Geo: 58.9644, 5.72626Stavenger is a small, charming waterfront city with cobblestone streets and shiplap cottages. This morning we had a tour of the surrounding areas and a quick walk through the old town, A southern port of Norway, Stavanger is home to one of Europe's most interesting Old Towns. The cobbled streets of Gayle Stavanger, as it is called, are lined with the continent's highest concentration of wooden buildings that date to the 17th and 18th centuries. Close to 250 are here, protected by a conservancy formed in the 1950s after developers threatened to destroy these cultural riches. Many of Stavanger's other riches come from the petroleum industry. Offshore drilling feeds the economy here, making the city one of the most expensive in the world. The coastal city's seafood is also bountiful. White is a popular ... read more

Geo: 60.4675, 7.07192Today we arrived in the quaint village of Eidfjord nestled in the heart of one of Norway's most scenic regions. From the Norwegian Sea, the waters of the expansive Hardangerfjord lead to the smaller Eidfjorden and to this charming mountain hamlet. We visited a nature center and viewed a IMAX type movie about Norway. Vast, rugged beauty. We have had beautiful sunny days. They say that is unusual. It rains a lot; but, so far, we have enjoyed sunny and cool days. Fantastic Broadway type show tonight, The ship sets sail for Stavanger so we will be sailing all night and have an early morning excursion.... read more

Geo: 60.4013, 5.30998Nestled between gargantuan snow-capped mountains, magnificent fjords and one of Europe's largest glaciers, picturesque Bergen is an ancient city with deep Viking roots. Founded in 1070 on what was a Viking settlement, Bergen is the second-largest city in Norway; for many centuries, it was the country's capital and in the Hanseatic League, a merchant powerhouse with ports throughout the Baltic. It's most iconic landmark is the gathering of quaint, historic wooden buildings of the UNESCO-listed Bryggen wharf. Today we had a short two hour panoramic tour of this historic city. We left the bus when it was ready to return to the ship and spent the day wandering around the wharf area on our own. We rode up to the top of Mount Floyen on Bergen's popular funicular. It climbs 1,000 ft in seven ... read more

Geo: 51.0451, -114.063Today was our last day. We left beautiful Lake Louise and headed to Calgary. Went back to Banff to ride the gondola....beautiful views and a tour of the city. After lunch we took a helicopter ride (our last stop before arriving in Calgary). It was my first ride in a helicopter and it was a little scary; but, with Bob as the co pilot, I felt safe. The views were astounding and I only got a little nervous going over the mountain. It's interesting to see how the landscape flattens as we leave the Rockies behind and head for Calgary. We are staying at Hotel Arts in downtown Calgary. Very interesting decor and nice room. After dinner, we walked to the Calgary tower, approximately 572 feet up. Views that look over the entire city. ... read more

Geo: 51.4262, -116.178This morning we began a motorcoach tour of Yoho National Park. We began at the Front Range mountains driving through Banff National Park and then to Yoho (which means totally amazing) National Park. Our first stop was the Spiral tunnels. These train tracks soften the steep grade for trains coming across the Divide. Because each tunnel makes a complete spiraling turn, trains actually cross over themselves. We happened to arrive as a long train was going through the three tunnels simultaneously. You could see the engine emerge from the upper portal while 15 meters elbow it, the last cars are still entering the lower portal. The trains did not always have the benefit of this gentle, winding grade up to the pass. From 1885 until the Spiral Tunnels opened in 1909, steam engines inched ... read more

Geo: 51.1752, -115.573This morning we begin our last day on the train. Throughout this region we see unique rock formations called Hoodoos that were formed after the last ice age. We passed the small town of Chase situated on Little Shuswap Lake. It was named after Whitfield Chase who came to the area in 1865. Although lured by gold, he turned to farming. Today Chase has a population of about 2400 and is a popular trout fishing and boating area. Salmon Arm, situated on the southwest arm of Shuswap Lake got its name from the days when spawning salmon were so abundant that you could pitchfork them out of the water. The Salmon Bay Nature Enhancement Reserve is home to over 150 species of birds and waterfowl. Sicamous is situated between Shuswap and Mara Lakes. Often ... read more

Geo: 50.6761, -120.338Our train adventure begins traversing through Fraser Valley along Fraser River eastbound from Vancover to Kamloops. Everything is green and lush. In this region local farms produce a variety of crops including berries, field vegetables, orchards, bulbs, hops, seedlings and Christmas trees. We traveled through the town of Hope situated in the Cascade Mountains at the start of Fraser Valley, made famous by the 1858 gold rush. It is the chain saw capital of BC. A Rambo movie was made here. It's said that many gold miners came with hope, most left with despair because there wasn't much gold here after all. We passed by First Nations people fishing for Salmon. First Nations people are similar to our Native American Indians. Our train is very plush and comfortable. The main seats are above with ... read more

Geo: 49.2886, -123.121Today we left beautiful Whistler for Vancover. The weather turned beautiful. Wish that it could have teen this pretty while we were here. Hopefully the good weather will follow us all the way to Calgary. We were dropped off at our hotel for tonight in Vancover. A big city. The hotel was packed with people and their suitcases. This is a busy place. I'm not sure what I expected while visiting this country. It feels so much like home. They look like us, talk like us and everything seems so natural. Canada is a very beautiful country, and more importantly, in July, it is cool. Once we were settled in, we walked a few blocks to Vancover Outlook. The adventure starts with a 40 second elevator ride up 543.16 ft to a panoramic observation ... read more

Geo: 50.1183, -122.954Today we took the Gondola up to Mt. Whistler.  We walked through the upper village to the lower village, up and down many steps until we reached the first leg of the Gondola.  It was raining and cloudy.  We rode to the peak where we reached the summit house.  Enjoyed hot chocolate and admired the snow capped mountains.  Visibility was not good though; but, we made the best of it.  We then rode the Peak to Peak Gondola which is the longest suspension gondola in the world and covers 1.88 miles with no poles.  Amazing views even when it's cloudy.  We wanted to take the chair lift up to the top of Mt. Whistler but it was too cloudy and rainy.  We rode back to the summit house and down again.  We managed to ... read more
