Apologies for not blogging yesteday, but we were exhausted after a long day. To start we headed up island towards the NorthShore. We drove the H3 highway which took us through the middle of the island. This highway is surrounded by a rainforest, tall trees and a one kilometer tunnel through a mountain. I felt as if I was on the site of Jurrasic Park, which they filmed on the Big Island. This was a beautiful drive that I would recommend to anyone, it is slow, 45 mph and up and down hills, but well worth the time. Once we got back on the 63 we went to Teds Bakery which is in Sunset Beach. The pineapple upside down macademia nut cake was enough to make me forget where we were going. Brian had a a ... read more

Today was supposed to be a two parter, Pearl Harbour and the Polynesian Cultural Center. We arrived at Pearl by 8:30am. We went to the two new museums there and at 10:15 went on the boat to the Arizona Memorial. What a moving site. The oil is still bubbling after all of these years. Kathy heard a story that when the survivors of the Arizona or those who had been posted to it pass on they are cremated and buried with their ship mates. The legend is that once the last sailor passes and is buried the oil will stop rising to the surface. I for one would like to believe this is true. Military men and women share a special bond, especially those that lived through the war. When we got back to Pearl we ... read more

Day 2 of the Freedom Tour as we are now calling it. This is a vacation where you can forget all of the problems you have at home for a short while, in essence have freedom from them. Hawaii is a place you can let yourself go, enjoy the sun, sand, mountains, fresh air and relax. Today we were up early, still working on Ontario time, which by the way is six hours difference from Hawaii. We rented a car and headed up island. Our first stop was Diamond Head, but the parking lot was full, we did manage to get some photos but decided to head out and see what we could find. We stopped at a light house to take some photos and watch the surfers. It is amazing to me that someone could ... read more

So here we sit at our friends house in North Vancouver looking at the cruise ships waiting to head to the airport for our 6pm flight to Honolulu. We have been planning on what to do while we are there. There's a flea market that is supposed to be top notch, there;'s the beach of course, and Diamond Head and Pearl Harbor and so much more. Brian and I are the kind of travelers who make decisions on the fly. Our friend who is travelling with has been before and hopefully we will rely on her memories to make sure we have the best trip ever. Once we get there I will start posting pictures, hopefully. By the way the anniversary dinner with the family was the best. Parents were surprised, dinner was great. Next post ... read more

So here we sit in Pearson Airport waiting for the first leg of our trip to start. Heading to Victoria to celebrate a very special anniversary, 60 years married. I can't believe my parents have been together and happy for the time. I can only hope that I am as lucky and fortunate as they have been to still love and care about each other after that many years together. We will be landing in Victoria at 11am this morning. Only Donna knows the kids are joining us on this leg of the trip. Should be a great surprise for everyone. Tomorrow it is off to Vancouver, on a float plane, never been on one before, not sure how I feel about it, but what the hell. Life is about trying new things and having fun. ... read more

So our plans to go to Scotland fell through, The next big problem was where do we go in this big world that has so much to offer. We loooked at Jamaica, Barbados, Florida, California, Oregon and finally settled on Hawaii. We have never been to Hawaii and I can"t tell you how excited I am now. I have been doing some research on what to see and do. The mountains, the beach, the volcanoes. I want to do it all, so lets see how much we can see and do in five days. Next blog from Wakiki. ... read more

July 22, 2011 Brian and I headed off to Windsor Ontario for a weekend getaway. We stayed at the Travelodge on Riverside Drive with a view of Detroit. While the room was a good price there were a lot of noisy teenagers (from across the river, who come to drink legally at age 19). First night we went to Cesars Casino and had a so-so dinner at the sports bar, gambled a bit and headed to bed early as we were planning on being the Thunder Over Michigan airshow by sunrise on Saturday. Crossing the border was easy on the Ambassador Bridge and we had no trouble getting to the airshow which was around Ypisilanti, Willow Run area. It was extremely hot and humid and rained for about ten minutes when we first arrived, but thankfully ... read more
