So Tuesday 19th, the Stray bus was late picking me up from Parnell even though I was the first pick up! I later realised this was just how Seagull (our driver) worked! We drove around Auckland for quite some time picking people up from lots of hostels then headed up to Mount Eden - in the bus which was good as it was raining by then! After a quick stop at Stray HQ to have the online booking system explained we left Auckland & hedaed over to the Coromandel Peninsular. The hills there were beautiful to drive over. We stopped off a few times to shop or admire the views & to hug the twin Kauri trees that are meant to bring good luck &health! We stayed at a campsite hostel in Hahei & most of ... read more

So on Tuesday we left Tongariro Nation Park on Trouble's bus (all the drivers have Stray names!) & had a loooong drive down to Wellington only stopping for food and loo stops. It was still mid afternoon by the time we checked into our hostel (Base Wellington - the worst we've stayed in so far!) but myself & Debby decided to join Cora, Sandra & Justin in visiting the botanical gardens. After a slight detour we found the cabelcar station which took us up the hill to the botanical gardens before walking back down through them to the city. We treated ourself to cheap pizza from Dominos for supper & had enough left over for lunch on Wednesday. After a couple of drinks in the BASEment Bar we headed to bed just as the music started ... read more

Since I got on the stray bus last Tuesday it's been all go! I haven't got any photos for you yet & I will try at some point to put together a more detailed account of my travels. But here they are in brief... Tuesday: left Auckland in the morning after a quick trip up Mt Eden & drove over to the Coromandel Peninsula stopping briefly in Thames before arriving at Hahei where we went sea kayaking :D Wednesday we drove over to the west coast to Raglan where some went surfing but not I, I went for a nice stroll up a steep hill instead! Thursday we headed down to the Waitomo caves where I went on an caving trip that involved abseiling, climbing, squeezing through holes & getting drenched by the underground waterways! That ... read more

Tiritiri Matangi (literally "tossed by the wind" in Maori) is an open island reserve (ie allows public access) where many rare New Zealand bird thrive. Tiri was originally home to a couple of Maori triebs the Kawerau-A-Maki & later the Ngati Paoa. During the mid 1850s European settlers arrived and since then the island was continually farmed until the 1970s. An army of volunteers have helped replant native species and create a series of footpaths allowing visitors to explore the island with minimal impact on the wildlife. It's also home to several researchers including one I met whilst ringing waders earlier this summer. She kindly invited me to join her as she showed an artist around the island which meant I got a brilliant tour of the place, a lot of it off the public paths, ... read more

This site gives me no access to the stats to see if anyone is actually reading this besides the email subscribers (who I also have no way of knowing! lol)... So I just wondered who is actually following my blog here? I promise the next post will be more interesting! I have to tell you all about the lovely Tiritiri Matangi island & the wonderful wildlife I saw there! (I can tick 2 I really wanted to see off my list!)... read more

So I left Australia & landed in New Zealand. So far I've been mostly lazing around in Auckland! I got to my hostel & met up with Jamie that first Saturday afternoon. We had a nice time catching up over tea & cake, then cider/beer & finally supper. Together with some wandering around the centre. Sunday morning I first got moved from one share room to another (amusing as I actually had a dorm bed booked!) then had a chat with my parents (having had a lovely long chat with Mark the night before) & finally met up with Jamie in town. Since it was a nice day we walked along the coast to Mission Bay where we had lunch followed by an ice-cream on the beach :) Back home for another chat with Mark before ... read more

Leaving Australia was more stressful than I thought.... Firstly I got to bed a little late due to the fact I got chatting to guys over supper & then had to pack & use up the internet time I'd paid for! Then my alarm failed to go off at 4am - I looked at my watch & saw it was 04:15 & my taxi was due at 04:25... Argh! Up, dressed, last minute stuff into the bag, hostel sheets & card dumped in respective boxes & outside by 04:26. No taxi... 7 minutes later still no taxi... I need the hostel card (which I'd handed in) to get back in to use the free taxi phone to order another... luckily a minute or two later a taxi showed up (the driver didn't have good english so ... read more

So Wednesday we left Brisbane & the sun to return to Melbourne & the winter cold & rain... Flew into Avalon airport as was cheaper flights - won't try that again, it's miles from the city!!! Got bus to town & paid the extra to be dropped off at the hostel as it was getting late. Stayed in North Melbourne this time at YHA hostel. Nice place, bit old & drab but two decent kitchen & twin rooms!!! This last was brilliant! Especially after the chaos of Brisbane hostel! lol. That first night we found out from reception where we could find food then set off in search of it. & it started to rain, heavily. So first pub we find with food we duck inside to find a table. & there's a pub quiz going ... read more

So we left Herevy Bay & flew to Brisbane on the Sunday, got the train into town & checked into the hostel. V crowded & not enough room or anything! Anyway we were tired & hungry so headed up the road to the next hostel to find food (there was a bar there) - but there was no veggie food on the menu so we asked the dude at the foody bit if he could do us a baked potato with cheese (potato with chicken curry was on the menu) & oh my did he manage that! It had cheese sauce & mozarella & a cheesey salad & the most grarlic buttery crouton I've ever had! Nom!!! Monday was a lazy start then off for a free walking tour of the city with Alex. Was fairly ... read more

Whew, where to start! Pick up & ferry over were uneventful but we did see a stingray from the ferry as we pulled in & we were met on the Island by Ranger Pete & all jumped into the 4WD coach(!). More people (22) than KI which I wasn’t sure about but it wasn’t too bad with that many. The Ferry had taken us to Kingfisher Bay Resort (where we were also staying that night) but we soon left the tarmaced roads of the resort for the sandy tracks of the island. Our first stop ws Basin Lake - Fraser Island has many of these freshwater lakes that source their water from rainfall - here some of the group went swimming, some walked around the small lake & we paddled then chatted & Pete showed me ... read more
