Ellie in Cambodia

Ellie Parker

Hi! My name is Ellie, and I'm about to embark on the experience of a lifetime. I am 18 years old, and will be volunteering in Cambodia for six weeks. Through an organisation called 'World Youth International', my friend Sophie and I are helping to refurbish a school which is located roughly 40 minutes outside of Siem Reap. Together, we have raised around $2800, which has helped to fund our trip and make this dream come true!

Hello my beautiful people! WE FINISHED THE WALL! Sorry, just had to get that out of my system. After 5 weeks of sweat, blood and tears, we completed the Great Wall of Krobie Riel! Let’s start from Sunday though… On Sunday we had a delicious buffet breakfast, for $5! We were sneaky, and decided to take some extra baguettes for lunch, YUM. After a satisfying breakfast, we jumped into an air conditioned, spacious van – the most comfortable mode of transport we have been in so far! The trip was comfortable, and we arrived at a temple (who’s name I cannot remember) which was my favourite! It was really massive, and is one of the only temples that has not had any reconstruction since the Khmer Rouge. It had beautiful big blocks of stones that were ... read more

Hey all,I hope you’re all well and happy, because I know we all certainly are! Progress on the wall is fantastic- we are basically finished! On Wednesday – Friday, we filled in the back of the wall with dirt (required a lot of digging and hoeing), mixed cement for the top of the wall and poured it into the top sideboards. The contractors have basically decided to ‘use and abuse’ us, as I like to see it. They’ve figured that while they have five free labourers, they may as well take advantage of us and use us for other small projects. We have started on a drainage system at the front of the school, which meant we had to dig out a tonne of dirt so we could put in two new massive cement pipes. Once ... read more

Sue’sdai everyone! (In case you’re wondering, that means “hi” in Khmer). I hope everyone is well and happy! It is 8:22pm on a Tuesday night, and I’m missing you all like crazy…. Only 14 days to go! Continuing on from my last blog, where I was curled up into bed watching Lord of the Rings….! That night flew by, and after the most comfortable sleep of my life, we woke up and had breakfast at the Green Gecko Café – I had breakfast quesadillas (consisting of cheese, egg, beans and salsa… an interesting combination!). After breakfast we went to the hotel, where Sophie and I indulged one more movie – ICE AGE! When Ice Age ended, we left to visit the local markets – an experience in itself. The overpowering, poignant odour of rotting animal flesh ... read more

Once again, I have decided technology is against me. About three hours ago, I sat down and once again typed up a 1100 word blog, that was humorous, interesting and entertaining. The internet was not working, so I thought I’d be clever and ‘select all’ and ‘copy’, so it would be forever stored in clipboard. I then proceeded to restart the computer, open up the TravelBlog webpage, and smiling quietly to myself, hit the paste button and stared at a blank screen. Oh My God… clipboard deletes itself every time you turn off the computer. I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO FRUSTRATED IN MY ENTIRE LIFE! So, after going out for dinner and getting changed into my pyjamas, I am going to give this another go! Thursday morning, we grabbed a quick breakfast, then went to an ... read more

Hey all. Well this is depressing... I literally just spent about 40 minutes typing up this awesome blog entry for you, and then the computer suddenly restarted itself, and deleted 1200 words. I'm really sorry, but I'm tired and bothered, so this is going to be way more brief. Monday - Woke up feeling horrible once again. I stayed home from the work site as I felt so weak and useless. You know that book I told you about? I finished it, all 550 pages in that one day - IT WAS A TERRIBLE BOOK! Very cliched and simple. After spending all day in bed feeling sorry for myself and drinking water, the girls finally came home. They told me they'd had an easy day on the worksite, which made me feel a bit better about ... read more

Despite just throwing up, I feel it is my duty to write on this blog. It has been more than three days since my last one, and for these last few days I have felt so guilty for not writing, so... here I am! As I've been explaining, the work is hard at the school. Though, progress is going well, and tomorrow we will continue brick-laying for six hours in the blistering heat - all for a good cause though! Saturday was a jam-packed day, and we had a fantastic time! We set our alarm clocks nice and early (7am), to leave on a tuk-tuk to go to our destination. Our first stop was the Butterfly Farm! It was a beautiful garden that housed over a thousand butterflies, insects and other animals. Our VERY enthusiastic tour ... read more

Hello! I know it has been three days since I last blogged, but I am so tired and exhausted! By the way, hump day = Wednesday... today was the hardest day, hopefully it will be easier on Thursday and Friday! The last few days have been on the worksite, non-stop in the heat (today was 43 degrees). Here is a brief description of what we have achieved on the project so far: - Created the metal foundations by bending metal, cutting metal, creating smaller triangles to go on the foundations and twisting the triangles onto the metal with small wire. - Carting about 3000 bricks ( a pile 1.5m high by 5m) around a 200m obstacle course, dodging children, cows, rubbish, rocks, burning piles of rubbish and motorbikes. - Spending hours at a time digging and hoeing ... read more

By this time, you've probably re-read the title of this blog twice and thought to yourself, "what on Earth is she on about?" I promise I will reveal it later in this entry! Last night we went to a semi-concert/lecture by a man known as 'Beatacello'. His real name is Dr Beat Richner, and his story of building hospitals in Cambodia. He is an older Swiss man, who is very talented at playing the cello - such a magnificent instrument! In his show, he played the cello for us, and also explained about the construction of his five hospitals in Cambodia. His hospitals are free for all Cambodian children, and it was just so inspiring. To see this one man, who had a dream of saving the children - dreams really can come true. Dr Beat ... read more

I AM SO SORRY FOR NOT BLOGGING SOONER! A lot has been going on, and time has been so scarce! I have no idea where to start, these last few days have been absolutely crazy. We bought brand new bikes ($50!!) which have baskets and lights for our ride to the village. I am absolutely in love with them, they look like they belong in a French romance movie! Our schedule for weekdays is as follows: 6am - Wake up, have breakfast and get changed into work gear (long pants, heavy duty boots, tshirts, caps and sunglasses) 7am - Start the 7.5 km ride to the school, passing lots of Cambodians who yell out "helloooooo whatisyourname?" (Exactly like I've written it!) 8am - Arrive at school. Park our bikes and start the labour. At the moment ... read more

In advance, I apologise for the short entry... I have a headache and a stomach ache (uh-oh) and it is getting late, and I need to wake up early for tomorrow! This morning we went to Khobie Riel, the village where we will be working for the next five weeks. The beauty, combined with the poverty stricken lands is truly eye opening. The people here are just so beautiful, and everywhere you look, a smile is greeting you. When we reached the school where we will be working, we were introduced to the school staff & committee. Our translator, Khan, is a very funny man who I look forward to working with for these upcoming weeks. After discussing what our plan was, we walked to the Pergoda (temple). For such a poor village (no electricity), the ... read more
