Was our last full day in New York City the best of the lot? The day was definitely Top 5 but it was the night that had Friday the 7th April in contention for Best Day of the Trip! Friday was starting with a handicap as we had to move hotels and packing suitcases and dragging them half a dozen blocks is hardly on anyone’s NYC bucket list. But, we tacked on an extra day in NYC after we’d book the Sonesta – for reasons that will become obvious later. First things first! The lateness of the booking left us with slim pickings and we Jules went for convenience and booked the Hyatt Grand Central. More than double the size of the Sonesta and with a flashier lobby, but the rooms and beds are smaller and ... read more

Happy Birthday Millsy!!! This is your day and and we'll make it great! Up early and off to the surprise breakfast at a real American diner. Jules found this awesome diner where the wait staff take turns singing show tunes. It's a great idea. How many aspiring actors/singers are in New York? Why not let the thespian waiters and waitresses display their talents while they work? And the talent amongst these guys is amazing. We pay through the nose for breakfast and Jules drinks the worst ($8) coffee of her life! It reminded her of Griffith Uni student lounge instant coffee and the nostalgia couldn't make up for the disappointment. We lined up outside for 40 minutes but the entertainment and the talent of the performers made it worth the wait. If these guys can't get ... read more

A need for sleep and a cloudy morning sees us all sleep in. Take aways from Bagel Express and a Black and White Cookie for the backpack snack stash. We walk up 5th Ave and duck in and out of shops. Every brand you can think of (and some I'm never heard of) are on this street. We check out the Adidas and Vans Shop and the girls continue their Sephora search. Again to no avail. We visit the famous toy shop from the movies BIG and Elf. Jules and Milla dance on the massive piano. The toy shop is adjacent to Rockefeller Centre - the Christmas Tree and the ice skating rink - from Elf and Hawkeye! We snub Trump Tower (he's not our guy) and head for Tiffany's. Unfortunately it's under renovation and the ... read more

Today was the best day so far! A "real" New York day. It starts with a bagel, of course. Bagel Express is a couple of streets up from 37th and is a local bagel shop / deli. There's a uniformed NYPD officer waiting for his bagel and his coffee. A 60-something lady enters with her dog on a lead and orders her regular. There's maybe 10 cream cheese flavours to choose from and as many bagel options. Milla has sesame with plain, Deaks and I order everything bagels with plain and Jules has cinnamon with blueberry cream cheese. They list the toppings as Spreads/Schmears and the inch of cream cheese between the doughy circles suggests the default CC is a spread not a schmear. Toasted perfectly and wrapped in foil my first NYC bagel is everything ... read more

Spring is in the air and there's a spring in our step. How good is sleep? Heads is clear and ready to tackle these mean streets. The kids down a bowl (coffee mug - our kitchenette has no bowls) of regret - Lucky Charms - and we hit the pavement. It's cold out and the Pret a Manger croissants and hot beverages hit the spot. We can't avoid this any longer - time to hit the subway! Travelcards purchased and we're in the flow. Catching the 6 from 33rd St to Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall is a breeze and we emerge to see the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. We're at the tip of Manhattan and the Ave/Street grid of Midtown is gone. The streets down this end of the Island are less structured and we meander towards One ... read more

How can it only be 9 am and how can it only be Sunday? Our check-in is 4 pm and while the early check-in was offered, an extra $100 for an inferior room did not appeal. We also have to stay awake to avoid jetlag and being anywhere need a pillow would be irresistible. Even on a Sunday, the city is in your face. It's skyscrapers beyond high-rises. The steam rises out of the drains and manhole covers and the smell of the city gets right into your nostrils. A quick bite at a patisserie and we make our way to Grand Central station. From The Untouchables to Gossip Girl, we all have film references to the impressive main concourse of Grand Central Station. We keep moving and stroll past the New York Public Library and ... read more

Frank Sinatra's famous lyrics "if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere!" takes on a different meaning to travelers from down under. I have no idea how many hours we were in transit, but I'm going to estimate 30. It's all a bit foggy. I know we left Brisbane on the 1st of April around10pm and we in Newark at around 8 am on the 2nd of April. The longest 12 hours ever! It's been a long haul between long hauls and we were nervously excited all day. Saturday already felt long while we waited for our late night flight time, but it had only just begun. Apart from the additional post pandemic administration requirements at check-in, the airport wait was the best wait ever! Jules (the points whisperer) had weaved her Qantas ... read more

Our last morning allows a sleep-in before we check out right on 10. There's an arbitrage crying out to me in the reception vending machine. The disrupted tooth paste and tooth brushes had spilled out of their rack and were resting on the Mama instant noodles. $4 and I reckon I’m gaining bulk value. Boom! The Mama noodles fall into the access draw followed by two toothpastes and one toothbrush. Creamy Shrimp isn’t my first choice noodle flavour, but it’s definitely top 10. Jules had spotted a café and patisserie up Elizabeth St and we have late breakfast at Imago. A Japanese inspired café with delicious breakfast and drinks stylishly presented. Yum! We buy some vinyl at Tommy Guns and Deaks chats skate shops with the dude at Jimmy’s skate shop. He even learns a unique ... read more

The Chicken (Tori) Karaage is spicy in Hobart. I ate it, but it got the better off me at 4am. Not the best night sleep for all as my pre-dawn poop disrupted our shared room. The Bury Me Standing breakfast bagels were great though and the sanctioned sleep-in was appreciated by all. We collect our e-bikes just after 10 and pedal the scenic Hobart Rivulet up to Cascade Brewery. A really pleasant ride along a shaded rivulet (brook) through South Hobart. The brewery is opening for business/tours when we arrive, but with everyone feeling good, we opt to extend our ride south up to Strickland Falls. The enthusiastic mechanic at Hobart Bike Hire recommended it and he wasn’t wrong. The small waterfall is about 300 metres above sea level in the foothills of Mt Wellington. The ... read more

The window was tight today. Hobart to Bruny Island and back, before the Kona hire expires at 2pm. And we nailed it!! Up at 7am. Bagels-to-go and on the road by 7.30. We’d been warned of the Bruny Island car ferry queues and lonely planet lists travel time as 1hr 45min from Hobart to South Bruny, Google concurred. A pandemic induced hire car shortage had lead to a price spike and we had the Kona until 2pm and wanted to use it. We’d rightly bumped Bruny Island forward a day to allow our Hartz Mountain trek but still wanted to get down there. It’s only a 35 minute drive to Kettering but the ferry could be 20 minutes or it could be an hour! If the Kona isn't returned to Hobart depot by 2pm it's an ... read more
