Day 1: Circular Quay and Sydney Opera House After a long night flight, we arrived in Sydney, Australia (though it was 1 pm in the afternoon). After we got through customs, we took a taxi to Hyde Park Inn which is conveniently located across the street from Museum Cityrail station. Our room fit all four of us and also had a kitchen which was good because we ate breakfast in our room every day. (This helped us save money because food in Australia was expensive!) The hotel overlooked Hyde Park. After we got unpacked, we went to Museum Station, the station looked like the New York or London subway. It was older and had a nice high ceiling. The trains were commuter trains and had two levels plus they had conductor that blew a whistle. I ... read more

We got to Beijing (Beijing means "Northern Capital" in Chinese) at 2:00am so we got a taxi quite easily. For some reason the Terminal we landed at, Terminal 2, had a mild stench of rotten eggs. The taxi took us to our first hotel, The Grand Hyatt at Oriental Plaza. On our first day there, it was sunny and there was not that much smog. We were quite late getting up and we just made the buffet. Then we went to Temple of Heaven Park/Titandongmen. At the Temple of Heaven we saw the Hall of Prayer Sacrifices for Good Harvest, The Kitchen for Sacrifice, The Imperial Vault of Heaven (where the Emperors and his court kept some of their money) and the Circular Mound Altar. The Temple of Heaven was built in 1420 during the early ... read more

Day 1 We went to Palau Tioman by taking a long taxi ride from the causeway at Johor Bahru. From Johor Bahru we took the 3 to Mersing. Since it was early in the morning there was lots of fog patches in the palm tree plantations and rainforest outside of Johor Bahru. After a while all we saw were miles of palm trees going towards the horizon, After two hours we reached the ferry terminal in Mersing. Once we got to Mersing we had to wait an hour. From Mersing we took a one hour and fifteen minute ferry ride to Kampong Genting, the first stop on the ferry ride, then Paya and then to the main ferry terminal at Tekek. We got off at Tekek and took a little bridge over a river that looked ... read more

Day 1 The Nikoi Island Resort is a small private island off of Bintan in Indonesia. We first took the ferry to Bintan which took 45 minutes. Then we rode a van that took us to the Nikoi island jetty. The ride there was roughly 60 minutes, we drove for 15 minutes and we reached the police post that separates the free trade zone and the zone where most of the people live. We drove through a town and then we drove through a rainforest. After 25 minutes, we entered a hilly area where they grew palm oil trees, but there was not as many palm oil trees as in Malaysia. We drove through this hilly and curvy area for roughly 30 minutes and then we saw the sea. We took a boat from the jetty ... read more

When I stepped off the plane on to the tarmac in Seim Reap, I saw a small airport with only 4 gates. After we went through security, we got into a bus that took us from the airport to our Hotel, Angkor Sohka ($120 a night, 5 star.) After we unpacked, we went to dinner on a Tuk-tuk. The lights were different then in other countries, the man on the walking sign was walking and when there was only 5 seconds left, the man started running! We ate Kebabs for dinner. TA Prom After we ate at the big breakfast buffet, we drove to Ta Prom. We drove by a baray, a former reservoir the ancient Khmer built. The reason for the barays is unknown. Up until the last decade, archeologists thought the Barays were catch ... read more

For my Grade 5 Excusion week we went to Palau Besar in Malaysia. Palau Besar is an Island of Mersing, Johor and is a tropical paradise with tree-covered mountains and white sand beaches. On the way there, we went on the PIE highway to the Tuas second link bridge, the longest bridge in Malaysia and Singapore. After we went through the check point (which had a wave hanger design), we went on the second link Tollway that connected with the North-South Fwy in Johor Bahru, the capital of Johor. We took that for awhile and then switched to the 3 to Mersing, the 3 went through fields of palm oil trees stretching toward the horizon. (The trees produce palm oil used to make plastic but in order to do that you have to release lots of Carbon Dioxide ... read more

Marina Bay Sands is an Intergrated Resort in Singapore created by Las Vegas Sands. Its location is sitting on reclaimed land overlooking Marina Bay and the downtown. On the other side, the resort faces the Pacific Ocean and bunch of container ships waiting to get into Jurong port. It cost $8 billion dollars to build--$2 billion for the land and $6 billion for the resort. It was designed by three architects: Moshe Safdie (who designed the Habit in Toronto), Arup (who designed the Sydney Opera House), and Parsons Binkerhoft. The Marina Bay Sands Integrated Resort consists of three different parts: (1) the resort which is three futuristic buildings with a skygarden ontop that looks like a boat, (2) the building in front that looks like a bunch of waves consists of a Convention Center, Casino and ... read more

We arrived at the zoo by taxi from Holland village (where we had lunch and looked at one condo.) After we bought tickets we went on "Treetop Walk" and at the entrance we saw lemur on a tree just 5 feet above my head and then on the walk (which by the way was elevated) there was a lemur on the railing! Then the other lemur came and played with that lemur. We also saw an Nile crocodile (which my dad said was the biggest crocidile he ever saw), a greater mouse deer (which looked like a deer cross kangroo and the fact that it as small),and some monkeys. Then we saw the white tigers which were roaming around and when they called out they were going to feed them in 15 minutes they went into ... read more
