Today we are off to visit a couple who were acquaintances of ours in Costa Rica and who now live in Altea. They were originally from Calgary and two years ago the left Atenas to live in Spain. We had a leisurely coffee with them at a beachfront cafe and made plans to meet again later in the week for dinner. In the afternoon we spent time in the pool and reading. Our acquaintance Barry mentioned that on Sunday nights at a train station near here people gather for a jam session with different instruments and it usually has some pretty good music. We decided to check it out as Barry said he'd be there playing his saxophone. The music was pretty decent.... read more

Today is another hot one but we are determined to do a hike out to a lighthouse outside of Albir. It is 2.2k each way, so we head out early (for us) to try to beat some of the heat! It is a nice hike high on a paved path on cliffs above the Mediterranean. Once arriving at the lighthouse we enjoyed looking down on groups of bottlenosed dolphins splashing in the Mediterranean. So fun to watch. We also came across a mother red legged partridge and her 13 little hatchlings. We enjoyed our walk back to our vehicle and then headed for home. We spent the afternoon in and out of the pool. After dinner when the sun was setting we visited the beach and enjoyed a walk along the promenade.... read more

Today was hot, right from the time we woke up. The house does not have great ventilation and no screens on the windows! Europeans do not seem to believe in putting screens on their windows which is strange as there are flies and mosquitoes here. After breakfast we headed off to a small village not far from where we are staying, called Altea. The old town of Altea is on a hill and looks typically Spanish with its pretty, narrow cobbled streets with white houses leading up to a beautiful central square. Once we climbed up through the narrow streets we enjoyed magnificent sea and mountain views. We enjoyed the charm of the little village as we sipped our morning coffee but the heat of the day quickly sent us back home to enjoy our pool. ... read more

After a lazy start to our day we headed to the neighbouring village of Alfaz del Pi. We parked our car and headed off walking through the town. We had our morning coffee at a little cafe, but there was nothing of interest in the town so we left. Returning to Albir, we went to an open air museum built on the site of an old Roman villa. We rented an iPad type device from the caretaker which, when you pointed it at the existing remains it showed a image of what the original villa and associated Roman baths in all their glory. It was quite interesting but the heat of the day 39c sent us home to our pool for the rest of the day.... read more

Today we are celebrating 37 wonderful years of marriage. Unfortunately, we had to start our day by returning our rental car to Alicante which is over an hour away. We decided to drive the rental and our exchange vehicle to the little train station in Albir. From there we drove to Alicante where we returned our vehicle and had a coffee and yummy pastries. Then we caught the local tram back to Albir which was a great way to see the countryside. On our return to Albir train station we picked up our car and drove into Albir and visited beautiful Playa Albir. It was busy with tourists but we bought a gelato and enjoyed a lovely stroll along the beach promenade. It is 37c today so returned to the house and cooled off in the ... read more

We packed up our rental car and headed into the "newer" town of Cuenca. For breakfast we went to a funky little pastry shop on the Main Street. This place, very popular with the locals, is right out of the 1960's, with waiters who wear formal white jackets and black bow ties. We head out on the highway for the 5 hour drive to the Costa Blanca, in SE Spain. Along the way, we spot a castle on a dramatic hilltop, in Almansa, and stop for lunch. The castle is closed for repairs, but lunch is good. Eventually we reach the location of our final home exchange, El Albir. Our new home is located on a hill above the town. Albir has a Mediterranean climate which means hot summers with mild winters and very little rain. ... read more

After a quick breakfast at a little coffee shop we gathered up our suitcases and headed downhill to the parkade. Once on the road and heading east we stopped in the town of Aranjuez for a coffee and to view the palace grounds before continuing onto Cuenca. Aranjuez is a name of a song Jim plays on his guita, so we wanted to see it. We passed through grain fields and vineyards and forests on our route. The city of Cuenca started as a fortified settlement on a steep bluff between two river canyons. Our little hotel was in the old town, high on the bluff. We checked in and then went to a very nice restaurant for lunch. In the evening we headed out to see the principal sights, the Hanging Houses and the old ... read more

Up early and off to Madrid to return our home exchange partners' vehicle and pick up a rental car. Even with gps it was a bit trying getting around and out of Madrid. Once out of the city we enjoyed a one hour drive south to Toledo. Our boutique hotel was located in the old city on one of the narrow winding streets, so we parked in a local parkade. The parkade was a ten minute walk uphill on narrow cobblestone streets in 38c heat!! We were very happy to get into our air conditioned one bedroom apartment. After a short rest, we went out and wandered the maze of narrow streets. It is easy (and fun) to get lost here. By arriving later in the day, we seemed to miss most of the big tour ... read more

After an enjoyable sleep-in we were off to Manzanares de Real to see a 15th century castle in the Elizabethan Gothic-style. The castle was initially conceived as a fortress but quickly became a residential palace. On arrival to the town we noticed there was a huge medieval fair going on. It was enjoyable to wander through the decorated streets with a large variety of vending stalls. We enjoyed a coffee with churros dipped in hot chocolate sauce before heading off to tour the castle. The castle was very impressive from the outside as it has been substantially restored both inside and out. Once inside we enjoyed wandering through different rooms, galleries with tapestries, and viewing paintings and other artworks. We especially liked visiting the ramparts and turrets where we enjoyed great views of the mountains and ... read more

This morning after a leisurely breakfast we headed into San Lorenzo for Jim's hair appointment and then coffee. After that we took a drive and short hike to see La Silla de Felipe II (the kings seat). It is believed to be the spot where Felipe II rode in a carriage to overview the construction of his amazing palace and monastery. If true, it was neat to sit in the stone chair where a king in the 1500's once sat. The view of the monastery, surrounding mountains, forest and town were very lovely from this location. We then drove into the town of El Escorial for a light lunch of crepes before returning home. We spent the rest of the day relaxing on the patio beside the pool.... read more
