This blog will be brief, I just have a lot of pictures and videos I took this past week of my kids, and I wanted to show them. Thursday we went to an Arboretum, where the kids walked around, learned nothing, and hoped to see a snake. But I did get some cute pictures and videos. Today (Friday) we had the monthly singing performance, so I have some videos of my class as well as some others. Enjoy :) ... read more

This past Saturday Daniel and I went to Insadong and met up with some friends to do some shopping. Along the way we stopped at the coolest tea shop ever. It was upstairs in a back alley, and really small! When you walked in the door you had to maneuver yourself around pillows, small tables and half walls. Anyone without good balance, in a wheelchair, or slightly overweight would be unable to come here. We sat at a little round table in the back and were given little tea menus. I ordered cold Pear Tea, Dan got cold Citrus Tea, and some of the others in our group got Chrysanthemum, Lilac and Fruit Punch teas. They were all sooo good! The neatest part about this tea shop was the birds. There were probably a dozen little ... read more

This weekend I had one of the best times since I have been in country, despite Dan still being away. (Only one more week, woo hoo!) I had a three day weekend because it was Korea's Memorial Day, so no work on Friday. I more or less wasted the day away sleeping, snacking, reading, and beginning a now full-blown addiction to Grey's Anatomy. (I swear I have never seen an episode before, but now I watch all sorts of full season TV shows online- www.watchtvsitcoms.com) Friday night I went to dinner with Kelly and Patricia. We took the train to Uijungbu, where Patricia lives, and had an awesome Kalbi (Galbi) dinner. Kalbi is the name of the meat (pork, I believe?) and at this restaurant it is marinated in a really great sweet sauce I can ... read more

It's been forever since I've posted so I thought I'd sit down and write something. Daniel has been gone since last Sunday to work the range. He will be gone for another 2-3 weeks. I have filled my weekend time with going to the pool, walking around Dongducheon, and going to dinner with friends. On Friday we had a company dinner since two teachers are leaving in the next few days. We went to a restaurant where you cook your own food, but what was ordered for us looked like pork and it was 50% fat. As much as I love meat, I just can't eat anything that fatty. So I grilled onions, mushrooms and tofu and took full advantage of not having to pay for my own alcohol. Soon we were taking shots of SoJu, ... read more

Asia » Japan » Tokyo May 6th 2008

Hi All! Unlike my last blog entry I have quite a bit to report. Dan and I flew to Tokyo this past weekend since I had a three day (Monday was Children's Day, which rings funny in my head, because as I child I would ask my parents, "If there is Mother's Day and Father's Day, how comes there's no kid's day?" and my Mother would quickly reply, "Because every day is kid's day.") Friday night we headed an hour south to Itaewon to hang out with a couple we know, then stayed in a hotel there so as to be closer to the airport. We took a nauseating taxi ride (my body can't handle Korean liquor, and after only three drinks I can get pretty hungover) to the aiport, left on the 10am flight and ... read more

Hey All! This will be a short blog, I really don't have too much to report. I have been really sick with a lovely combination of flu and chest cold. The flu kept me from work twice last week, and the chest cold loves to keep me up at night coughing. I was told the Yellow Dust (that comes in the wind from China) was to be ending shortly. Apparently, this person was mistaken, and it is just beginning. It will last about two months, and there are days when looking at the mountains it appears as if they are shrouded in a yellowish blanket. Unfortunately, the effects of the Yellow Dust are not just the inability to breathe, but it also can carry bacteria and disease. Fabulous. On that note, Daniel and I have decided ... read more

Last Sunday Daniel and I took a train to the Changdeokgung Palace (about 100 mins.) which was the home of King Taejong of the Joseon Dynasty. It was built in 1405 and was destroyed by the Japanese during the Imjin Invasion (1592-1598). Unlike the neighboring palace of Gyeongbokgung which was constructed on flat land and had a perfectly North and South axis layout, the Changdeokgung was built in the mountainside and thus the design considered the geographical landscape and looked more natural. The Palace does not allow people to wander the grounds anymore, for they found that the traffic was destroying the grounds. Therefore, you have to take one of the scheduled tours, and they occur less frequently for English-speaking tourists, just three times a day. A few interesting things we learned; -There are large pots ... read more

As I write this blog, Dan is sleeping next to me, which means that he is (yay!) home from being away for two weeks. While I hate that he was gone for so long, I’m proud of myself for my attitude about the whole situation. I’d like to think I’m not one of those women who falls apart when their husband can’t be home with them every night. And given my unique circumstances being that I am so far from home, I am really happy that these two weeks seemed to fly by, and since I kept myself busy with working and hanging out with new friends, it really wasn’t so bad. Friday Dan and I went to Uijungbu (WEE-jong-boo) with Dyer (one of the guys in his unit) and his Korean girlfriend. She owns a ... read more

I started off this blog with this "lovely" (ha) quote to show you how funny some of the slogans/quotes/advertisements I see here are. This particular sentence is written all over the mat my students sit on during story time. During Daniel's introduction classes with the Army regarding Korean culture he was presented with a gift from the Korean government. It is a set of tea spoons with masks that were created for the Yangju byeolsandae nori; a Mask Dance which is a drama that depicts the joys and sorrows of common people and social concerns. "The drama unfolds as various people including a ruined aristocrat, a deprived monk, a shaman and servants come onstage and disclose the social ironies through unique dance and gestures and both comical and provacative dialogue which are extremely entertaining." The drama ... read more

March 24, 2008 Hey everyone! I have decided to start titling my blogs with funny little quotes that I hear. I find them to be much more entertaining than "Our Easter Weekend" which was in itself not that interesting. Hope you all had a beautiful Easter. Here it was cold and rainy, and didn’t feel at all like Easter. It was early this year, and without the barrage of commercials on TV and decorations on neighbor’s lawns, it just came and went without too much thought. We did go to church, though. There is a little church a couple blocks away, which had been advertised by a business card handed to us outside of the base when we first arrived. The church was small, and the priest (?) had just taken over a few months earlier. ... read more
