the depth of my love for Tekapo. I might even have been pronouncing it wrong. I was pronouncing it Tee-Car-Po but the post office lady, the waiters and the pharmacy attendant in Cromwell pronounce it Teh-Kah-Po. But, with all our walking and with feeling natures call half way through our first hike - we prefer to pronounce it Tay-Ka-Poo. Get it? Take a Poo? And hike might be too strong of a word. There's no special hiking boots or walking poles. We don't prepare and we don't take a compass. I prefer to call ... read more

Electric blankets and a heated cabin - Jules is in heaven. Step outside and it's bloody cold! Woke to the sound of the wind swirling off the lake and rattling our cabin door. Sun doesn't rise until 8 am but is worth the wait. The brilliant turquoise of the lake doesn't show until the sun is above the mountains. But the colour of the sky as the rising sun hits the clouds is ridiculous! The kids comment that the scenery looks fake - like someone has "put up wallpaper on the sky". I am quickly running out of superlatives for these mountains that surround us. Can't imagine walking out the front door and seeing this view every day. Majestic. Sun up at 8 am and sets before 5pm. The days are short and we only have ... read more

Up and Uber. It's as if the Uber was waiting outside our door - confirmed pick-up and Amriptal was 1 MIN away. Out we rush and we're on our way! 10 minutes from Gordon Park to BNE International - loving the Airport Link! Adrenalin is pumping and we're all excited about our trip together. Check-in was a breeze and bag drop was quick as a flash. Waiting for take-off and Millsy isn't looking good. She's crashed and is lethargic and grumpy. I scored the seat by myself and am enjoying my film (The Death of Stalin - funnier than the title suggests) when I notice Deaks and Jules trying to get my attention from across the aisle. Milla has half filled the sick-bag and I'm on call to dump the paper bag of chuck in the ... read more

We are hurtling to the airport on the 16.40 Narita Express, Tuesday afternoon in Tokyo blurring by. We missed all this with our late night arrival. The darkness from two weeks ago is filled with city and suburbs. The train line is part of life with no buffer zone between track and buildings to speak of. They don't have the luxury of space we take for granted back home. The houses get bigger and the apartment blocks fewer as we get closer to Narita. Space is still at a premium with car pack stackers still common. Rice paddies and bamboo forests now surround the houses and people go about their daily lives. I see a farmer walking on the ridge between two paddies with his dog in tow and children, finished school for the day are ... read more

I've been fascinated by the size, scale and efficiency of this city and what better way to get an understanding of it's amazing history than the excellent Edo Tokyo Museum. It traces the history of Edo/Tokyo from fishing village origins to modern day metropolis. Except - CLOSED on MONDAYS! Whoops! Probably should have checked that before we trecked across town specifically. Nevermind, Ryoguko is home to the Sumo stables and while it's not Sumo tournament season, we did see a Sumo in the flesh. Not a tall man, by any measure, but BIG! Long black hair tied in a top-knot above his dinner plate face and shoulders like a Rhino. His wide flat feet slip out of his sandals as he waddles to the train station in his yukata. The closed museum was a disappointment. Some ... read more

No chocolate eggs this Easter and not a hot cross bun in sight. We did manage to find coco-pops in the local Maruman supermarket and that kept the kids happy. Though Milla is already talking about the eggs she's going to eat on Easter Wednesday. We chill in the apartment for a bit this morning. Jules is trying to shake a headache and we are prioritising things to do. Theses small apartments aren't big enough for a family of 4 - especially with active kids. You can barely swing a ninja sword in the living area. But the kids are giving it a red hot go. The apartment is about 50m* (google says average is about 60m*) and you can understand why there is always so many people out and about. You would rarely entertain friends ... read more

As suggested by Travelling with kids - Tokyo, we'd set aside a day to visit Tokyo Disneyland. (my preferred website is tokyocheapo.com). Neither of the kids seemed particularly keen and preferred to see the pandas and monkeys at Ueno Zoo. I honestly didn't influence their decision, but can't hide my glee. Tokyocheapo.com would be proud! Ueno Zoo costs $12 entry and Disney was looking like $220 plus themepark lunch and souvenirs. Ueno and Yanaka was awesome and I'm glad my kids prefer to check out real Tokyo. Ueno revolves around Ueno-koen - a sprawling park with about 3km circumference. Within the park is the Zoo and the Tokyo National Museum. The Zoo exceeds expectations and we luckily time our visit for when the two pandas (Shin Shin and Ri Ri) are feeding. You can't help seeing ... read more

Deaks has been gradually building a ninja kit on our travels. Some ninja stars here, a hood there. He picked up some excercise pants in Uniqlo and guess what? They were black! He tracked down the katana (it's got another name but I can't remember it) in Kyoto and has googled a shop in Tokyo that sells tabi shoes. These are toe shoes or ninja shoes that construction workers still wear and are perfect for climbing across roofs. They're the Japanese Dunlop Volley. We head out of the apartment building and Deaks states we need to go right until we hit the next main road, take a left and we should reach the shop in 11-12 minutes. He's all over these directions and I know who'll be holding the google maps on our next trip. We ... read more

On the shinkansen from Kyoto to Tokyo today. This train is even faster than the Thunderbird from Kanazawa. Yet still not the fastest. The Japan Rail Pass doesn't allow for using the Nozomi and I can only imagine the standard and speed of those premium trains. The Hikari is going seriously fast! 450kms in 2 hours 40 minutes to Tokyo, with half a dozen stops along the way. And what a way to travel! We collected an array of delicious lunch items from the subterranean department store at Kyoto Station and decide to wing it in the unreserved carraige for our last Shinkansen of the trip. I instruct Milla to weave in between the boarding passengers and get us some good seats together. In her determination she pushes in front of the orderly queue as soon ... read more
