Friday June 4th Maggie, Pete and I flew from Shenzhen to Xi’an airport around 4pm and arrived 2.5 hrs later in Xi’an. We had to take the airport shuttle bus into the city center where our hostel was only a 10 minute walk from the bus stop. We found the hostel and loved it as it was recommended by a few CTLC teachers as a great hostel. We got a 4 bed dorm room and had a roommate that arrived at 11pm. The hostel was noisy the 1st night but we still enjoyed it as there was a bar and restaurant in the hostel along with great Chinese traditional design. Plus we only paid 20 kuai per person a night. Yes we paid 160 kuai=$23.52 for 2 people for 4 nights to stay at Xiangzimen Youth ... read more

Friday May 28th We took an afternoon flight on China Air, so we got airline miles from a Star Alliance partner, from Shenzhen to Hangzhou arriving around 6:30pm. Then took the shuttle bus from the airport into the city arriving at the train station. From there the hostel said we could take a bus to the hostel or a taxi. We opted for a taxi as it was only to be 20 kuai=$2.93. We arrived at the hostel after the cab driver called the hostel as it was off the beaten path a little. Emerald Hostel was so relaxing, had a great atmosphere, location and we had a nice big room with a double bed. Saturday May 29th We slept in and got down to the lobby/eating area to order breakfast when they advised us ... read more

This week has been packed full of accomplishing things to do before we leave and the dreaded emotional roller coaster. When we first arrived in China EVERYTHING was a big experience now it seems it is just a way of life. We have come so far in 9 1/2 months of living in the People's Republic of China(PRC). Our training in Beijing had suggested in order to deal with culture shock we should write things down, the good and bad. After looking back at our 113 blog entries of the year we definitely have done that. Monday We started our new class schedule as our students are now in classes 1-20 instead of A1-10 and Jia 1-10. Classes 1-10 are Science focused students, Pete teaches them and 11-20 are Art focused students, I have them. Our ... read more

Saturday morning, Kelly & Cali headed back to Shenzhen as Pete & Martin came over the border to meet up with Staci and I. The four of us first went to another hostel to check in for the night. Us girls got to stay at YesInn which is a pricier hostel in Hong Kong but also the most modern of them all that we have stayed in. But we have been staying at another hostel on Hong Kong Island for cheaper, so we made the switch for the 2nd night. We then head to Just Salad, a restaurant, which Martin and Staci have raved about and we hadn't been to yet. We got to either chose a salad or a wrap. The little things we miss in Mainland China. After we enjoyed lunch we headed to ... read more

Friday, after teaching Pete and I went to get our teeth cleaned at the dentist since it only costs 150 RMB=$21.96 per person. Which we won't be able to find in the states and we badly needed it since we had our teeth cleaned by Brooke, my sister, in July. I don't think I have ever gone that long without getting my teeth cleaned. I also decided to get my teeth bleached as it was much cheaper again than the states. I have to go back one more time in a few weeks for the second treatment. After the dentist experience I was off to Hong Kong with Cali, Kelly and Staci for a Ladies Night in HK thanks to Pete as a birthday present to me for paying for the hostel at Yesinn. It took ... read more

On Thursday afternoon Cherry, my class scheduler, came into our office and advised Pete and I that we would have a fire performance rehearsal on Friday morning during 2nd period. I responded, "what will we have?" Then Cherry turned to the other 3 English teachers sitting in our office and said in Chinese what do you call what we are having tomorrow. None of them knew what we would call it so they learned something new from us, waiguorens, a fire drill. I thought to myself ok, I have no idea where they are to go but I will follow my 58 students out of the classroom and out to the soccer field. On Friday morning, I arrived for 1st period and the students of A1 were taking a class photo since it was their last ... read more

It was an early morning as the River Trekking company was to pick us up at the hostel at 7:15am. We quickly packed up our things and headed downstairs to the lobby area and waited for about 5 minutes. Then 4 men showed up and we decided they were the River Trekking company there to pick us up. They didn't speak much English and we were thinking how are they going to tell us directions or what to do later in the day. We hadn't eaten breakfast and thought we should get some food before we head out on an all day trekking adventure. We told the men in Chinese that we wanted some food and they quickly pulled over to a little shop along the road that sold baozi, bread with meat inside, very common ... read more

On Tuesday morning, we decided to get an early start and head to Hua-lien so we could spend the day seeing the city instead of wasting a day traveling. We took the subway to Taipei Main Station and found our way to the HSR(High Speed Rail) and TRA(Taiwan Railway Admin) area. We knew we wanted to go south and east but we didn't know the name of the line. We were helped by another friendly Taiwanese that spoke no English but we knew enough Mandarin in order to communicate what we wanted. The train left in 25 minutes and was a little more than we were told by the Information Center but it was coming from the Automated Machine and that was the price 441NTD/person=$14 for a 2hr and 10 minute train ride. The train was ... read more

We landed in Taipei International Airport around 9:30pm on May 2nd and were anxious to get to our hostel, Fun Taipei Backpackers. We managed to easily locate the buses that drove us into the city which is a good hour drive from the airport, 90NTD/person=$2.85. The hostel we were staying at gave us fairly detailed directions. At our bus stop we were instructed to take the adjacent subway one station over to where the hostel was located. We weren’t exactly sure as to when we were supposed to get off the bus so we asked a Taiwanese guy sitting next to us whom was speaking fluent Spanish. My thought was if he knew Spanish then he for sure speaks English. Not only did he speak English which was helpful he agreed to share a cab with ... read more
