Beautiful children!
At the school, as soon as you whip out a camera they are all the biggest posers! In advance, I apologise for the short entry... I have a headache and a stomach ache (uh-oh) and it is getting late, and I need to wake up early for tomorrow! This morning we went to Khobie Riel, the village where we will be working for the next five weeks. The beauty, combined with the poverty stricken lands is truly eye opening. The people here are just so beautiful, and everywhere you look, a smile is greeting you. When we reached the school where we will be working, we were introduced to the school staff & committee. Our translator, Khan, is a very funny man who I look forward to working with for these upcoming weeks. After discussing what our plan was, we walked to the Pergoda (temple). For such a poor village (no electricity), the temple was truly spectacular. The paintings are all about Buddha, and are all very informative and awe inspiring at the same time. Shortly after, we walked to Mr Siht's house who is the school principal. Here, we had a simple yet delicious meal of rice, bok choy, fish soup and fresh eggs. There were the CUTEST puppies there, and anyone who knows me properly, knows the
Wow.
The picture says it all! animal fanatic I am... I got about about a million photos of them! Jess and I played with Mr Siht's two children - Geralie and Vitor, who were very excited to have companionship... even if they did laugh at our attemps of broken Khmer. We then proceeded back to the village, where the hard work started. In all honesty, I thought building a brick fence was exactly as it sounds - putting bricks on top of one another... boy was I wrong! Before we can begin the fence, we needed to plot steel wire (that is thicker than a finger) in the shape of the fence. The steel was bent out of shape, so Colleen and Jess worked to get it straight, while Sophie and I cut it. Today, I discovered that I have the knack for cutting wire with giant pliers... it was VERY hard at first!! Amy started to mould smaller wire into triangles... I have no idea what they are for, and we need 1500 of them! After three hours of work, we were all knackered. Knowing that tomorrow is double that of today, makes me cringe! As soon as we got back to Earthwalkers, we had
The Pergoda
The team (minus Amy) with Kahn outside the local temple. a quick swim and then showered to go out for dinner. Tonight we went to a delicious restaraunt called "le tigre de papier". Amy and I shared a margarhita pizza that was cooked in a wood fire oven, and only had to pay $2.60 each for half a pizza! We then made a quick pit stop at the Blue Pumpkin to get a macaroon, then continued on to the handicraft fair. This is a really amazing fair, where there are about 50 stalls of just hand made items! The lucky people that received a gift tonight are Grandma, Bronte and Jamie! Now we are all at home, and utterly exhausted. I really am sorry this entry is so brief and rushed, I will try to put up photographs to make it easier to understand! Missing you all xxx
