Our heroes spend a long time on a bus in order to go walking. Lots, and lots of walking. Lukcily this walking brings them into contact with some of nature's greatest spectacles and not just tiredness! Hurrah for nature! El Calafate is quite a long way from Puerto Madryn. Actually, "quite a long way" is completely the wrong phrase here, "a soul destroying bus ride" or "one and a quarter days of my life that I'll never see again" would better describe how far apart these two places are. The first leg of our journey began at 8pm on a Tuesday in Madryn, it should have been 7pm but timetables are essentially decoration in Argentina I've come to realise. We stopped in Trelew for 90 minutes for no reason that I could descern, and then pushed ... read more

After the big city and the sierra the adventure arrives in Patagonia. Our heroes watch whales do things that would make your granny blush, confuse a helpful museum curator with poor Welsh pronunciation and eat their own weight in cake. Yum... We awoke on the bus to the scene of, well to be frank, stark, bare, wild, off-green nothingness. As far as the eye could see. In all directions. Without any respite seemingly forthcoming. Hour followed hour, mile ran in to mile along Route 3 towards Puerto Madryn, and you could be forgiven for thinking that life had turned in to a Scooby Doo chase scene, the same background flashing by at regular intervals. The earth is a slightly off mustard colour, dry and dusty and covered in grey-green shrubs which barely rise above 50cms in ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Sierra de La Ventana September 22nd 2012

We break up our journey south in a pretty isolated spot but get by through making friends with the local canine population, drinking a lot of red wine and climbing a big hill...we managed not to stalk anyone or do anything particularly tupid for a change. Sierra de la Ventana The thought of a 17 hour bus trip to Puerto Madryn was not in the slightest bit attractive to Ellie or I. We had been looking at potential options to break up the journey but with winter only having just receded the options of beaches at Bahia Blanca and other resorts did not really fit the bill and so were ruled out. The only feasible option this left us with was Tornquist Parque Nacional in the south of Buenos Aires Province. Our reason for coming here ... read more

In this episode our heroes find themselves on the set of lesser known Oscar-winning movie, "The Mission", get rather sozzelled on red wine and inadvertently stalk a Franco-Irish couple around northern Argentina. And so it was that we crossed the border into Argentina. Nothing seemed particularly different; it was still oppressively hot, I still couldn't really grasp what people were saying and the currency still looked like you shoud be playing monopoly not at being grown-ups! We jumped on the first bus we came across which was heading to Posada, this was ideal as we wanted to head to San Ignacio Mini, a village built around the remains of a Jesuit Misson. We jumped off the bus hoping it was the right place, it was, and then got lost. We got lost in what is essentially ... read more

The show must go on, despite the fact one of our heroes bites the dust for 5 days with a most unfortunate eye injury! As a result of this incapacitation, some of this blog will be skimmed over and only vague second hand accounts of events be given. However, much fun was had post injury, much fun indeed (and no references to LOST this time). In trying to escape the island (or in reality leave of our own free will via boat) a series of unfortunate events did befall me. It was another glorious day, as does befit such a place, and then I go and scratch my eye inadvertently while adjusting my cap. Cue, pain and temporary, monocular vision! One the rather choopy boat crossing back to the mainland the vision began to clear up. ... read more

The intrepid adventurers turn their backs on civilisation and head to the hills in search of the rumoured "black gold" before returning to the shore to discover what exactly island life is all about. (And did LOST really make any sense whatsoever?) After spending near enough a week in Rio we decided to head north to Ouro Preto (Portuguese for Black Gold, so named after the rock that the gold was encased in). I will admit that I´d never heard of it until reading the guidebook. The overnight bus journey was slightly grim, although Ellie didn´t seem that bothered, and I was pretty sleep deprived on arrival. It was cold too, apparently winter does that here in Brazil too, that was a surprise. So we wandered about the deserted town at 6am, which was creepy as ... read more

Rio De Janeiro Our heros try to negotiate a new country and a new language whilst battling sleep deprivation, disorientation and dodgy shower systems...will they survive? Yes, yes they will, obviously... The first port of call on this adventure is Rio De Janeiro, probably one of the more glamorous cities on the planet, with a reputation of a dangerous underbelly. We arrived at 5am after very long overnight flight from London via Rome and I was woefully short of sleep. It's hard to be impressed by much when you've been in a haze for the previous 12 hours watching a couple of terrible films (Inglorious Basterds and Safe House in case you were wondering). That said I was awake enough to know that my first impression of Rio wasn't too great. Coming through the arrival gates ... read more

Diary of a Gales Gringo At the age of 29 I have found myself on a second "gap year" only this time I have a wife who is coming along with me. Neither of us are strangers to travelling. Apart from the aforementioned trip to South Africa I've travelled solo around New Zealand and China whilst Eleanor (that's my wife for the less sharp amongst you) has bumbled around India, Tanzania, Vanuatu and Australia. We've talked about travelling together and decided to do it before life got in the way (2.4 kids, oppressive career choices, apathy and physical decline...it's a fact of ageing)! Having covered a fair chunk of Asia and Australasia between us we talked about South America as a mutually acceptable choice for a prolonged sojourn from the rat-race. It took us all of ... read more
