Europe » Portugal » Lisbon & Tagus Valley » Lisbon May 29th 2017

Up early to drop off our home exchange vehicle, which had a scheduled appointment, before arriving at the train station by a car service. We enjoyed a coffee before boarding the train for our 3 1/2 hour trip to Lisbon. Upon our arrival at the Lisbon train station we then wandered up fairly steep cobbled stone streets to our VRBO apartment. Our apartment was on the second floor and had a great view of the famous tram 28 that passes directly below it. The building actually rattles as the tram rumbles by! It is a nice apartment with patio area and we are right in the heart of the historical area of Alfama. After unloading our stuff we headed out to have some lunch. Once lunch was over we were off to the metro station as ... read more

Today is our last day in our lovely home in Manta Rota. We could not have asked for a nicer home or location. It is a quiet area right now as many people only come for the high season of July and August. We noticed a lot of the homes were still closed up for the season and so were some restaurants. We picked the right time to visit as the weather was lovely and no line ups to attractions. We headed back to Vila Real de Santo Antonio for coffee and pastries at the first coffee shop we visited in Portugal. It served great coffee and amazing fresh pastries and a nice atmospher. After coffee we did one more wander through the village before heading home. We all spent the afternoon relaxing by the pool ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Algarve » Castro Marim May 27th 2017

Today our coffee destination is the village Castro Marim which is in a valley between two castles. We enjoyed coffee and a sandwich in a pretty square below a 13th century castle. The historic castle had a wonderful medieval atmosphere to it as you wandered through the grounds. It also offered great panoramic views of the area. From there we crossed through the village to the castle on the other side of the valley. We could not enter this castle, but did walk along its outside walls.... read more

You will now finds us at www.mytb.org/Dospalmas Today we visited the traditional Portugués town of Silves. Overlooking the town is a huge red brick castle with impregnable city walls and defensive gates. During the Moorish era Silves was a major trading location and this strategic importance was bitterly defended with the construction of the mighty castle and the solid city walls. We arrived in time for lunch so enjoyed pizzas at a lovely restaurant in the village. We then toured the old castle and its great panoramic views. We even watched a belly dancing performance and some falconers and their falcon. From there we wandered back through the village where we noticed many stork ... read more

Geo: 37.4387, -6.03841Today we went on a road trip to Spain to visit Itálica, the ruins of a Roman city with a remarkable amphitheater and amazing mosaics. It was a two hour drive, but well worth it. Italica was the birthplace of three emperors and one of the earliest Roman settlements in Spain, founded in 206 BC. It rose to considerable military importance in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. Throughout the Middle Ages, the ruins were used as a source of stone for Seville, but fortunately the amphitheatre has survived, although much of it lies in ruin. With walls eroded by time and steps that have almost completely disappeared, the sheer scale of Italica's amphitheatre instantly gave us insight into how spectators (and gladiators) must have felt when seeing it for the first time. It ... read more

Geo: 37.6389, -7.66216Today we headed north into the hills of southern Portugal. Our first destination is the small riverside village of Alcoutim. Here there are the remains of a 14th century castle which overlooks Alcoutim and the Guadiana River. Across the river on the Spanish side of the river lies another castle overlooking the Spanish village of Sao Lucas do Guadiana. These are visible reminders of the times when Portugal and the Castile were at war with each other. We enjoyed a coffee and a few custard tarts before venturing to the medieval castle. We walked along the castle walls and then visited a museum inside the castle walls. The museum had displays showing the historical path of the city from its inception over 500 years ago. There was also an exhibition of Islamic board games and ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Algarve » Lagos May 22nd 2017

Geo: 37.1019, -8.67324Today we headed to the southwest corner of Portugal. We took the fast toll highway. Along the way we stopped at Alcantilha to see a unique church whose interior is lined with human bones. The bones and skulls that can be seen are those of over 1200 Carmelite monks that were exumed from the nearby church cemetery when the ossuary was built in 1816. The alleged purpose of this Chapels of Bones is to emphasize the brevity of human existence and the need to live a good life to avoid the eternity of hell. A more likely purpose may have been to free up space in the cemeteries! We continued on to Lagos, from which we will kayak along the Ponta da Piedade. The Ponta da Piedade is a group of rock formations along the ... read more

Geo: 37.1258, -7.64984After a late breakfast we headed west to visit the town of Tavira. It had lovely cobblestone streets, ornate churches, Portuguese architecture and also a castle. Before visiting the castle we stopped for coffee and a waffle. It is a tourist town with lots of cafes and restaurants, but it is still charming. After viewing the castle we explored narrow streets and found a wonderful place for a late lunch. We all enjoyed some traditional Portuguese meals, including grilled squid, razor clams served in two ways, and seafood soup.Once we were back on the road we made one more stop at a small village called Cacela Velha. Cacela Velha is situated on a hill with a view of a lagoon and the ocean beyond. We had a quick wander through before heading home. Our ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Seville May 21st 2017

Geo: 37.3833, -5.9965Today we are heading back to Spain to visit the historic city of Seville. After returning our rental car we continued into the centre area of Seville in our eight seater van. We avoided underground parking with our huge beast of a vehicle, but did find parking. We quickly found a coffee spot and Jim rushed down the street for fresh baked churros to enjoy with our coffee. We then made our way to the Alcazar, which was formerly a Moorish fortress. It is the oldest European royal palace still in use. The palace has been greatly transformed since its inception as a Roman Fort. A long history of alterations, expansions and renovations has created a defining mixture of styles, the dominant of which is the Moorish architecture. The large complex is quite spectacular. ... read more

Geo: 37.195, -7.41766After a good sleep we headed off to the lovely village of Vila Real de Santo Antonio. Vila Real de Santo Antonio is situated on the Guadiana River which divides Portugal and Spain. We walked through the village till we found a nice coffee spot that sold yummy pastries. Always nice to find a good coffee spot to start our day. We then checked out a small farmers market which was held in the large town square that is lined with orange trees. We walked through the town admiring some of the tiled homes and finished our tour along the marina promenade. The village has a nice selection of interesting statues situated around the town. We stopped and picked up some fresh seafood for our dinner tonight. Then we spent the rest of our ... read more
