Day 40/41/42/43/44/45- Kompong Cham We made our third trip back to Phnom Penh from Kampot. It was an uninteresting day. We picked up our passports from Myanmar Embassy, stocked up on food at the grocery store (they had Cheetos's - so we were in heaven), watched "Knocked Up" and went to bed. The next day (Wednesday - Feb. 18th), we hopefully said our last goodbye's to Phnom Penh and headed to Kompong Cham, which is about 3 hours north east. We had the usual rest stop along the way but instead of kids in our face trying to sell us fruit there was a huge pile of fried black spiders. This one Western guy got off the bus, went straight for the spiders and popped one right in his mouth. The two of us just stood ... read more

Day 37/38/39 - Kampot/Rabbit Island We left Phnom Penh at 1PM and arrived at Kampot around 6:30PM. It was a long, bumpy ride. Once we got past the traffic in the city the SUVs slowly disappeared and the road seemed to as well. It was paved for at least the first 4 hours, but it might as not have been. It was in terrible shape - leaving us to wonder if this was a result of the Khmer Rouge. Even on parts of the road that were probably just recently paved, it was an unpleasant ride. When they paved the road they must not have expected big buses and construction trucks to come through, since the road wasn't wide enough for two trucks to pass each other. So every time, a big truck came by, we ... read more

Day 35/36 - Phnom Penh We rolled into Phnom Penh around 2PM Thursday Feb. 12 and headed straight to the guesthouse to pick up our passports. Luckily they still had them; they actually didn't even know they still had them in the safe. After to speaking to so many people in the last month, the one constant thing we kept hearing was how great Burma (Myanmar) is for travelers. So we got a tuk tuk driver Elvis (who ended up being our new BFF in Cambodia) to drive us to the embassy to see about getting visas. It was just our luck that embassy was for some reason closed that day. We had Elvis take us back to the guesthouse and he agreed to meet up at 7:45AM the next day to take us to the ... read more

Day 33/34 - Sihanoukville (don't ask us how to pronounce it as we still aren't quite sure, we call it SV) WE FORGOT OUR PASSPORTS IN PHNOM PENH!!! S was more panicked then G, since S wasn't sure if a guesthouse in SV would let us stay there w/o a passport. S did have a photocopy of her passport so she just hoped they would accept that. Luckily when we got to the place we wanted to stay at - Monkey Republic - it was no issue. However, we would have to circle back to Phnom Penh eventually for our passports but at least we had a roof over our head for the next for nights. Monkey Republic (MR) only had one double room (bungalow) left, but for $8.00 it didn't matter that it was the ... read more

Day 31/32/33 - Phnom Penh (pronounced "Nom Penh") The usual assault happened to us as we got off the boat in Phnom Penh - an attack of moto drivers but with a slight twist added in. Here there are now tuk tuk drivers after us as well. The guesthouse we had found online for cheap ($4.50 per person per night) was clear across town, so the guy offered to take us there for $3, so we just agreed as that sounded reasonable. We had to stop at an ATM though since we had no Riel (Cambodian money). The driver took us to the reliable ANZ bank and to our shock the ATM dispensed dollars. It was so weird and we both kind of looked at each other really puzzled. Our driver assured us that everywhere takes ... read more

Day 29/30/31- Chau Doc Aw yes, where were we?!? Our lovely bus ride. This was a truly local bus, the luxury of A/C & a free water bottle was long gone. The bus ticket assigns a numbered seat, but the people inside didn't abide by this, so we just sat ourselves in the second row from the front. A women in the lone right seat in the front row sat staring at us for about 20 minutes, it was awkward but we guess that's a day in the life of a celebrity (see previous blog). Our bus took off at noon as scheduled but once it pulled out of the "station" it then crawled at an extremely slow pace (an eleven year old girl on a push bike over took us) for about 15 minutes. Day 27/28/29 - Ha Tien The first bus ride from Can Tho to Rach Gia took about 31/2 hours. It was a pleasant trip and a nice way to see the countryside. To the right of the bus were houses sandwiched between the road and the canal and beyond the water, green rice paddies extended as far as the eye could see. To the left the same ramshackle houses lined the street with rice paddies in the distance. G lended her excellent vocal skills to the background Vietnamese music, much to the amusement of the guy next to us. The only compliant we had was the woman throwing up into a plastic bag right behind S. Around 4PM, we reached Rach Gia, which is along the southwestern coat of Vietnam and caught the next bus to ... read more

Day 25/26/27 - Can Tho (Mekong Delta) We decided to opt out of the 2-3 day organized tour to the Mekong that are so readily available in Saigon and do it ourselves. With help from the tourist office in Saigon, we found out that a local bus leaves every hour for Can Tho for 80,000dong ($4.50). We hopped on a bus in the city that then took us to the main bus stop just outside of HCM. From there we got on a packed minibus - there were two French girls - the rest Vietnamese and headed off for the 4 hour journey to Can Tho. Well that’s how long it’s suppose to take, but we ended up sitting on the bus for a little over 5 hours. To reach Can Tho, we had to queue ... read more

Day 21/22/23/24 - Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) We pulled into Ho Chi Minh City around 7PM on Thursday, Jan.29th, thanking all heaven that we would never have to deal with Hanh Cafe and its Open Tour bus again. We found our hotel after a bit of searching since it was in an alley of the main street - Pham Ngu Lao (backpackers central). The hostel - My My Art House - was nice enough for $20 a night. There were hotels and guesthouses which we heard offered more for the buck, but the family that ran our hostel was so lovely we didn't move. Our first night we walked around a bit and got a quick cheap bit to eat. The restaurant offered a plate of "Pring Rolls" with either "vegetables" or "shrim" even though ... read more
