Well, what a 6 months it’s been - arriving in Auckland with a massive hug from my sis and a couple of little blondies running around the airport causing havoc. It was great to see a familiar face at last. The next month was about finding our feet, forgetting the last 6 months of fun in the sun and concentrate on earning some mulla and re-stocking the depleted bank account. We didn’t have to wait long when Vic had an interview lined up for the first working day we were there and subsequently got offered the job at one of the countries top primary schools. Our luck was in. A few weeks later I got offered a 3 week marketing contract job at Honda NZ, which turned into an on-going contract and helped us settle into ... read more

On the road in Oz

As we finally make it to the other side of the world to take stock on our trip so far and settle into life in NZ here is the final travel installment before taking a well earned breather. After another pitstop in Singapore for our final taste of Asia, we headed south to Australasia aboard an Airbus A380. Several complimentary wines later we arrived in Sydney and found ourselves in a shared dorm for the same price as a penthouse anywhere in Asia. With the temperature dropping and our first taste of rain we were thankful to have been carrying our jeans and waterproofs for the last 4 months. When the clouds cleared it was time to take in the iconic images of Harbour Bridge and the Opera House before venturing to our first Australian beach ... read more

Arriving in Bali after whirlwind tour of Borneo, it was time to hit the beaches once more. First stop Kuta, a tourist resort for Aussies, great surf, Indonesian food, but lacking the Balinese culture, with Bintang (the local beer) singlets everywhere. To sample the local Hindu influences of this island we rode up to Ubud, a small town in the middle of the rice paddies. Temples at every corner, authentic Balinese shows, rituals and art to hook you in, all with a friendly smile. Unfortunately our stay here was a short one, as we raced to the idyllic island of Lombok (meaning “chilli” in the local tongue), home to some of the best beaches in the world. Jetting off from Sengiggi, a beach town launching pad to the Gili islands, we got to know all the ... read more

After dodging the red shirts in Bangkok we were back in civilisation in the cosmopolitan Singapore. Skyscrapers littering the skyline and modern roads and transport to get us from A to B. Staying with one of Vicky's old collegues and her family we were treated to a luxury apartment complete with communal pool. Despite it's over population the country was quiet, organised and CLEAN. Trying to keep Vicky away from the numerous shopping malls was the hard part, but settling for Singapore Slings in Raffles and enjoying the Quay side activity was not so hard. After re-grouping and leaving with full bellies and clean clothes we set off to Malaysia Borneo in search of endangered wildlife. Arriving in Sabah's capital Kota Kinabula the tropical wilderness unfolded. Staying in a city with jungle on your doorstep, boat ... read more

Having been templed out in Angkor Wat with the heat consistently in the 30's it was time to head south and get some beach action. Where better then the south of Thailand, our 16 hour journey from Bangkok took us to the island of Samui in the gulf of Thailand. Meeting Reg's brother James at the pier, we were soon taken to Lamai, a quieter beach resort with golden sands, turquoise waters with palm trees dotting the beachfront. The perfect opportunity to relax and explore the island and sample some of the nightlife including some Muay Thai kick boxing. From here we went the short journey across water to Koh Phangan just in time for the 'full moon' party, staying in some luxury bungalows with infinity pool looking out over the sea, as we geared ourselves ... read more

Hello again, a bit of a delay on the latest installment due to too much fun being had in the south of Thailand. Picking up on our ventures to Vietnam we decided to take the fast boat up the Mekong to the capital of Cambodia - Phnom Penh. After a dodgy waterside border crossing and a few backhanders we were on our way and travelling inland to the searing heat and arid landscape. We made it to the capital in time for the Cambodian New Year - with lots of fireworks ringing out over the city and lots of drunk tuc tuc drivers, offering to take you home - as we witnessed numerous bike crashes from the safety of a balcony restaurant. A country still in recovery from the atrocities of Pol Pot's regime - the ... read more

Hello from Vietnam. What a country. Starting in the north from the bustling city of Hanoi where motorbikes were the only considered mode of transport. Bikes literally everywhere as foreigners ran the gauntlet of trying to cross the roads whether the lights were green or not. The capital provided the ideal base to acclimatise to the frantic north and as a base to head out to Halong Bay where limestone islands jutted out of the calm green waters of the South China Sea. A 3 day junk boat trip into the mist provided the idyllic and mysterious oriental setting famous in northern Vietnam. From here we headed south to the old capital Hue, a city built around an ancient Citadel and many historical emporer tombs. The cloud still not lifting until we reached the halfway point ... read more

After an overnight bus ride we made our first overland/water border crossing in to Laos. The lack of rain during the monsoon season had left the river too low for slow boats and so instead we made our way by mini bus from the border to the northern sleepy town of Luang Nam Tha, for a taste of rural jungle village life and trekking. From here we headed to Luang Probang and the French Riviera... a trip along the Mekong River to villages and caves, turquiose blue waterfalls, early morning monks, buddahs (lots of), bike rides and night markets. By far our favourite place yet. Vang Vieng and the infamous tubing next where the parties continued well in to the small hours of the morning. We spent our first day there deciding we were both way ... read more

Hello from South East Asia. At last we are back to civilisation arriving in the now modern Bangkok complete with sky scrapers, 8 lane highways, and shopping. Our 4 day stay in Bangkok allowed us to re-group and take in this devoted capital and it's many shrines and buddhas as well as sample some new modes of transport, from ferries down the Mae Nam, the metro, local buses and the new sky train. Having eaten curry for the last 6 weeks it was time to indulge...fruit juices, shakes, thai curry's, the Chang beer and some locusts??? From here we headed north to Chaing Mai to tour the walled city, see some more stupas on bikes, take in a cooking course (well Vicky anyway) and catch a stomach bug. The town was calmer then Bankok and easy ... read more

Nepal, although a relatively small country hosted some of the most diverse landscape including 8 of the ten highest mountains on earth. From our 5 day trek in the Himalayas experiencing glorious sunshine to 2 feet of snow on the highest mountains we crossed, we went down to Chitwan, a National Park where the rare one horned rhino's could be found in the wild, as well as Tigers, sloth bears, crocodiles, 5% of the worlds birdlife, bison and wild Asian elephants. A canoe about 15 centimetres from the water went down the river where we were to come face to face with crocodiles and rare birds all around, as well as snakes and catfish - although fortunately the water was too shallow for the latter at this time of year... It was then on foot where ... read more
