Had a wonderful sleep and even better breakfast. This morning I ordered the traditional Irish breakfast. The black pudding was excellent. Left Rivermount House at 9am and headed along the coast, stopping at each town along the way. I avoided the beara peninsula and made it to Kenmare, which is just south of the Ring of Kerry. This is about a 180km loop around the Iveragh Peninsula. I ascended to a lookout point and stopped for some photos. I have been stopping quite often to take pictures of the changing landscape. If I keep this up all day then I will not get to my destination. I went over a Pass at the top of the Beara Peninsula, which is not listed on the map in front of me. It started with B. This was impressive, ... read more

Rivermount House is simply stunning. The magnificent residence is perched on the side of the hill overlooking the valley. Not long after signing off yesterday, the weather came in and the view disappeared. It rained all night, not that I really know with the double glazing and quiet rooms. Breakfast was unsurpassed, a cooked breakfast with all the trimmings, with full dinner service and cutlery. After breakfast I packed up and headed outside. Whilst it looked as if it was raining, it was actually just low cloud. The cloud that skips by the top of lofty, but here is drifts along the surface. So it was 17 degrees, dry, with visibility to 100metres. Yey, the Irish are metric, a nice change after the yards and miles back in UK. Drove 5km back into Kinsale and went ... read more

After a fine breakfast at Trinity College, I was allowed to sneak some fruit from the fruit bar (the guy liked me I guess). Checked out and walked to where to hire the car. All hired, a Blue Ford Focus, left Dublin and drove south along the motorway (allowed to do 120km/hr). Turned south at Port Laoirse (which is strange as its not on the coast - go figure) and headed through Kilkenny, Callan and onto Clonmel. Arrived at my destination in Kinsale and the most lovely B&B. It is just amazing. Rivermount House is perched on the hill overlooking the valley and the town of Kinsale. Have been starved of Internet so have sat here and caught up with things over the last hour. Might have a go at a local pub this evening and ... read more

Flew from Gatwick to Dublin today on Ryanair. Many thanks to Mark and Charly for getting me there on time. Ryanair was a little delayed and was the only flight on the board of 50 flights that didnt have a gate allocated. I wasnt nervous at all. It was the first big flight i had been on where there were no seats allocated. i was about 8th in the queue, so got a window seat in the third row. flight was good, got the Airlink to Dublin city and found Trinity college ok. Room is small but quite adequate. Wandered around for the afternoon, got my bearings. Stopped into see the Book of Kells in the library. Also got to see two other books (but dont have my notes with me right now). These are simply ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » London City August 20th 2009

Headed by Bus into London, visited the Giraffe Cafe one last time for a coffee. The weather is doing its best to rain, but can only manage to spit lightly. Typical, its first day of the last test at Kennington Oval. I went up to Trafalgar Square to soak up the buzzing atmosphere, then headed over to Tate Modern which displays 5 floors of modern art. The building is a converted power station (or substation) and is huge. I walked around there and found some amazing art from the last 120 years, including famous artists like Cezanne, Monet, Picasso. Some of the more recent works are amazing too. Wandered back to the north side of the Thames to the walkabout pub. For my last afternoon in London, I wanted to be an aussie. Spent a couple ... read more

Today I popped down to see the Queen at her Castle. She was busy so I wandered amongst the throng of tourists visiting her abode. Not too shabby. After doing a load of washing I headed through One Tree Hill gardens down to Honour Oak station. Chatted to a couple of biddy's at the station. In London no one says boo to a goose, and I love to see the reaction when you start a conversation. First they look at you as if you have committed a sin, then after a short response, they chat like theres no tomorrow. Rather fun to watch. These two were ignoring each other when I arrived, and they boarded the train chatting to each other about family and health. One of todays tasks achieved, and its only 10am! I left ... read more

We took a road trip, Oxford was our first stop. We wandered through the town and down to the Avon River and did some punting. We thought it would be better to get one with oars, and headed out on the river. The scenery was lovely. We stopped for lunch at the 'Head of River' then did some touristy looking around. I have learnt that if you hold the camera in one hand and look up at the buildings, people will walk around you. They might be cursing, but you dont have to dodge the crowd. Claire and Charlie hopped in a train for London, while us lads headed off exploring. We visited Avebury where we found the Avebury ring of stones. Avebury is the site of a large henge and several stone circles surrounding the ... read more

Hampton Court was originally the residence of King Henry VIII. It is located around 30km up the Thames from London. I took the train from Honour Oak Park to Clapham station, changed trains and went directly to Hampton Court. The guided audio tour was excellent. Hampton Court was the home of a number of monarchs, each adding their individual personal touches.... read more

Today was a day trip to Brighton, about a 1 hour train ride south of London. George IV at age 19 decided to move down to Brighton and over many years developed Brighton Pavilion. When he took over from his father as King, he got Nash to work on the building and incorporate new ideas and enhance his seaside retreat. The Pavilion played an important role in his society engagements. After George IV departed, Queen Victoria found the function of the Pavilion (batchelor pad) less appealing to her family of 9. She extracted all the furniture and items that appealed to her and then sold Brighton Pavilion to the local council. The council has worked to restore this amazing building to be the similar to how George IV and Nash intended. In the tradition of George ... read more

Lazy day today, had breakfast and did some research for the next few days, checked the weather, etc. Showered and read a book on London interesting facts and places to see. Had a cup of tea and headed down to the shops to get some fruit and other groceries. Headed into London to find an authentic English pub for a traditional English meal. Decided on the Sherlock Holmes Pub and had Bangers and mash, with an authentic English Beer (nicknamed Sherlock Holmes). The meals name was 'Dr Watsons favourite' which was listed as 'Traditional Cumberland sausages, served with buttered mashed potatoes, onions and gravy'. The meal was lovely, finished nicely with 'Chocolate Sponge Pudding with Custard' for desert. http://www.sherlockholmespub.com I wandered through the Victoria Embankment Gardens, found a nice bench and had a siesta. Visited the ... read more
