Asia » Hong Kong » Lantau Island November 12th 2013

Sometime in October we had an e-mail from our friend Dave in the UK who had managed to co-ordinate his holiday time with one of our trips to Hong Kong in mid-November. Unfortunately, we would only have one day and one night before Dave and his friend, Rob were due to fly to Cambodia so we jumped at the chance to meet up. As regular visitors to Hong Kong we were racking our brains for a new thing we could do while we were on this visit. We have already been up Victoria Peak more times than we’d like to admit and we knew that Dave and Rob wouldn’t want to shop all day . So we decided on an action plan - visit the Big Buddha on Lantau island, afternoon cocktails and then a nice ... read more

Bangkok…the first Asian city we ever visited and the gateway to a country which partially inspired our travelling and the life we now lead. We have been to Bangkok so many times, it feels a little bit like home every time we go there. We are a little late publishing this blog, but better late than never! While we were browsing online looking for hotels in Bangkok, we noticed a well-known booking site which did mystery deals. Basically, you get a hint as to the location and facilities of the hotel but not the name. It’s a risk to book but being the Google fiends we are, we managed to narrow it down to two possible hotels. We took the plunge and for a princely 1500 baht (or £31) a night, we had booked the 4* ... read more

We were thankful that our tummies had calmed down from the roller coasters by the time we were checking in for our flight to Bangkok. We are slightly surprised that Hong Kong airport doesn’t have the self-check in machines other airports have, but Air Asia have actually invested in staff numbers here, so there is several check in desks available for all flight destinations open! The flight went very smoothly, arrival into Don Mueang still reminds us of the first time we went to Thailand, except without the scrum of taxi mafia waiting at the arrival doors! It’s a little disappointing that Don Mueang has been the Air Asia hub for 9 months now and there doesn’t seem to have been any real improvement to what is offered at the airport. For example, despite asking in ... read more

Hong Kong has almost become a second home to us, we know the city so well and visit so often, on our last visit, Neil had the idea of doing something different to what we normally do! Being the big kids we are, we decided to pay Ocean Park a visit. Not just an ordinary theme park, it opened in 1977 and has since grown to 35 attractions and rides – there is the amusement park part of Ocean Park as well as an oceanarium, marine mammal park and animal attractions, along with observatories, laboratories, education department and a whales and dolphins fund. Apparently, the park has won several awards, including the world’s 7th most popular amusement park and Forbes’ 33rd most visited tourist attraction in the world! Getting There We really couldn’t have chosen a ... read more

One thing we had been looking forward to was a day trip to Ang Thong National park. We had planned to do it last year when we were on Koh Samui but after Paul's motorbike accident it wasn't to be. After researching a bit, we decided to book a speedboat tour to the national park (1600 baht each inc lunch and snorkelling equipment), after the boat ride to Koh Phangan we didn’t fancy the slower boat! Ang Thong literally translates as "golden bowl" and is a protected national park with over 40 islands. All of the islands are uninhabited and undeveloped except for two of them (one has sea gypsies living on it and the other is the national park headquarters).Everything went very smoothly, our pick up was even early! We sat on the back of ... read more

As soon as Donna’s parents saw the beach on Koh Phangan on a ‘Skype-walk-and-talk’ last July (isn’t modern technology wonderful?), the decision was made about where we would be taking them on holiday. Everything was booked by mid-January and we started to get daily countdowns by e-mail from them, which were remarkably accurate, even down to the minute! This is the first of two blogs of our time with them. We had managed to book flights to arrive within an hour of each other into Bangkok and we arrived first, giving us time to sort out the sim card for our phone and scoff a black forest cornetto - have we ever mentioned how good the cornettos in Thailand are? We were very excited to see Jan and Paul and we started the holiday in luxury, ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Lipe December 25th 2012

This is quite a long blog, so it might be an idea to settle in with a nice cup of tea and a biscuit! We started this trip with a 12 hour wait in between our flight arriving into Suvarnabhumi airport and our next departing from Don Muang airport…plenty of time to head into the city and get a Thai meal before hopping in a taxi to Don Muang to wait for our onward flight to the far south of Thailand. The journey to the island Arriving into Hat Yai airport, it wasn’t immediately clear what our transport options onwards were…there were some guys there selling onward minibus and boat tickets for 1000 baht and it seemed a little overpriced, we opted for the minibus to the bus station at 100 baht ... read more

Spending the night in Bangkok airport was just what we needed after 3 hectic days of shopping in Hong Kong, it wasn’t too bad apart from it being freezing cold because the air con was set too high. We actually envied the Thais who were hanging around the airport because they had come prepared with hats and blankets (no joke!) - all we had were thin sarongs and spicy pot noodles to keep us warm. Our Air Asia flight was on time and we actually got seats together when the computer system usually separates us, the strange thing was on our flight from Hong Kong we also got seats together – we weren’t complaining! Once on the ground we headed out and booked a bus and fast boat combo to the island. Our destination this time, ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Boracay April 21st 2012

This time we aren’t starting our blog with a flight nightmare but an airport nightmare…seriously, what is wrong with our luck at the moment? We took advantage of some cheap flights but unfortunately those cheap flights were from Clark airport, 3 hours north of Manila. We will warn you now that this is a rather long blog and is a little bit ranty. Getting to Boracay... Clark airport is so bad, we really don’t know where to start! We were very thankful we weren’t flying internationally as the queue for Immigration was huge (there were only 2 officers on duty for 3 departing flights, it took some people an hour and a half to clear Immigration!) and then we had the complete farce of the security check. You know how you give some people a uniform ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Surat Thani March 20th 2012

Just a note before this short blog starts properly…after leaving the UK 2041 days ago, we have reached a milestone 100th blog and almost 90,000 hits! Talking to the travel agents on Koh Samui about onward transport to Surat Thani was frustrating. According to them, there were only a couple of ferries a day and although pick up from any Samui hotel was included on these annoying transport packages, it was a full 3 hours before the ferry departed! So for a 3pm ferry this meant we would be collected at midday…completely ridiculous seeings though we were only a 15 minute drive from the ferry port. We then decided to start questioning the travel agents about ‘going-it-alone’, by the looks on their faces when we asked, it was as if we were about to embark on ... read more
