As usual, it was at the last minute. This time, the last minute was when I remembered I might need an onward journey to present at the check-in desk - but this time, the last minute was too late. Too late to doctor the Word document I keep specifically for this purpose; to fool a check-in clerk that I had an outward journey from the country I was flying into. Now, I would have to take my chances. Thankfully the check-in clerk merely asks me if I have a visa, for which I produce my British passport which gets me fifteen days in Vietnam visa-free. Handy, having two passports. So I had gotten away with it again. Or so I thought. The immigration officer at Ho Chi Minh City's (HCMC) Tan Son Nhat International Airport did ... read more

It definitely wasn't the first time and I'm sure it won't be the last but I get the feeling that what I had just done is something that just can't keep happening for much longer. It's just always the way though; the biggest night of partying almost always occurs the night before a travel day with a ridiculously early start. My dorm mates and I were still enjoying a drunken swim in the resort pool just three hours before I was due to leave for Bangkok. Drunk, tired and spaced out, I waited for my taxi to the pier. Keeping in theme with my time in the islands, it was bucketing down. Thankfully it was a sheltered pick-up truck rather than a motorcycle that came to pick me up. I got some decent sleep on the ... read more

I said that I'd do nothing and that was exactly what I did. The intestinal infection I picked up in Myanmar ensured I wasn't able to do much anyway. I was only meant to stay in Kuala Lumpur for a month but ended up staying about five weeks thanks to the stubbornness and persistence of whatever I picked up. The resulting dietary restrictions in a food paradise such as Malaysia however is just torture, especially when staying with relatives who never let you go hungry and are enthusiastic about bringing you everything that's worth eating in this country. And for this outstanding hospitality, I really do have to give massive thanks to my Aunty Josephine and my Uncle Wooi Ping for looking after me. A break from travelling, blogging and fending for myself after eighteen months ... read more

Because of fighting in northeastern Myanmar, foreigners are currently not allowed to travel through the area due to safety fears. Therefore, I had to take the long way around to get into Thailand. I was originally going to spend a couple of days in Mawlamyine en route, but when I realised I had to go to Hpa-An to get there - which was pretty close to the border - I thought I might as well head to Thailand straight away. I'd seen and been to everything I had wanted to in Myanmar. Burmese accommodation and hospitality has been about as good as I've seen on this entire trip. As well as being friendly, staff would go out of their way to meet any request you might have. Therefore I was allowed the luxury of having a ... read more

Wherever I go in the world, it seems that long distance buses never seem to stop for food at sensible times. 11am is a really awkward time to eat because you've only just had breakfast and it's a tad too early for lunch; likewise, 4pm is a bit too late for lunch but far too early for dinner. They never stop for long enough either, meaning you have to inhale your food if you do decide to go for any of the usual, unappetising options available. Speaking of food options, arriving in the town of Nyaungshwe, the tourist enclave for nearby Inle Lake, I had now arrived in Myanmar's Shan State and the food here is supposedly a little different, with much more of a Chinese slant to it. I therefore hunted down some local food ... read more

Mandalay...the name evokes an exotic, almost mythical time and place; of a paradise far away, thanks mostly to the words of the poet Rudyard Kipling and his famous poem. Songs by Sinatra and er, Robbie Williams, add to the air of Western intrigue about the place and the famous Vegas hotel, the Mandalay Bay, ensconces the idea of Mandalay being a haven of Oriental luxury. Mandalay was also the last royal capital of Burma before the country was annexed by the British; the idea of Mandalay being the residence of 'the last emperor' also adds to its aura. In modern times, the place is merely a sprawling, mainly non-descript city and I certainly got this impression as I arrived in Mandalay. The amazing thing about my journey here from Bagan however was the fact that it ... read more

Yangon's main bus station has one of the most interesting setups that I've ever seen of a bus station. First of all, it's not really a bus 'station' but more of a bus town. A town that taxi drivers have to pay to get into and that contains streets of transport companies who transport both cargo and passengers. Between all these company shopfronts are of course, restaurants and Indian-style general stalls selling snacks. The layout is all rather confusing and traffic jams are bad inside Transport Town, which is why perhaps, we were told to leave the B&B so early to catch our bus. Our taxi driver had to make sure he dropped us off at the right 'address' - there's no way that any tourist could've found this place on their own. The air-con on ... read more

It has been a rough couple of weeks. First there was the ordeal in the Himalayas and then more cold weather, squat toilets and bucket showers in Darjeeling. It's in times like these that you...really want your Mum. Not that I'm really a mama's boy but I haven't seen her in two years and after all this travelling and everything I've been through it would be so nice to see a familiar face again...and they don't come more familiar than that of your own mother! And I will be seeing her; she is currently living in Kuala Lumpur and had a week's holiday in March, so I invited her to come and meet me in Yangon (formerly Rangoon), since it isn't that far away from her and flights were cheap. She had said recently that she ... read more

I wouldn't say that I didn't enjoy Nepal, but my luck was rotten there and the country, lets say... tested me. Though not looking as outwardly poor as India - and prices here tend to reflect that too - the infrastructure here is poorer, what with so much challenging terrain and weather to contend with. Almost everything in Nepal from houses to roads - which are the worst I have seen anywhere - seem poorly constructed. Thus I was glad to be leaving but I still had the small matter of getting back to Kathmandu first. My last night in Phaplu was f*cking freezing. I had brought enough cold weather clothing into the mountains with me but it was on the jeep ride out of there that I found myself wearing it all. The windows had ... read more

As always with me, the adventure started before the actual adventure even started; but we'll get to that shortly. Having spent a few days in Kathmandu, it was finally time for me to go and do some trekking. You kind-of have to in Nepal; going to Nepal and not trekking is like going to Egypt and not seeing the Pyramids Of Giza, going to Paris and not seeing the Eiffel Tower or going to India and not seeing the Taj Mahal. Much as I like trekking however, I wasn't about to put myself through going all the way to Everest Base Camp. I did however, want to catch a glimpse of the world's highest mountain. While on a bus in url=../../... read more
