Hello again! So our Oasis tour has begun! On Sunday, we met our group around 8:00 in the morning (after a delicious breakfast at the Silver Springs). We had an orientation meeting, payed our local payment - which covers our food along the way and a few other things, and loaded up "Fanny" our enormous yellow truck. There were about 12 of us who were just starting the journey in Nairobi, about 12 others have already been with Oasis and gone through Rwanda and Uganda. We drove FOREVER the first day! It was really great scenery...but an AWFUL drive. It was dusty, then it was rainy, it was really dirty basically. We got held up at the Tanzanian boarder briefly, so we got to our campsite at dark. So that was interesting, Brittney and I trying ... read more

Hello everyone! Mark - I loved your message...it made me a little emotional actually...but thank you so much for that! It made me feel really good. And yes! I'm impressed you got all the way through that without even one swear word! So... We've finished our volunteering. Yesterday after we were at Junction, we went back up to the office. We pretty much just played with the kids for about 4 hours. It was fun, but also really sad at the same time, knowing it was the last time we would ever see them... We took A TONNE of pictures though, and got the names of our little girls so we could sponsor them. Mine is Jane Mueni. Friday night we put a couple hours into packing. It was NOT easy! And I'm not looking forward ... read more

After junction on Tuesday, we came home and went back up to the office. The kids were all there and playing with the toys we had given them. We also met this girl, Lillian. She is 18 years old and is one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. I got talking to her, and she started explaining her story to me. She told me that in 2007, ... read more

Hello again everyone! So it was pointed out to me that my last blog entry didn't quite all make it onto the website. So I guess I will just start from where it left off... I was explaining that Mondays are used basically as a "drop" in day for anyone to come in and visit and talk with Kilonzi, Brittney and I. This Monday, Kilonzi organized a sort of business meeting. He had some of the ladies bring some jewelry that they make with them to the office to show Brittney and I. The idea is that we are hoping to be able to sell some of it back in Canada in the future. They make some really nice stuff! But the problem is, that nobody here has any money to buy any of it! So ... read more

Hello again everyone!! Before I begin, a few people have asked about sending materials here to the Lenana Slum Orphans and to the BJC (the school we have been to a couple of times). Kilonzi gave me this mailing address, and explained that if things are sent for the Orphans as well as to the school, if you make a note of what is to go where, he will deliver the items to the school. I would say the Lenana Slum Orphans and the school are both equally in need of supplies. The items they need the most are paper, pencils, pens, pencil sharpeners…(basically all types of school supplies). The Lenana Slum Orphans are also in pretty desperate need of clothing, and Kilonzi has said that he will divide up any clothing amongst the children who ... read more

Hello Again Everyone!! Thanks again for the comments!! They are hilarious!! Thanks for writing Joan! And I'm assuming Ms. Miller got the e-mail address from you, so thanks for sharing that with her!! Pete - I'm assuming you are 'canadianhiker@hotmail.com' and if you think we stand out in those pictures....you should see how much we stand out walking around... It's quite strange... oh and so far no killing and eating dinner all within a 1 hour span. Acutally most meals are vegetarian here! I fit in quite well (in that way....LOL). Thanks so much for writing Debbie and Michelle!! I'm so happy to hear that Alyssa enjoyed my East Side Marios tip...that one will serve her well!! Tell her I've got lots more up my sleeve, if she's interested! And Brodie will be thrilled to have ... read more

Hello again everyone!!! I LOVEEEEEE getting your comments! Thank you so much everyone!!! Brittney and I have discovered a great time saver for updating our blogs...we are going to pre-type our entrys at home while the computer is plugged in, and then we will come here to "Junction" to just copy and paste the entry in! Here's what I wrote earlier today... Hello again everyone! We have just about completed our first week as volunteers! On Tuesday we did our first home visit. It was about a 40 minute walk with Kilonzi. The lady we visited has 4 children of her own and has adopted 2 orphans now (one is her niece.) Her sister died about 2 months ago, and her 12 year old neice had no one else to take care of her. This woman ... read more

Hello again everyone! Thanks so much for the comments! I love reading them. (as you can imagine) things are quite different here and it is really nice to hear from home! I will start with Saturday - Saturday was wedding day! Pastor Margaret (our host mom)'s nephew was getting married. A Kenyan wedding is a VERY BIG DEAL! Brittney and I were so excited we were able to take part in the event. It is basically an all day event. The ENTIRE community attends! It was really cool...lots of singing and dancing! The church ceremony went until about 1:00 and then we all went to the reception. Everyone was fed and the speeches and gifts were next. There was more singing and dancing...and then MORE singing and dancing! It was great. Afterwards when we were walking ... read more
