Dave goes round the World in 168 days

The trip of a lifetime.... round the world. I think it's something we would all like to do. I have thought about it for years but never been able to because of work and family. Well i have took the plunge and made sacrifices.... Given up my job, sold my house and worst of all i will be deserting my children for six months. So here we go, six months visiting some of the most exiting and exotic places on the planet. So who am I? My name is Dave, I am 38 years old and come from Rochdale, Lancashire in England. Is this my mid-life crisis? I dont know but I think I will enjoy it.

The Beauty of India

Published: April 23rd 2008Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Agra

Right, first things first. Since my last blog I have visited Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand again. I missed out on the Phillippines because of a late flight and subsequently missing the connection and I am now in India. So you may ask why no blogs? Well a number of reasons, the main one being I lost my lonely planet with all my notes I had made on Cambodia and Vietnam. Secondly I met some friends in Thailand and therefore considered this to be the ‘holiday’ part of my trip which didn’t include writing blogs. So I will catch up and you can all read what I got upto in Cambodia and Vietnam however I will have to do some research and re-write all my notes. In the meantime hear is the start of the India blog...... ... read more

I know it’s been a long while since I posted a blog on here and my apologies for being hopelessly behind and for the lack of photos to accompany this particular blog however all will become clear. The flight from Brisbane to Singapore was pleasant and uneventful however the arrival into Singapore could have been a different story. I arrived at about 20:30hrs and I should have learned by now to book my first nights accommodation in advance, especially when arriving late in the evening. So after a couple of phone calls thinking I was going to have another night like my first in Melbourne I managed to book in at the Summer Tavern. I bought a pass for the excellent super clean and ultra modern underground system which made the trip downtown easy and quick. ... read more

When I pencilled in the east coast of Australia on my round the world itinerary I had visions of superb beaches with great surf rolling in, the beautiful Whitsunday islands and the magnificent Great Barrier Reef. In all of these visions the sun was shining in a brilliant blue sky, maybe it was a little naive but I never thought it would rain constantly for weeks at a time. So mentally I wasn’t prepared for the deluge and never expected to be stranded by floods. More about that later. So, the overnight Greyhound bus from Sydney to Byron Bay wound its way up the coast and I actually thought we were heading for the sunshine. My theory suggests that the closer you go towards the equator the warmer it gets and the less it rains unless ... read more

A Tale of Two Cities

Published: February 4th 2008Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney

My time in New Zealand had come to an end and it was with a little sadness I boarded the flight to Melbourne via Sydney thinking that NZ has now set the benchmark for all of my future travels. I arrived in to Melbourne after a pleasant flight chatting to Naomi who lived and worked there and sang its praises telling me as many more Melbournites would that it’s a much friendlier place than Sydney and that I would enjoy it more. My Lonely Planet guide book said there was no need to book ahead and accommodation was plentiful however I expect when that was written it wasn’t Australia Day weekend and the Australian Open Tennis Championship wasn’t in town. I spent 2 long hours walking the streets looking for accommodation and when I finally found ... read more

Day 48 Friday 11th January 2008 Wellington A 06.30hrs start this morning to catch the ferry down to the South Island. The crossing of the Cook Straights was reasonably smooth and the first views of the South Island from the Queen Charlotte Sound were awesome. We docked into Picton and the weather was great and we boarded the bus down to Nelson stopping at a vineyard along the way for a bit of wine tasting. From there we drove down to the Perlorus Bridge scenic reserve where Jen and Nick jumped off the bridge in to the river which was about 15 metres below, respect guys. The hostel in Nelson was called the Prince Albert and was very nice. I arranged to hire a self-drive minibus for the following day to take us up to Able ... read more

New Year in NZ! Sweet as!

Published: January 15th 2008Oceania » New Zealand » North Island

Day 34 Friday 28th December 2007 Auckland, New Zealand It was an early start to catch the flight down from Nandi to Auckland however it was on time and only took three hours. From the airport it was a half hour ride on the bus down into central Auckland where I had already pre-booked a bed at Base (a network of hostels in NZ) First on the agenda was to sort out what I would be doing and where on New Year’s Eve so I booked onto the ‘Kiwi Experience’ up to Paihia in the Bay of Islands on the advice of Ross who I had met in Fiji. The ‘Kiwi Experience’ is a backpacker bus that covers the whole of New Zealand and guarantee’s your first night’s accommodation in any given place so to be ... read more

Christmas on Fiji Time

Published: December 28th 2007Oceania » Fiji » Mamanuca Islands

Christmas in Paradise with Friends. Writing a day by day travel blog for Fiji was a consideration however after the first few days of laying in a hammock and doing very little I have reconsidered and decided to write more of a summary of a brilliant two weeks in paradise. I arrived in to Nadi airport on the 13th December and took the advice of the travel guides and made straight for the Yasawa Flyer, a catamaran that serves the Mamanuca and Yasawa island groups. My first stop was Waya island and the Octopus resort recommended in the Lonely Planet. A good choice with a very relaxed friendly atmosphere, a good clean dormitory and first class food. The resort is located in a sheltered bay with the open air bar and dining room fronting onto the ... read more

My appologies for such a late entry however the internet is still in its infancy in Fiji so its had to wait! Day 16 10th December 2007 Lima to Los Angeles Whilst waiting in Lima airport for my flight to LA for what seemed like forever I noticed yet another delay posted on the departure boards. My flight was due to leave at 00.40hrs and the new departure time was now 3.30hrs. I did however notice another flight bound for LA at 00.30hrs so I asked to be moved and LAN Peru staff kindly agreed, result! I arrived early into LAX and called a shuttle bus to take me to the hostel at Venice Beach. I had a walk along the front and grabbed some breakfast before checking into the hostel and then hiring a bike ... read more

The Inca Trail with a Twist

Published: December 11th 2007South America » Peru

Day 9 Monday 3rd December 2007 Cusco, Peru Following on from the night out in Lima, I quickly packed and went down for breakfast which was served at 3.30am. At the hotel another two couples had arrived to join us. They were Jahn (from Norway) and Joy (originally from Thailand) who now lived in the States and Jung and Lee who were Korean. The coach picked us up at 4.00am and we headed for the airport for our 6.00am flight up to Cusco. We headed straight for the hotel and a pre-trek meeting and were introduced to our guide Cesar. Following the meeting me and my new roommate Nick crashed out for about 3 hours before having a quick look around Cusco and doing a bit of last minute shopping for the trek. We went back ... read more

Hey Gringo, Its Peru.

Published: December 4th 2007South America » Peru » Lima » Lima » Miraflores

Day 6 Friday 30th November 2007 Lima, Peru. I arrived in Lima at 08:25 following a long sleepless flight. It was a free for all outside the airport as I was mobbed by the dozens of taxi drivers. I negotiated a price of 40 Soles (£6.50) for the 45 minute journey to the hotel Girasoles which is located in the Miraflores district of Lima. The journey in the 1973 Datsun Sunny was fun to say the least, it was rush hour and there are no rules in terms of lane discipline etc.. Much of Lima is like a run down Spanish city and the place is shrouded in low cloud and fog for much of the year but apparently it does lift in January for 8 weeks or so. Karl at Travel Nation had booked an ... read more
