Sorry there has been a bit of a gap between the last blog and this one…we have been too busy lying and basking on a paradise tropical beach and booking flights to our next paradise tropical beach - jealous? Anyhoo, instead of getting up at the crack of dawn and getting a Rapid Penang bus to the bus station and then onto a big bus we decided getting up at the crack of dawn and being picked up from our guesthouse with a smaller minibus was the better option for the (supposed) 4 hours journey to the Cameron Highlands. Of course our 7:30am pick-up was late and we were the last ones on the bus…we swear with this minibus journey we really had to bite our tongues with our fellow travellers. They were so damn rude! ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Penang » Batu Ferringhi May 10th 2010

First of all, sorry for showing our geeky sci-finess by doing a Star Trek title for the blog, we just couldn’t resist it! It was only a short (air conned!) bus ride to Batu Ferringhi, a beach resort town on the north coast of Penang. Because of the heat Neil had insisted that his Cadbury’s chocolate be packed very carefully into our backpacks, to provide the most protection from melting in the heat! We managed to find the right place to get off the bus and walked away from the big resort hotels down a side street which lead to the beach and the budget accommodation; although the word ‘budget’ to describe the rooms is definitely not the one we would use! Cue a hot and sweaty hour or so walking around the few guesthouses asking ... read more

Giggling away to ourselves in Hong Kong airport’s departure lounge because the Air Asia staff were insisting to Neil (at 9pm) that our 9:05pm flight was on time and the plane hadn’t even arrived yet…well this is Asia! We weren’t too bothered because we had decided to sleep overnight in KL’s Cheap Charlie terminal until the first connecting flight to Penang, even though the last time we did this we vowed never, ever again - but the prospect of saving a night’s accommodation was too tempting, so all common sense (and memories of the eye dropping tiredness) went out the window! The wait wasn’t actually too bad as we had dosed ourselves on the refillable McDonalds coffee at 5am and our flight to Penang was only a quarter full (how do they make money on these ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Terengganu » Perhentian Kecil September 8th 2009

Let us get one thing off our chest straight away, Perhentian Kecil has the worst value accommodation in our 3 years of travelling and the most expensive internet but conversely it had some of the best snorkelling we have done and some of the best beaches/cleanest water we have seen. Our flight from Hong Kong got us to Kuala Lumpur’s Cheap Charlie Terminal at around midnight and our flight to Kota Bharu was at 7:30am so we roughed it and spent the night at the airport. We didn’t really get much sleep as the only seats available (it seems everyone and his wife had the same idea as us!) were some right next to a TV which blared out prayers at the Hajj full blast on repeat for 6 hours! Arriving into Kota Bharu we were ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary August 12th 2009

A side note for those wondering about the blog title...as Sandakan is where we flew into, we just couldn’t resist a reference to the Clint Eastwood films from the ‘80’s featuring Clyde the Orang-utan...and yes it does show our age! So we were up and at ‘em at 5am so we could get another extortionate taxi to Kota Kinabalu airport...we decided on the 45 minute flight versus the 6 hour bus journey as it ended up being the same price. Well that and because we had heard the road was very winding so with Donna’s tendency to get travel sick we really didn’t particularly fancy that journey! On the approach to Sandakan we saw why the bus would be a bad idea - it was mostly mountains, although it seemed to us that a lot of ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Kota Kinabalu August 8th 2009

Our arrival into Borneo didn’t go exactly as we had planned...our flight was delayed because the incoming flight was late in arriving (yep, that’s usually how it works isn’t it?!) but we didn’t have to worry because we had booked into a hostel in Kota Kinabalu which offered an airport pick up...or so we thought! The airport pick up didn’t arrive though and after an hour of waiting and talking to a girl at the hostel with the quietest voice on the quietest telephone line ever and drawing a complete blank, we got a taxi into town. Our first observation about Borneo is that the taxi’s are bloody expensive...it was 30 ringgit for the 7km journey (that’s just over £5, so by Asian standards it’s expensive!). After a bit of a heated discussion at the hostel ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Surigao » Siargao July 30th 2009

Our day started off well in Cebu city with our Maccie D’s breakfast and hot chocolate - we have thoroughly learnt our lesson about drinking coffee on travel days - it makes us need the toilet constantly!! It then turned a little bit hectic as we scrambled to find a taxi to take us to the airport who would actually turn on the metre and then when we were at the airport none of the cash machines were working for us to get a bit of ‘safety money’ out! After a mad dash and looking hot, bothered and slightly sweaty we managed to check in for our flight and had the undignified honour of being weighed along with our hand luggage so they could put the right amount of fuel on the propeller plane! This blog is rather late, seeing as we have been back in Asia for a month...but better late than never! So the time had come to switch to the other side of the UK to go to Neil’s parents in the North East which involved a nice drive over the Pennines and North Yorkshire moors; it also included a stop for lunch in a typically British country town, Kirkby Stephen. The thing that struck us the most about the drive was the diversity of the landscape - hills, mountains, fields and the unique hedgerows which don’t seem to make an appearance in any other country, except maybe in New Zealand. Yes, things continued to amaze us about the UK which we never really noticed when we lived there - how civilised (no matter what our parents ... read more

Our flights to the UK had been booked since November 2008, for our very brief visit to the UK to attend Neil’s big brother’s wedding (congratulations Darren and Vicki!). As we hadn’t been back to our home country for 2 years and 7 months we would undoubtedly find it a very interesting and possibly strange experience - so the next couple of blogs are about our experiences in the UK. Before heading to the UK we decided on some beach time in Malaysia and spent a fantastic 5 days lazing before our long flight back to the UK, the longest we had done in quite some time. The budget terminal - LCCT - or as we like to call it Cheap Charlie Terminal is impressive; we were last there in January 2008 and the changes are ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Palawan » Sabang March 4th 2009

It was that time of the year again - Donna’s birthday and she chose Sabang in Palawan as the place she would like to be to celebrate. So we got a flight to Puerto Princesa and decided to make it the same day to Sabang...problem is that the flights land at 9:30am and the jeepney doesn’t leave until 12noon (well sometime after, it depends on how the driver is feeling!) so cue Donna and Neil hanging around for a jeepney to leave for 3 hours! Our time in Sabang didn’t start so well with the jeepney ride as the jeepney helper was overcharging the foreigners by 50 pesos each...eventhough we argued it and could see the locals paying 150 pesos he wouldn’t back down. This is one of those times we just had to give in ... read more
