We arrived late at Mango & as only the bunks in our 3 bed dorm were free & Dawn bagsied the bottom I had to clamber up to the top to sleep & I mean clamber as there were no ladders! Our first morning didn’t exactly start well as the other girl in our room had set her alarm early but then kept hitting snooze so it ended up going off 4 or 5 times before she eventually got noisily out of bed & changed. After that the day improved with a walk along the beach & a warm paddle in the sea. Unlike Manly Beach this one was almost empty for most of the length we walked. That afternoon we decided to go whale watching as we’d ummmed over it in Sydney & apparently there ... read more

(Bit belated as we've been to Hervey Bay, Fraser Island & Brisbane since but never mind!) On last note on Adelaide - pink spaghetti!!! (Beetroot). Made for an interesting lunch.... Sydney Harbour YHA is the best budget place to stay! Clean, small rooms (ours was ensuite), interesting build over an archeological dig that you can see on the ground floor & amazing views from the roof terrace of the Opera House & Harbour Bridge. One night there were fireworks by the Opera House & we must have had one of the best views in the city! Our first day we wandered around - up onto the bridge, back through the Rocks, Circular Quay, past the Opera House, through the Botanical Gardens where we saw grey-headed flying foxes & sat around for a bit before heading over ... read more

So.... Stupidly early on Thursday morning we were picked up from our hostel by Tony (who looks like your steroetypical Aussie surfer bloke!) together with 11 other explorers & we headed off to Cape Jervis to catch the ferry over to KI. Once over there we stopped briefly for supplies (chocolate & ginger beer) before heading to Pennington bay for a brief walk on the beach & a scramble up the rocks. Some even got their feet wet, albeit accidentally! This was the beach Flinders landed on thinking it was mainlamd Australia & the Island is named after the creature that saved his crew from starvation! We next climbed up Prospect Hill (where Flinders found out he wasn't on the mainland) - over 500 steps to the top, there were a lot of red faces at ... read more

Monday: We went to Melbourne Zoo! We also had supper at Lentil As Anything - a small place that does tasty veggie curries & you can pay whatever you think the food is worth! Tuesday: We headed out to the Dandenongs & had a ride on Puffing Billy - an old steam train that goes through these scenic mountains. We hung our legs over the side & got rather cold! It was a good way to see the area, especially since the weather wasn't that great. We also saw & heard our first kookaburra! Wednesday: Up stupidly early to fly to Adelaide. After checking into the hostel - no free wifi :( - we set off to the Adelaide Hills. To Mt Lofty to be exact. We got the bus to the centre at the summit, ... read more

Well after around 24 hours in transit (including waiting around at airports) we are settling into hostel #1... Currently sittting on comfy sofa with a nice cuppa tea & an open fire. Oh & a kitty that owns the place stalking around! I could get used to this.... Long haul flights are not fun in spite of the good selection of films & tv we were amazed our legs still functioned properly when we arrived in Melbourne! Although Emerites have cool LED stars in their ceiling!!!!! Off to try to nap for a little bit prior to exploring St Kilda :) Free wi-fi here so if anyone wants to chat let us know as I have skype set up! (this includes Dawn's friends/family too!!!)... read more
