The brand new airbus 350 was slicing through the skies on its way to Helsinki, Finland. This was a major upgrade from the tiny plane I had used to get to my first layover in JFK. I did my best to try and sleep on this flight, because I had a ten hour layover ahead of me and I was going to try to get as much out of it as possible. The plane descended through some thick grey clouds as it approached the runway and I got to watch it happen in real time through a camera that was setup on the tail and fed through the in-flight entertainment system. This was apparently a new Finnair feature and so very cool. I disembarked and carried my one and only small backpack with me. I would ... read more

Day 1 The crack of noon. That’s when Sean and I departed for parts unknown, the longest journey we had attempted with our bicycles. I would have loved to leave earlier, but a combination of having to work the evening before, the completion of my summer semester, and putting the final touches on trip planning made waking up early kind of impractical. Plus Sean was having an issue with his front wheel and needed to have it looked at by a bike mechanic before leaving. Yeah…that was the real reason we started out so late. My dad dropped me off in Longueil, on the south shore, which was our meet up point. I set up the gear on my bike. We were both traveling extremely light. I had a tent, down sleeping bag, compact stove, basic ... read more

I awoke and met up with a Polish traveler named Karolina that I had met the previous day in the hostel. She and two other companions, Adam and Magda, were planning on renting a vehicle and setting off to explore more of the country and I was definitely in! We discovered that Riley had gotten stuck in some sand with his rental car the night before and needed assistance to get free. He only returned at four AM but he was also in for the journey. I didn't know the rest of them very well yet, but they seemed decent enough, and in any case this is one of the main reasons to travel since you never know what kind of people you'll meet. We rented another Toyota, but this time a station wagon so we ... read more

I had to get up incredibly early because I'd booked a tour to the south part of the island at a glacier called Solheimajokull, about two hours away from Reykjavik by bus. We would be doing some trekking through this ancient frozen ice and some ice climbing as well. I got picked up at my hostel and then to the main bus station. From there we set out with our guide Oscar and four others who would be making up the group. As I expected, we were greeted with beautiful scenery along the way. We stopped near the glacier to pick up some supplies and once there Oscar pulled out all the equipment we would be using and we walked towards the towering mounds of snow and ice. Being that it was already May and the ... read more

I'd been dreaming of visiting Iceland for a few years now. Not sure exactly why, but maybe it has to do with the remoteness, or the vast scenic beauty, but as the plane came in for the landing at Keflavik airport in the southwest tip of the country, I was ecstatic. I was hoping I was saving the best for last on my brief one month backpacking trip, and soon enough I would know. The plane had flown over most of the country since I was coming in from the east and I already had a chance to see some incredible views during several breaks in the clouds as the place was making its descent. I caught the shuttle towards the capital of Reykjavik, about 40 minutes away. Reykjavik is a small city by most standards, ... read more

I left Amsterdam early and had to board a train back to Eindhoven to catch my flight to Denmark. Uncle Ronny lived in Copenhagen and it had been about 17 years since I last visited him there. He was waiting for me at the arrival gate. It was good to see him. We rode the train from the airport into the heart of CPH. Ronny lived only a few blocks from the central station, in an area that had once been heavily industrialized but was now booming with cafes and bars strewn about. The apartment was on the sixth floor and I remembered his place well but not much else about the city. I met his two cats and we had a bite to eat before embarking on a leisurely ride to the neighborhood of Christiania ... read more

I grabbed a train towards Monchengladback. From there I said goodbye to Germany and took another train to Venlo as I entered the Netherlands again. I continued on to Eindhoven and then yet another train all the way to Amsterdam. I had a one night stay slightly outside the city at another hostel. I was so stoked to have arrived and wanted to explore this city as soon as possible. The central station was beautiful as it was massive, and was directly in front of De Wallen, the oldest neighborhood in the entire city and contained most of the famed Red Light district. I strolled through the streets with a smile plastered on my face. I'd never quite experienced a vibe such as this. Restaurants and coffee shops were strewn throughout the narrow and windy roads, ... read more

I went downstairs to get some hostel breakfast, and ran into Mike again. We decided to try and find some bikes to rent. Our efforts however proved futile as the method to rent them required a phone call, in German, to the bike company whereby they would give us a pin number. In any case we couldn't be bothered, so we decided to just walk. Mike had already been here for several days so he showed me around, beginning with the nearby red light district, then the financial district, then we walked along the Rhine and crossed over towards some residential neighborhoods on the south side. We got an amazing view of the skyline. For blocks and blocks we conversed, sharing travel stories amongst other things. Being that it was Easter Friday, the city seemed quite ... read more

A long day of travel lay ahead. I bid farewell to Brussels as I walked the final steps to the train station. I made sure to grab some chocolate at the nearby supermarket. For three hours I viewed wonderful Belgian scenery as the train rode eastward. Eventually this scenery turned into Luxembourg. I can't say I knew very much about this incredibly small and landlocked country of less than five hundred thousand but my plan was to stop in for a few short hours, as an extended stay would be out of my budget. My train arrived into the central station and I decided to immediately buy an exit ticket, surprised at how much it would cost to get out. With all my gear in tow, I walked out of the station and into the beautiful ... read more

Europe » Belgium » Brussels-Capital Region April 16th 2014

My first day of Brussels consisted of another free walking tour, through the city center. This time there were several groups and I joined one of them, met a few people from North America as well as a British guy on his way home from Asia. Brussels had an incredible city center consisting of old style palaces and churches within a giant square. The city was constantly fought over by surrounding nations and often was used as a buffer. Halfway through the tour we stopped at a bar called Scotty's, and I tried some blanche beer while sitting next to my new friends. As the tour resumed I followed Matt and Andy, while talking to another girl. After a while, the guys ahead realized they'd been following the wrong group of people. Turned out this was ... read more
